Applegate's Rules For Applying The Kennedy Classification

The document outlines 8 rules for applying the Kennedy classification system for partial edentulism. The rules specify that classification should follow tooth extraction, a missing 3rd molar is excluded unless used as an abutment, a missing 2nd molar is excluded, the most posterior missing teeth determine the classification, other missing teeth are modification spaces, and modifications are counted but not considered in class IV.

Applegate's Rules for Applying the Kennedy Classification

Rule 1: Rule 2:
Rule 3: Rule 4:
Rule 5: Rule 6:
Rule 7: Rule 8:
Classification should follow rather than precede extraction.
If the 3rd molar is missing and not to be replaced, it is not
considered in the classification.
If the 3rd molar is present and to be used as an abutment, it is
considered in the classification.
If the second molar is missing and not be replaced, it is not
considered in the classification.
The most posterior edentulous area determines the classification.
Edentulous areas other than those determining classification are
called modification spaces.
The extent of the modification is not considered, only the number.
There is no modification space in Class IV.
