Study of Mass Dampers in Earthquake-Resistant
Structure

Abstract:

The increasing frequency and intensity of seismic events pose significant risks to built
environments, making it essential to develop advanced earthquake-resistant designs. This
project investigates the role of seismic dampers in enhancing structural safety and
resilience by reducing seismic forces and dissipating energy during earthquakes. The study
focuses on analyzing different types of dampers, including viscous, friction, tuned mass,
and yielding dampers, evaluating their performance through computational modeling and
real-world case studies.
Finite element analysis and dynamic response simulations are used to assess how each
damper type influences parameters such as structural displacement, drift, and
acceleration. The effectiveness of individual dampers is compared, and hybrid damping
systems are also explored to determine the optimal combination of dampers for various
structural configurations. Additionally, the project examines the cost-effectiveness of
implementing these dampers in retrofitting existing buildings versus new construction.
The findings aim to establish a framework for integrating seismic dampers into standard
design practices, highlighting best practices for installation and maintenance to ensure
long-term performance. This research contributes to the development of innovative
engineering solutions that minimize structural damage and improve the safety and
resilience of communities in earthquake-prone regions.

2. LITERATURE REVIEW
Deepesh Panchal, Haresh Prajapati and Viral Panchal (IJES)
Abstract: For over 35 years now, field of earthquake engineering has existed in our country.
There have been significant contributions to seismic safety of several important structures in
our country by Indian engineers. It is also seen that due to lack of awareness amongst
practicing engineers about provisions that needs to be followed in designing earthquake
resistant buildings, the result has been less satisfactory for normal structures during past
Earthquake in India. To prevent the buildings from earthquake excitations there are several
techniques that are used nowadays such as base isolation, dampers, bracings, etc. This paper
is a review on various researches carried out by various researchers and engineers on such
systems. The paper consists of a short review on the tests and investigations on systems for
earthquake resistance in buildings done by professors, students, etc of various universities
from all over the globe and also focuses on the result they obtained

Conclusion: A. Simple base isolation system in low rise structure performs better and gives
better outcome which means there is no need to modify the characteristics of superstructure
as modification might not have a positive impact on performance of isolators. B. By
increasing damping of superstructure and allocating additional base mass, better isolation can
be achieved in middle rise buildings. C. By increasing the damping and making the
superstructure stiff, we can reach effective base isolation in high rise buildings mix

ABSTRACT: The review paper is for Analysis of earthquake effect on different buildings in
seismic zones. Due to the effect of earthquake many building structure are partially or
completely damaged so for Civil Engineers working in seismic zones it is need to determine
seismic load of that particular building. There are number of software are used such as
STAAD.pro. AutoCAD, E-TABS for design and planning of building. The aim of this project
work is to study the past seismic analysis of buildings with carried out irregularity at different
floor level.

CONCLUSION: i. To determine the different types of studies that have gave seismic
analysis of the RCC building structure with different irregularities like vertical geometry with
and stiffness. ii. The STAAD pro. Software can be used efficiently for applying the seismic
loads based on the earthquake zones. iii. The main role to play the sufferings occur by
earthquake are need to minimize for RCC building structure. iv. It can be minimized by
taking and providing base isolation, wall, shear and load, slabs, footing etc. v. The software
used to design of structure STAAD pro, AutoCAD and E-Tabs etc

3. Title review on earthquake resisting structures BY: Dr. G. B. Ramesh kuamr B.E.,

Abstract: Earthquakes are a noteworthy danger to human lives and to the respectability of
the structures and structures in seismic locale. Structures are the most noticeably awful hit
with the extraordinary harms because of ground movements coming about because of
tremors. Late explores have prompted new procedures to lessen the harms brought about by
quakes on structures and these strategies are connected for creative basic plan. The systems
like base seclusion and seismic dampers are utilized to configuration structures against tremor
harms by changing the dynamic qualities of the structure. In this paper, the conduct of the
structures by executing base separation and seismic dampers is clarified

Conclusion: The joining of damping components and base confinement by improving

execution lessens the impact of the seismic tremor on structures. The expense to-cost
execution proportion is more in structures that give dampers. The method of Damper
successfully lessens solid pressure and support. In every one of the 6 degrees of opportunity
that the uninvolved framework cannot have, dampers can have confinement. While the base
disengagement diminishes disappointment.

4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
1.Setup Configuration:
- The mass damper was constructed using a wooden stick as a beam and a weight attached
to it.
- The system was subjected to various disturbances, such as vibrations generated from a
shaking table.

2. Performance Measurements:
- Damping Ratio: The introduction of the mass dampened the oscillations significantly
compared to the undamped case.
- Frequency Response: The system's natural frequency shifted due to the added mass,
impacting the overall damping effectiveness.
- Energy Dissipation: The wooden stick effectively dissipated energy, reducing amplitude
over time.

3. Data Analysis:
- Measurements were taken at different weights and positions of the mass.
- The damping effect was quantified by measuring the amplitude of oscillations over time.

Discussion

1. Effectiveness of Damping:
- The mass damper proved effective in reducing oscillation amplitude. The heavier the
mass, the more significant the reduction in oscillations, supporting the principle of dynamic
damping.

2. Material Properties:
- The wooden stick's rigidity and flexibility played a crucial role in the system's overall
performance. A stiffer material could enhance the damping effect, while too much flexibility
could lead to ineffective damping.

3. Optimization:
- Adjusting the position of the mass influenced the damping ratio. Placing the mass at
specific points along the stick optimized energy dissipation.
- Future experiments could explore different materials and shapes to further enhance the
damper's efficiency.

4. Applications:
- The findings suggest that simple mass dampers can be effective in mitigating vibrations in
structures. This approach could be applied to buildings, bridges, and other structures prone to
oscillations.

5. Limitations:
- The system's performance was limited by the range of weights used and the precision of
measurements. External factors, such as air resistance and friction, may also have influenced
results.

Page 9
- Investigating other configurations and materials, as well as performing more extensive
testing under varied conditions, could provide deeper insights into optimizing mass dampers

CONCLUSION
Seismic dampers play a vital role in earthquake-resistant design by absorbing and dissipating
seismic energy, reducing structural vibrations, and minimizing damage.

-Different types of dampers, such as fluid viscous, friction, and tuned mass dampers, offer
versatile solutions for enhancing the resilience of both new and retrofitted buildings.

Despite the initial costs, the long-term benefits of using seismic dampers include increased
safety, reduced repair costs, and improved structural lifespan, making them essential in
earthquake mitigation strategies

In conclusion, the mass damper project utilizing wooden sticks demonstrates a practical
application of mechanical principles to mitigate vibrations and enhance stability.

The design effectively showcased how mass distribution and damping mechanisms can
significantly reduce oscillations in structures.

Our findings indicate that while wooden materials may limit certain performance metrics
compared to heavier or more rigid alternatives, they provide a cost-effective and
environmentally friendly solution.

Future iterations could explore the integration of advanced materials or adjustable mass
configurations to optimize performance further. Overall, this project underscores the
importance of innovative design in engineering and the potential of simple materials to solve
complex problems.
