Wildrose party leader Brian Jean
and Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek
Fildebrandt met with Wildrose party
members at the Strathmore Roadhouse on August 10 to talk about a
number of issues, such as the unite
the right movement, building up the
party and the New Democratic Party
(NDP).
One of the recurring issues was the
idea of uniting the right; that is, uniting the Progressive Conservative (PC)
and Wildrose in the hopes of beating the NDP. Wildrose party members
voiced their worries the move was
similar to what caused voters to lose
confidence in the party in the last
election, when former leader Danielle
Smith and a number of others crossed
the floor to join with the PC party.
Albertans lost confidence in politicians, they lost confidence in both
parties, said Jean. While I have been
going across the province, I have
heard people say they cant trust the
PCs and we cant trust the Wildrose
because of the floor cross. Well we
did floor cross and we had three guys
who didnt floor cross. Now, the best
thing we can do for our party is make
sure Albertans chose us in the next
elections.
Despite the previous loss of confidence in the party, Jean explained the
Wildrose has polled in the lead for the
past five months across the province
except in Edmonton where they were
polling at a close second. At the time,
the party had polled in at 38 per cent
in Calgary with the PC polling in at
24 per cent and the NDP at 18 per
cent. He believes the reason for this
support from Albertans is the party
remains focused on the NDP and
has not played any of these political
games since the elections last year.
The Wildrose has set itself to reporting on the shortcomings of the NDP
government, but Jean states there are
simply not enough journalists to delve
too deeply into these issues.

Unite the right remained on the forefront
of the members questions. Jean said that
all over the province, people felt differently
about the issue, and as someone who is
involved in politics, he sees the need for
uniting the parties in order to win. But that
couldnt happen unless the PC party rids
itself of the political baggage and anyone
who may owe any favours.
Jean also said the party was continuing
to grow as they gained more members and
will continue to appeal to the one million
voters in Alberta in order to beat the NDP
in the next election in 2019.
Jean was also asked about the situation
in Fort McMurray. He resides in the town
and is MLA for the Fort McMurray-Conklin
area, and is one of the many residents who
lost his home to the forest fires that started
in May this year. He stated many people
who have returned are already rebuilding
as best they can despite the process being
slow going. He said he is already building a
bigger house and has applied for a permit.
I am persistent. If I dont get my way
right now, I plan on being premier in two
years and I will fix it then.

Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra sounds out Strathmore
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor
Strathmore has hosted
country, rock and blues performers, and now residents
will get an intimate and refreshing taste of classical music.
Carlos Foggin, conductor
for the newly-formed Rocky
Mountain Symphony Orchestra (RMSO), is excited about
bringing symphonic music to
rural Alberta. A trained, professional conductor, Foggin
comes from a small farming
community south of Lethbridge and knows how tough
it can be to include a little
culture in day to day living.
We thought it was time to
bring it to rural communities.
It can be tough to get into
the city. Everyone is working and farming, said Foggin. The time and financial
outlay of packing up the kids
and attending a venue in the
city is significant for some
families. We wanted to give
rural families an affordable
alternative.
The idea of bringing a classical orchestra to rural areas
came together last spring
when Foggin and friends
came up with the idea stemming from work in the Calgary Community Orchestra.
The idea to expand to rural
centres was made tangible
when the group gained support through a community
initiative grant from the
Town of Strathmore.
RMSO will be performing light works from Mozart,
Massenet, Wagner, Debussy,
Mussorgsky and Beethoven.
The town is very excited
to see the Rocky Mountain
Symphony Orchestra come
to Strathmore, said Tracy
Simpson, community services co-ordinator with the
Town of Strathmore. This
event is a great fit with our
Community Investment Fund
as it helps celebrate our artistic and cultural community,
[and] enhances our unique
identity and quality of life,
Local artist Bryan Allsopp,
who plays the French horn,
is one of 40-50 members in
the orchestral group. He said
the event could be a great
learning opportunity for everyone.
I think that seeing live
music is an essential experience in order to fully appreciate music performance as
an art form, he noted. Recordings are great and can
introduce and spread great
music throughout the world,
but in my opinion there is
no way to match the physical experience of being at a
live concert and feeling the
sound waves in the performance space. In addition, as

