Dribbling Drills

This document outlines four basketball dribbling drills: Knock Out, F-A-S-T, Cone Touch, and Dribbling Relays. Knock Out has students dribble in an area and try to knock others' balls out. F-A-S-T has one student retrieve a ball while others dribble away, then try to tag someone. Cone Touch has students dribble and touch cones within a time limit. Dribbling Relays is a relay race where teams pass a ball down a line by dribbling. All drills emphasize dribbling fundamentals like finger tips, low stance, and head up. Progressions include changing areas, goals

Dribbling Drills

Knock Out
- A square area is created with cones as the corners. Size can be chosen as desired
- Students all have a basketball and are positioned in the designated
area
- All students dribble the ball within the area, aiming to maintain
possession of the ball whilst moving around within the area
- At the same time, students attempt to knock other students’ balls
out of the area
- If their ball is knock out of the area, students are to wait on the
outside of the area
- Students continue until one student remains in the area with
possession of their ball
- Continue for several rounds or until desired
Progression
- Change playing area
- Use non-dominant hand
- Increase speed
KTPS
- Use your fingertips to bounce the ball
- Stay low
- Head up
- Use body to shield/protect the ball

F-A-S-T
- Students each have a basketball and are positioned in a circle in the centre of the
basketball court
- The teacher (or a chosen student) stands in the centre of the circle
with a soft ball
- The teacher calls a chosen students’ name and throws the soft ball
in the court
- The player chosen is to leave their basketball and run towards the
ball
- All other players dribble their ball as fast as they can away from
the person in the middle
- The player who retrieves the soft ball calls ‘stop’ as soon as they
get the ball
- Students then must stop dribbling and stay where they are
- The player with the soft ball then has 2 steps to try and throw the
ball to tag another student
- If the ball hits the other student, they are to become the centre of
the circle player (replaces the teacher), and the thrower takes their ball
- If the ball misses or is court, the throwing player becomes the centre circle player
Progression
- Reduce number of steps before throwing the ball
- Change the playing area
- Add time limit
KTPS
- Use your fingertips to bounce the ball
- Stay low
- Head up
- Fast movement

Cone Touch
- Cones are scattered randomly within the basketball court.
Number of cones can vary
- Students begin on the baseline each with a basketball
- On the teacher’s call, all students are to dribble their basketballs
to the cones, touching the cone whilst still bouncing (e.g. bouncing
with their left hand while they touch the cone)
- The aim is touch as many cones in the given time
- Students must touch at least 5 cones before they go back to a
cone they have already touched.
- The goal of the game can be varied: most touches in 1 minute, top
three players for most touches, have students in teams and the
team with the most touches, have to touch all 20 etc.
Progression
- Change playing area
- Modify goal of the game
- Make students bounce with their non-dominant hand
KTPS
- Use your fingertips to bounce the ball
- Stay low and head up
- Fast movement

Dribbling Relays
- Students are organised into two teams, with one basketball per team
- Teams are to line up in relay formation
- On the teachers call, students with the ball dribble to their teammate in the opposite line
- Students continue through until all players have had a turn
- The team to finish first becomes the winning team
- Note: the task can be manipulated, e.g. dribbling with non-
dominant hand, hopping whilst dribbling, switching hands etc.
Progression
- Change playing area
- Manipulate rules/locomotion used
- Rotate teams
KTPS
- Use your fingertips to bounce the ball
- Stay low and head up
- Fast movement and efficient movement
