Reciprocating Compressor Study

The document reports on a lab experiment conducted at the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar to study the efficiency of a two-stage reciprocating air compressor. The objectives were to demonstrate reciprocating compression and determine the mechanical efficiency of the first and second stages. The theoretical background explains how to calculate the electrical power input, mechanical output power, compressor power input and output, mean effective pressure, and efficiency. Formulas are provided to determine the heat lost by air in the intercooler and aftercooler.

Lab Report # 8:
Experimental study of reciprocating air
compressor.

Objectives:
i. Demonstration of reciprocating compression.
ii. To find mechanical efficiency of 1st and 2nd stage reciprocating compressor.

Theoretical Background:
i. Electrical Power = VI

ii. Mechanical output of motor, wn = FN/K

Where, F = Brake load

N = Rev / min

K is brake constant

iii. Power input to compressor, w12 = nbelt * wn

= 0.98 wn

iv. Power output of compressor = Pn Vn N1 /3

Where, Pn is mean effective pressure found from indicated diagram.

How to find Pn :

Divide the the indicated diagram into 10 line and fnd the length of each line , add them
all and divide the answer by 10

P = (l1 + l2 + l3 …… l10) / 10 * Spring strength

Efficiency = power output / power input

= W 12 / ( Pn Vn N / 3)

Heat lost by air in intercooler = m Cp ( T9 – T10)

Heat lost by after cooler = m Cp ( T8 – T10)

Cp = 41868 KJ/kgK