Symphony
Orchestra will debut in Strathmore

an educator I teach music
at SHS the chance for students to experience live performances is a huge learning
tool for the students, both by
exposing them to the masterpieces of the genre, and
by providing them with the
opportunity to get up close
and personal with some of
the top performers on their
respective instruments. We
took music students from
CMJHS and SHS to see the
CPO [Calgary Philharmonic
Orchestra] perform last year,
and even though the students
had heard examples of the
pieces beforehand, the experience of hearing the music
live and seeing the skill and
hard work of the musicians
in person was a major motivator and an eye-opening
experience for the students.
Classical music is heard on
background tracks in movies,
videos and even cartoons.
Classical musics architecture
has all the components of
structure and form that can
lead to understanding the
basics of any music genre.
Foggin said children benefit
from seeing how members of
the orchestra use teamwork
to produce something magical.
Really, its the sound track
of our lives, said Foggin.
The RMSO will be in concert in Strathmore at the
Travelodge on Sept. 24. Tickets can be purchased online
at rockymountainsymphony.
ca.
Since the Travelodge has
a ballroom, we thought it
would be a fun start for the
group, said Foggin about the
venue. Why not come out
and listen? It is the first time
something this size has come
to Strathmore. Its affordable,
local and something fun to
do on a Saturday night.

Lions exchange a success
for two Scandinavian girls
SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Reporter
From July 10 to Aug. 6, Nikoline Binderup and Sara Jaatinen from Denmark
and Finland, respectively, ventured to
Strathmore as a part of the Lions International Exchange.
For the two, European travelling is
familiar, but coming to Canada was an
entirely new experience, especially as
part of an exchange.
Binderups entire flight was prepaid
by her local Lions club, but she had no
say in where she was going to be sent
after being accepted. The two choices
the club was considering were Mexico
and Canada, and fortunately for her,
she was able to travel to what she
called her dream destination.
Jaatinens experience was drastically
different, with her local Lions club allowing her to choose three countries,
and then having her choices considered and finally decided. In addition,
she was granted 400 (400 Euros) for
her travels.
Two Strathmore-area families Clarence and Deanna Kooistra and Craig
and Jana Kopp invited the two students into their homes to stay. Jaatinen
and Binderup expressed their desire
to be immersed in a Canadian lifestyle
while still taking part in the many
tourist opportunities available. In response, the families toured around the
province to several national and provincial parks such
as those found in
Drumheller and
Banff.
In Drumheller,
the girls visited
the Royal Tyrrell Museum and saw
the hoodoos; and in Banff and area
they were able to view the breathtaking view of Lake Louise. In addition,
the students were able to experience
uniquely Calgarian activities, such as
spectating at the North American competition at Spruce Meadows, watching
a Calgary Stampeders game and taking
in the chuckwagons and midway at the
Calgary Stampede. As part of their exchange, Jaatinen and Binderup were
also able to take in the natural beauty
of the Rocky Mountains in a week-long
international camp in Waterton.
From something as simple as purchasing North American clothes and
candy, to travelling to some of Canadas most internationally coveted destinations, the trip was an overwhelmingly positive experience, and both
girls expressed their hope of coming
back soon.
If the prospect of travelling or hosting is something you are interested
in learning more
about, please contact your local Lions club for further information.

Crayons - Everyones favourite colouring utensil, the crayon, ranks #18
on the list of most recognizable scents, according to a study done by
Yale University. In the Color Census of 2000, blue was voted the
favourite crayon colour. The worst? Tan, tumbleweed and spring green.
By the time a little one turns 10, they will have worn down
approximately 730 crayons and will have spent about 28 minutes per
day colouring (on average).
Pencils - Pencils are not only good in the classroom, but they can be
used in zero gravity, upside down and even under water. The average
classroom pencil can write approximately 45,000 words (or draw a line
that is 56 kilometres long). Thats a long life!

Supporting Canadians in Rio

With the Rio Summer Olympic games well underway, Id
like to congratulate our Canadian athletes on their accomplishments.
Canadians understand that during Olympic Games, first
past the post decides the winner of each game. The same
goes to the Stanley Cup playoffs, or the Grey Cup playoffs.
The team with the most points is the winner, and that is
a good way of determining who made the best effort and
should be recognized as a champion or winner.

