Tier 2 Words
Based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears Illustrated by Mike and Carl Gordon and Retold by Susanna

Suggested Tips for learning the tier 2 words:
After the initial reading of the story, highlight the tier 2 words in the story and then
imitate the actions (e.g. plodding) and/or discuss the words.
Find ways to utilize the words during your daily activities (“Let’s enjoy a delicious
snack today”).
We will use these tier 2 words in some of the activities contained in this packet.

Instructions
1. Print out pages 5-7. Cut out the characters, words and objects
and lay out on a table, or attach velcro and use on a flannel
board.
2. Open the book “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to selected
pages.
3. Then ask the students to gather the correct character and
object to create a sentence describing the event pictured in
the story. (e.g. “Baby Bear cried when he saw his broken
chair.” “Goldilocks snuggled in Baby Bear’s bed.”) You will help
with selecting the written verb to add to the sentence.

Print and laminate pages 9-10. Cut out the items on page 10. Lay page 9 on the table along with the
items from page 10.
Throughout this activity you will highlight the pattern for correct use of personal and possessive
pronouns by contrasting the correct use of both pronoun types.
To start the activity ask “What does Mother Bear/Father Bear want?” “He/She wants his/her ______.”
“Find his/her ____.” Once the child picks up the item and places it on the page, ask them to respond
“He/She wants his/her ____. Now he/she has his/ her ____. Take turns turning over the objects and
placing them on page 9 in the space provided.
Expand the activity by adding objects from other stories to provide a fun
discrimination task (“That is not her spider. She does not want a spider!)
