Road Lighting Calculation - Sample

This document provides the input data and calculations for determining the spacing of roadway lighting fixtures to achieve a required illuminance level of 25 Lux. It lists inputs like the fixture lumens, utilization coefficients, and pole height. The calculation formula divides the product of the lumens, coefficients and width by the required illuminance and road width. For a single 250W high pressure sodium fixture at 8 meters height, the calculated spacing is 30 meters to achieve the 25 Lux requirement.

ROADWAY ILLUMINANCE CALCULATION

1. INPUT DATA FOR CALCULATION

1) Required illuminance E' = 25 [Lux]
2) Quantity of Fixture No = 1
(One Side or Stagered Installation : 1 / Facing Together Installation : 2 )
3) Type of Lighting Fixture Type = H.P SODIUM 250W
4) Voltage 230V
5) Initial Lumens per Sets F = 26,000 [Lm]
6) Total Coefficient of Utilization ( CU ) CU = 0.43
7) Illumination Factor ( U ) U= 0.77
8) Maintenance Factor( M ) M= 0.7
- LLF is simply the product of multiplying all the contributing factors. Where factors are not known,
or applicate, they are assumed to be unity.
9) Pole Height 8.0
10) Road Width ( Back / Hous / Road Side Distance) 8.00 ( 0.50 / 1.00 / 7.00 )[m]

2. CALCULATION FORMULA

1) Spacing ( Initial Lumens per Lamp )´(No ' s of Lamp per Lumiaire )´(CU )´(U )´( M )
=
2) Typical Roadway Side Elevation View
(E' )´( Road Width )

Height of Lighting Fixture

Back Side Road Width

Distance Street Side Laterial Distance
Hous Side Laterial Distance Example of coefficient of utilization curves
for luminaire providing Type XXX light distribution.

3) Spacing Methods
< One Side > < Staggered > < Facing Together >
3. SOLUTION
1) Lateral Distance Ratio
= Street or House Side Distance / Mounting Height

Ss Ratio = 7 / 8 = 0.88 [m]

Ss CU = 0.36 < By Typ. Roadway Coefficient of Utilization Curve>

Hs Ratio = 1 / 8 = 0.12 [m]

Hs CU = 0.07 < By Typ. Roadway Coefficient of Utilization Curve>

∴ Total CU = 0.36 + 0.07 = 0.43

2) Going To The Spacing Formula

( 1 Dekalux is equal to 1.076 footcandles. 1 Dekalux = 10Lux )
Spacing = ( 26000[Lm] x 1[Ea] x 0.43 x 0.7 x 0.77 ) / ( 25[Lux] x 8[m] )
= 30.0 [m]

4. RESULT

∴ Road lighting fixture(s) is installed at about 30 meter distance.
