Rev F4 Quadratic Function
A. Shape a>0, U
a<0, I
B. Quadratic function in the form ( completing the sqauare): a(x+p) 2+q
i)a>0, minimum point (-p,q) a<0, maximum point (-p,q)
ii)axis of symmetry is x=-p
C. Quadratic inequality: Graphical method
i)(x+2)(x-8)>0
Cuts the x-axis at x=-2 and x=8 ,
graph >0 (above x-axis)
x<-2, x>8
ii) (x+2)(x-8) 0
cuts the x-axis at x=-2 and x=8
graph 0 (below x-axis including points on the axis)
-1/2 x 4
1. Diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function y=f(x). The straight line
y= 4 is a tangent to the curve y=f(x).
(a) Write the equation of the axis of symmetry of the curve
(b) Express f(x) in the form ( x b) 2 c ,where b and c are constants.
Solutions:
(a) x=3 note: x=(1+5)/2 mid point
(b) from graph, min point is (3,-4) so f(x) is (x-3) 2-4
2. (a) Express 2x2-2x+5 in the form a ( x p )2 q , (b) find axis of symmetry and coordinates of
minimum point.
Solution:
Method 1: use a=2, expand 2( x p ) 2 q and compare with 2x2-2x+5
Method 2:

4. Show that quadratic function 3x-2-2x 2 is negative for all values of x.
Note: show this quadratic graph of I shape never cuts the x-axis, that is no real roots.
Solution:
a=-2 b=3 c=-2
b2-4ac=(3)2-4(-2)(-2)=9-16=-5
since b2-4ac<0,
3x-2-2x2 is negative for all values of x.
5. Given y-x+8=0 and xy>16, find the range of values of x.
Solution: note :Eliminate y by substitution method
From y-x+6=0 , y=x-6
xy>16
x(x-6)>16
x2-6x-16>0
solve quadratic inequality by graphical method
(x-8)(x+2)>0
Choose above x-axis,
X<2 , x>8
