ith this edition, GIA offers yet another complete set of responsorial psalms for Sundays, solemnities
and feasts of the Lord throughout the three-year lectionary cycle. These settings, by Canadian com-
poser Michel Guimont, are unique in a number of ways. They can be performed using organ, piano,
or guitar; the harmonic structure is rich and fresh (the psalm tones have a distinctly contemporary quality); and
both responses and psalm tones are especially melodic.
The very nature of psalm tones-one melody, many texts-demands careful attention to performance prac-
tice. Psalm tones, like the classical recitative, constitute a musical form that, more than any other, yields to the
demands of text. Because the greatest part of the text is chanted on a single reciting tone, the singer is free to-
and in fact obliged to----employ all the natural stresses of the text. As with all psalm tones, however, care must be
taken to avoid the application of unnatural stresses at the cadences, i.e., not allowing the melodic contour to mis-
apply stresses or accents to syllables that would otherwise not be stressed. For clear communication of the text
from singer to hearer, natural speech patterns must consistently be applied to verses chanted on a psalm tone for-
mu1a.
A smooth performance may be more easily achieved if the cantor begins each verse after the accompanist has
sounded the first chord. Presuming that the verse is chanted more or less on repeated eighth notes, the cantor would
observe a quarter rest over the sounded chord before beginning the verse.
Each psalm in this collection is identified by its title, liturgical cycle designation, and lectionary
number. Page numbers have also been provided as a further convenience.
The publisher is grateful to Bobby Fisher for preparation of the guitar chord glossary found at the end of this
edition.

      1. When the Lono brought back the cap - tives of Zion, we were like men dreaming.

      4. Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown,

Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with re - Jolcrng.

     2. The Lono confronts evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the ear1h.

When the just cry out, the Lono hears them, and from all their dis - tress he rescues them.

I will bless the Lono at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
