EI 6602 – PROCESS CONTROL

( Common to Instrumentation and Control Engineering)

(Regulations 2013 )

Time : Three Hours Maximum : 100 marks

Answer ALL Questions

PART A – (10 x 2 = 20 marks )

1.Define degree vof freedom .

2. Give example for servo operations .

3. Write the merit and limitation of ON / OFF controller .

4.State the reset wind up problem .

5. Mention any two examples for electric actuators.

6. Define flashing phenomena.

7. What do you mean by controller tuning ?

8. Sketch any one Auto tuning scheme diagram .

9. What is inferential control ?

10. What is the need for adaptive scheme ?

PART – B (5x13=65 marks)

11. (a) Obtain the mathematical mode of a thermal process of your choice .

Or

(b) Illustrate lumped and distribute parameter model with an example for each of your choice .

12. (a) Explain the need merits and disadvantages of P , I and D modes of OID controller .

Or
(b) Discuss any two features present in practical forms of PID controller.

13. (a) Explain the standard characteristics of control valve and example for shape of the valve plugs

Offering these characteristics.

Or

(b) Explain the procedure and set of formulas used for control valve sizing for liquid streem.

14.(a) Explain the reaction curve method of controlled tuning with ZN tuning criteria .

Or

(b) Explain the procedure for continuous cycling method of controller tuning using appropriate

tuning criteria .

15.(a) Explain with block diagram the superior performance of cascade control scheme over single

Feed back controller.

Or

(b) Describe model predictive control scheme with block diagram and timing diagram.

PART –C ( 1x 15= 15 marks )

16. (a) (i) Obtain the mathematical model for two tank system under interacting and

non interacting conditions .

(ii) State any one closed loop tuning criteria .

Or

(b) (i) Design an electronics PID controller with PD = 50% , TI = 1min and TD = 30 SECS .

(ii) Identify any two advanced control control schemes used for distillation column.
