AAC Block Density and Strength Testing

1. The document describes procedures to determine the bulk density and compressive strength of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks. 2. To measure bulk density, specimens are dried and weighed to calculate density as the ratio of weight to volume. Compressive strength is measured by placing cube specimens in a compression machine and applying load until failure within 30 seconds. 3. Test results for bulk density and compressive strength are presented in tables for different manufacturers, with Brixo blocks found to have the highest compressive strength.

DTERMINATION OF UNIT WEIGHT OR BULK DENSITY OF AAC

BLOCKS:

AIM:

 To determine bulk density of AAC blocks.

BACKGROUND:

 Bulk density of AAC blocks determined as the ratio between the weight of the
specimen after drying at 105ºC and volume of the specimen.
 Moisture content of AAC products.

APPARTUS:

 Weight machine
 Ventilated oven

REFERENCE:

 IS : 6441 (part 1) – 1972, determination of unit weight or bulk density and moisture
content.

PROCEDURE:

BULK DENSITY:

MEASUREMENT OF SPECIMEN:
Length, width and thickness shall be measured before drying at 105ºC with an
accuracy of 0.1 mm using suitable caliper.
 DRYING OF SPECIMEN:
 After measuring, the specimen shall be placed in a drying oven at 105 ± 5ºC until all
the moisture has been removed and constant weight is obtained.
 Immediately after removing from the drying oven, the specimen shall be weighed.
 The weight W of the specimen shall be considered constant if the weight after four hours
further drying has not changed more than 0.2 percent.

CONCLUSION:
DETERMINATION OF COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF AAC
BLOCKS:

AIM:

 To determine the compressive strength of AAC blocks.

BACKGROUND:

 Compressive strength is very important property of paver blocks as different types of

paver blocks are used for different work.
 It is essential to determine its compressive strength for given stock of paver blocks..

APPARTUS:

 Weight machine
 Ventilated oven

REFERENCE:

 IS : 6441 (part 5) – 1972, determination of compressive strength.

PROCEDURE:

SIZE OF SPECIMEN:

 Compressive strength shall be determined in cubes with an edge length 15 cm.

 When the specimen are taken samples from the smaller thickness, cubes may be built
up, without gluing, of two or three plane, ground square slices of thickness 7.5 cm and
5 cm respectively.

TESTING UNDER COMPRESSION LOAD:

 Dimensions of the pressure surface shall be measured with an accuracy of ±0.1 mm.
 The cubes shall be placed in the compression machine and load applied perpendicular
to the direction of the slices from which the cubes thickness has been built up.
 For cubes which have been prepared in one piece, the direction of load shall be
perpendicular to the direction of rice of the mass during production.
 The specimen shall be loaded at rate of 0.5 to 2 kg/cm2 in such a way that failure
occurs within 30 seconds.

CONCLUSION:

Compressive strength is important test for aac blocks to know the compressive strength.

As results shown aac blocks of brixo has good compressive strength and Aerocon hill blocks has less
compressive strength compare to other companies.
