Create Initials with Distance Formula

This document provides instructions for a project using the distance formula. Students are asked to 1) draw the initial of their name on a coordinate grid using straight line segments across all 4 quadrants, 2) label 5 diagonal line segments with capital letters, 3) list the labeled segments and their endpoint coordinates, 4) calculate and show the distance of each segment using the distance formula in 3 forms - initial values, simplified radical, and decimal, and 5) color in the design without covering the labeled endpoints.

Distance Formula Initial Project

Instructions
1. Create a 2-D image of the first initial of your name on the
coordinate plane.
a. Use only straight, not curved, line segments.
b. Include at least 5 diagonal line segments.
c. Include all 4 quadrants of the coordinate grid in your
design.
2. Choose 5 diagonal line segments and clearly label them with
capital letters at each endpoint. Be sure to include all 4 quadrants when
choosing your segments.
3. On loose-leaf paper, list the name of these 5 segments, and the
coordinates for the endpoints.
4. Calculate the distance for each of the 5 segments.
a. Show the initial values plugged into the distance
formula.
b. Show the final distance as a fully simplified radical.
c. Show the final distance as a decimal rounded to the
hundredths place.
5. Color in your design, being careful not to cover up the labelled
endpoints.