When you elect federal Members of
Parliament in Canada, since we became a country in 1867, we have successfully had peace, order, and good
government through the First Past the
Post electoral system. It simply means
that the candidate with the most
votes in any given electoral district, is
elected in that district. This was true
in Bow River in October 2015, and in
the other 337 federal electoral districts,
also called ridings, across Canada. We
have the same system in all Canadian
provinces, and at the municipal level as
well. It has worked well over the last
hundred plus years, it has rendered
stable governments for Canadians.
Now, the Liberal government wants
to change the way Canadians vote,
based on a promise in their 2015 campaign platform.
It seems like the system has accomplished its intended goal of delivering
stable governments. The Conservative
Party has been clear, that before making such a crucial change to the basic
tenets of our democracy, the government must give all Canadians a say
through a national referendum.
Because I believe the First Past the
Post system has in fact served us well,
I believe its critical that in this referendum, a question must ask Canadians
if they are satisfied with First Past the
Post as the way they elect M.P.s. Recent polls have said 73% of Canadians
demand a referendum on electoral reform, and we expect The Liberal government to respect that very large majority of Canadians.
The Conservative Party will respect
the results of any national referendum,
and we hope the Liberal government
will do the same. You will soon receive
a householder, my quarterly newsletter
at your door. In it, you will find a survey that I hope you will complete, so
that your voice will be heard on electoral reform.
Please feel free to share your concerns about the electoral reform plan
with my office, which can be reached
at martin.shields@parl.gc.ca, or 613992-0761, or my Brooks office at martin.shields.c1@parl.gc.ca, or 1-844-2410020.

Glad all over (thanks Dave Clark 5!)
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Ive been trying to become a happier
person lately. Those of you know me,
probably think I am pretty happy. I like
to socialize, I have good friendships, I
love my teaching job, and being around
high school students.
However, if you were to see me away
from all that, or if I let my guard down,
Im not such a happy person. In fact, I
have come to see myself as a performer.
I teach, try to make my students have
fun while they learn, and I try to be
polite and fun in public as a councilor.
I also find that pretty exhausting. Like
some of you, when the performance at
work, or in front of people is over, I
crash.
And that usually means in front of
the TV. I tell myself that its a good rest
after a long, busy day. However, what
Im slowly starting to realize is that is
basically a thief. In a book called the
100 Simple Secrets of Happy People,
TV robs our time, and never gives it
back.
I am now starting to believe this.
Ive caught myself watching hours of
House Hunters waiting to see which
home in Dallas the young couple will
pick! I love my own house, Im not
shopping why am I watching strangers agonize over counter tops and
walk-in closets? Those hours over an
evening, a week, or a month, could be
better spent doing things I enjoy, or
could do, to improve myself!
I dont want to come across as lecturing you, we all have our own hobbies
and ways of relaxing. I guess Im trying
to show that with my own struggles at
becoming a happier person, you may
see some of your own situations.
For example, I am not normally a
positive person. For my students and
the public, I try to show positivity at
all times. Again, when the curtain
comes down, and Im not performing,
I tend to be more cynical. What I need
to learn, is to look at the bright side
of life.
My whole life has been like this: if
20 good things happened in a day, and
one unpleasant one, I will dwell on the
bad event. If a lawyer had a success
rate of 95 per cent, Im pretty sure he/
she would be thrilled. I need to find
that satisfaction in things. I also tend to
let things really get to me and sit with
me. I envy people who are never bothered by what others say, or do, and can
move on.
My skin is far too thin, and past hurts
stay with me too long. What I need to
learn (and maybe youre like me), is
that if I let people and bad experiences
rent space in my head, then I have less
room for the good stuff!
I (and maybe you) need to find ways
to let things go and replace negative
thoughts with positive ones. What harm
can it do us, to try not to let negatives
fester in our minds? Its like that classic Monty Python movie Life of Brian
where three men are being crucified
on crosses. They break out into a song
called Always Look on the
Bright Side of Life!
A crazy example, but why
couldnt being positive help
us more?
I (and maybe you, too) am
not a risk taker. My parents
let me quit things as a kid
if I didnt like them, or if I
got spooked. Swimming lessons, skating, my mom even
said I could quit University
when I had hit a low point
in my studies! Because of
that, I fear change, and have
an urge to walk away when
things get really tough. I
have to force myself to keep
on keeping on. Luckily,
when it mattered most, I was
able to persevere. I got two
degrees, took swimming as
part of a BPE (while I was
taking Fear of Swimming
classes at night!), and won a
seat in Public Office.
This may sound dumb, but
what I really want is to ride a
motorcycle again! I have the
green light (sorry about
the pun) from Deb, but Im
still fighting the fear of what
might happen what if I
crash? An article I read on
this mentioned FDRs famous
quote about Fear, where he
suggested that the fear can
become worse than the thing
feared. Maybe its time to try
and ride again?
Two things happened this

