SUMMARY 0904w/4 Aaan hana VCS-40 Fokker 50: 23-12 Daas 1 23-42 VEKY HIGH FREQUENCY COMMUNICATION (VHF -COMM ) TRAINING MANUAL Maintenance Training 1. INTRODUCTION. The VCS-40 is a short range communication system. The line of sight limits the reception range. You use the system for voice communication between the aircraft and ground stations. The system operates in the frequency band from 118.000 to 135.975 MHz. The frequency selection is in 25 KHz steps. The type of modulation is amplitude modulation (AM) 2. DESCRIPTION. There are two independent systems in the aircraft. Each system has the following components - a control panel (CP) - a transceiver - an antenna On the CP you make mode and frequency selections and the CP-display shows the frequency. The received audio goes directly to the audio integrating system. The audio integrating system gives push to talk (PTT) and microphone signals directly to the transceiver. Each transceiver has its own antenna. The system 1 antenna is on top of the aircraft, the system 2 antenna is on the aircraft bottom. For system no.1 the 28 VDC comes from an emergency bus. The power for the CP comes from the power supply of the transceiver. Frequency Tuning and Display The top part of the CP is the display. On the bottom part are the selector knob, the frequency selectors and a transfer push-button. The left hand knob on the CP is the selector knob. It has 3 positions: ~ OFF - system off. - ON - The CP gives a power supply enable signal (PS enable) to the transceiver. The power supply in the transceiver switches on and the CP gets 10 VDC back for its own power supply. ~ TEST - the CP gives a squelch disable signal to the transceiver (receiver test). The 2 combined knobs on the right hand side of the CP are the frequency selectors. With the large one you make the MHz step selections from 118.---~ to 135.--- MHz. With the small one you make the fractional selections from ---.000 to ---.975 in 25 KHz steps. The tuning is a gray-code tuning system. The description of such a system you can find in the introduction basics. The display shows in the upper part: - the active frequency - an active indication. (act) ~ an indication to which system the CP belongs (1 or 2 indication) and in the lower part: - the standby frequency. In a normal situation you change this frequency with the frequency selector knobs. - a transmit annunciation (TX), when you are transmitting. "FAIL 1" or "FAIL 2" in case of a failure. The transfer button has the following functions: - Momentary pushing the button, changes the standby frequency in the active frequency and the active frequency in the standby. - Push and hold the button for 2-3 seconds, the standby frequency indication goes off. Now yow can change directly the active frequency with the frequency selector knobs.Push and hold again for 2-3 seconds gives you the standby frequency back. - Push and hold for 7 seconds, the active frequency goes to 121.5 MHz (the emergency frequency). The standby frequency goes off. You can also use this feature in case of a display failure. You still can change the frequency with the selector knobs: every "click" of the outer knob changes the 121.5 MHz with 1 MHz. Every "click" of the inner knob changes the frequency with 25 KHz (clockwise: increase, counter-clockwise: decrease). Push and hold again for 2 - 3 seconds gives you the standby frequency back. SUMMARY 2032A/1 628T-24 Fokker 50; 23-11 TRAINING MANUAL 23-11 HF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM Malntenance Training 1. INTRODUCTION The HF communication system (HF COMM) is for communication between the aircraft and ground stations. The jonosphere reflects the frequencies in the HF band, so the line of sight does not limit the reception range of the system. That is why the HF COMM is suitable for long range, world wide communication. The frequency range of the system is 2 to 29.999 MHz. You can make the frequency selection in 1 KHz steps, 50 there are 28000 channels available. There are two modes of operation. These modes are: - AM - Amplitude Modulation _ SSB - Singele Side Band In the AM mode the system transmits a carrier with amplitude modulation. In the SSB mode you remove the carrier and a side band. The system only transmits the SSB. To get optimal power transfer from transmitter to antenna, the antenna impedance must pe the same as the transmitter output impedance (50 Ohm) - For each frequency the impedance of an antenna is different. Since the antenna on the aircraft has a fixed lenght, it is only suitable for one frequency. The antenna coupler tunes filters to adapt the antennae impedance for each different frequency to the transmitter output impedance. The to minimum standing wave ratio (SWR}, which is 4 relation coupler tunes This is to prevent that too much between forward and reflected power. reflected power damages the transmitter. The control panel also shows the frequency selection. The received audio signals go from the transceiver directly to the audio integrating system. The push to transmit (PTT) and microphone signals go directly from the audio intergrating system to the transceiver. The antenna coupler adjusts the antenna impedance to get the correct load for the transmitter. The coupler location is inside the dorsal fin and the antenna is an integral part of the dorsal fin. The pressurization should be 5 to 7 psi and you must use dry air or nitrogen for pressurization. You regulary have to look for