Abstract
Current practice to design a seismic resistant structure involves the concept of weakening a
structure and adding external damping. Though this approach ensures life safety in the event
of the design earthquake event, and the collapse prevention in the event of maximum
earthquake event, it is inefficient to reduce the permanent deformation of a structural system.
In other words, this approach cannot prevent loss of functionality of a structure. This
approach can be modified and improved by introducing apparent weakening into a structural
system. This can be achieved through an adaptive negative stiffness system (ANSS), a
combination of negative stiffness device and a damper. In this study, the effectiveness of
ANSS has been enlightened by conducting the parametric study on the 2D & 3D- finite
element model of the G+5 building frame with ANSS. Also, the modelling techniques used to
model the ANSS in commercial software package have been described.
