1.2 Functions: Many To One Relation Are Function

1. This document discusses functions and function notation. A function is a special type of relation where each element in the domain has only one image. Function notation uses f: x → y, where f maps x to y. 2. Several examples are provided to determine which relations are functions and to evaluate functions for given inputs or find inputs that satisfy given outputs. Questions involve finding images, domains, and ranges of various functions presented in mapping form or algebraic form. 3. Exercises at the end involve evaluating functions, finding inputs that satisfy outputs, determining domains, and identifying values for various functions presented algebraically or graphically. The document provides background on functions and examples and exercises to demonstrate working with different types

1.2 Functions
Notes:
(i) Function is a special relation where every object in a domain has only one
image. A function is also known as a mapping.
(ii) From the types of relation we have learned, only one to one relation and
many to one relation are function.
(iii) Function notation f : x 2x, read as function f maps x to 2x or
f(x)=2x.

Example 1
Determine which of these relations is a functions

a) b) c) d)
A B A B A B A B

7 6 a 7 6
-2 1 2
9 10 b 9 10
0 3 3
11 14 c 11 14
1 4 5
d

Example 2:
1. Given function f : x 3x 2. Find
(a) the image of 1 (c) the value of the object that
maps to itself

(a) The values of a and b
(b) The image of 10 under f
(c) The object of 4

5. Given the function f : x 3 x 1 , find
(a) The image of 2
(b) The value of x if f(x)=x
6. Given the function w : x 4 x + 3 , find the value of p such that w(p) = 23 .