correct operation of the extra blower in the avionics rack. When the blower is defective, there is no fault annunciation, but it may result in an overheated transmitter. Test On the front panel of the transceiver is a test switch. With this switch you switch on the LED’s on the transceiver front and you disable the RF SENS setting. The RF SENS goes to maximum sensitivity and when you hear the receiver noise, the receiver operates correctly. To find out if the transmitter operates properly, you must do a transmission. When you hear sidetone during the transmission, the transmitter has sufficient output power. NOTE: Do not use the following frequencies for a test: ~2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 MHz, which are international calibration frequencies. - 2.182 and 8.364 MHz, which are emergency frequencies. Fault Monitoring On the panel of the transceiver are 3 lights(in fact LED’s), which show which part of the system is faulty. LRU FAIL shows a faulty transceiver. It monitors the following: - power supply ~ frequency control - synthesizer out of lock - transmitter low power (< 30W) KEY-INTERLOCK shows a faulty coupler. See description. CONTROL INPUT FAIL shows a faulty control panel. It monitors: ~- ARINC 559 bus activity ~ Validity of ARINC 559 word. 3.3 Antenna Coupler for The transceiver operates in a wide frequency band (2 to 29.999 MHz) or ina narrow frequency band (2.8 to 23.999 MHz). The band selection depends on aircraft wiring. When a transceiver operates in the narrow band with a control panel for the wide band, a frequency selection outside the narrow band gives a 1000 Hz tune-tone warning. This is to warn you for the out-of-band selection. Fokker 50: 23-11 628T-2A 2032A/1 TRAINING MANUAL Maintenance Training 23-11 HF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 5. DESCRIPTION The system has the following component = two audio selector panels (ASP) and jackboxes (JB) = two ground service jackboxes. One near the external power receptacle and one in the air conditioning compartment - a general switch panel = two cabin attendant (G/A or ATTD) handsets with cradles = two interphone amplifiers in the audio accessory unit. There are two interphone systems, the flight interphone and the cabin interphone system. The flight interphone is for communication between the flight compartment crew, which are the captain, first officer and the observer. When the aircraft is on the ground, a contact of a ground/flight relay connects the ground service jackboxes to this system. The cabin interphone system is for communication between the cabin crew, which are the cabin attendants. It is possible to connect the two interphone systems together for communication between flight compartment crew and cabin crew The crewmembers can call each other with call switches on the general switch panel and the attendant cradles P50 AF-E/EL 002 UNE, 1991 Technical Training MTech aaj Sosa Tchobay s = a ATTENDANT CALL eye ANPUFIER switc | uns PEAKE 2-30 PART —-} anew CRADLE + SELECTIONS") CRADLE 2 es FIC TECHIE cocxerr cower s s ae rai |e re ase 1 Pete) nau eg] ASP 2 Rco _ EXTERNAL sackpox [TED HC Tae | sacknox P50 AP-E/ET. OPERATION for the systems is 28 V DC. For. the flight interphone system it comes Power ‘The systems are on as soon as power is available from an emergency bus 3.1 Flight Interphone are IC/RT switches on the ASP and the aileron control wheel. When you place one of these switches in the IC position you apply the microphone signals to the flight interphone system. You get the flight interphone audio signal in your headset when you adjust the volume of the interphone with the INT selection on the audio selector panel. The microphone signal goes to an interphone amplifier in the audio accessory unit (AAU). The output signal of the interphone amplifier goes back to the ASP. You hear the signal on the headset and the flight compartment speaker. There A ground/flight relay connects the service jackboxes to the interphone amplifier when the aircraft is on the ground. During flight there is no connection between the jackboxes and the interphone system. This prevents nuisance noises in the syste during flight. It is possible to connect the flight interphone to the cabin interphone. To do so you must select: = CAB, on the ASP - ATTD CALL, on the general switch panel. This causes a hi/lo chime, the ATTD CALL light (on the general switch panel) and the PILOT lights (on both cradles) come on. A relay in the AAU connects the cabin interphone output of the ASP to the cabin interphone amplifier. With the reset (RST) button on the general switch panel you cancel the ATTD CALL selection. The ATTD CALL light and PILOT lights go off. The reset interrupts the flight - cabin interphone amplifier connection. P50 AF-E/#t, JUNE: 1991 006 M$Tech Technical Training 2 Cabin Interphone With the cabin interphone system it is possible to speak from handset to handset. To get the attention of the other cabin attendant you make the C/A call) selection on the cradle. A hi/lo chime sounds and the C/A lights on both cradles come on. ‘The microphone signals from the handsets go to the cabin interphone amplifier. The output signals of the amplifier go back to each handset. When you return the handset on the cradle, a hook-switch resets the C/A selection and the lights go off . It is also possible to connect the cabin interphone to the flight interphone. To do so you make the PILOT selection on the cradle.