Librarys popularity
continues to soar
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Although a new school year is starting soon, the fun events planned at the
Strathmore Municipal Library are not
over yet.
The past few months have seen large
numbers of people come through the
library doors to enjoy events such as
breaking the record for the most cardigans worn in a library, the secret service day and the library Olympics.
The library has been crazy busy,
said Alexis McKenzie, the interim director of library services. Sometimes it is
a bit weather-dependent or depends on
the event. Especially with the summer
reading program bringing in people
regularly, traffic has been great. We
have huge numbers of people coming
into the library and its a wonderful
thing to see.
It is a hope and a dream that we
could have a bigger building to accommodate such numbers but it is nice to
see so many people at the library, she
added.
One event McKenzie is most looking forward to is Pokmon week.
The Strathmore Library and part of
the building that houses Family and
Community Support Services (FCSS)
are poke stops on the Pokmon Go
app. During Pokmon week, which
runs from Aug. 22-26, the library will
be dropping five lures per day during
the hours of 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. There
will also be a photo competition: if you
catch a Pokmon in the library during
the week, take a picture of it and post
it to the Strathmore Municipal Library
Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account, and you could possibly win an
iTunes or Google Play gift card.
The library recently hosted Act the
Week, run by 11-year-old Charlie Ziehr.
The event received a number of positive reviews. A similar event will run
from Sept. 19 - Dec. 12 called Winging
It, where youth will be taught different acting skills. Alex Keeling, a library
staff member, will run it every second
Monday evening. Due to the previous
success of the event and the amount of
inquiries, there will be two age groups
participating. The first is the newly added 7-11 year old age group, while the
second is for 12 years old and older.
Registration for Winging It opens on
Aug. 22 for both age groups.

attempting to break another: the larg-

take place on Aug. 19.
September will continue to be a busy
month for the library. Minecraft Mania
will be returning for another year and
McKenzie said spots will fill up fast
when registration opens on Aug. 29.
September is also food for fines
month. For each non-perishable food
item or personal hygiene item brought
in, the library will deduct $2 from outstanding book fines.
It is a great way to get your fines off
your accounts and also to support people in need, said McKenzie, who added
the items will be donated to the Wheatland County Food Bank.

According to Tracy Simpson, recreation coordinator for the Town of
Strathmore, the purpose of the Recreation and Parks Enhancement Committee will be to work collaboratively
with town administration and council,
community stakeholders and associations to build a fund development
program to assist in the creation of
recreational opportunities and park
development for the residents of
Strathmore.
There are lots of funds provided
by private enterprises, non-profits and
government bodies that a municipality
isnt eligible for, and so by creating a
society we will be able to access those
funds, said Simpson.
Funds will be raised by applying for
special grants with certain institutions,
such as Alberta Lotteries grant funding and casino funding.
Simpson stated the committee
could reach potential funding sources that weve never been able to utilize in the past.
Previously, the outdoor rink in
Strathmore received a community
infrastructure enhancement grant
through Alberta Lotteries. But there
has never been funding for any townspecific projects, so that is the reason
for creating the new committee.
Parks, pathways and other projects will be slated for improvements,
and the committee will identify areas
where they want to raise money.
So the first project may be, and I
dont know for sure, but it may be
helping raise money for the fieldhouse that we are building. Or they
may identify a section of pathway
thats important and isnt slated on the
plans for a few years and they want to
see funds, said Simpson.
The committee is hoping to alleviate
asking taxpayers to fund these types
of projects.
If we can raise funding from these
sources, then we can do more parks
and rec development without always
going to our tax base to pay for them,
she said. There will be extra dollars
to create more infrastructure without
paying for it through tax dollars.
Simpson says they hope to recruit
at least a six-to-seven-member board,
but this number could reach as high
as 12. To become involved with the
Recreation and Parks Enhancement
Committee, contact Tracy Simpson at
the Town of Strathmore.

At the time of year when the Snider
family of Rosebud usually sets off to
school parents David and Jeany as
instructors at Rosebud School of the
Arts, and sons Weston and Donovan
as middle-school and high-school students this year theyll set off for two
months of travel in six countries, touring, visiting, lecturing, discussing, resting and helping others in need.
In early September, the family will
fly to Milan, Italy, then on to the Swiss
Alps, where theyll take two weeks to
retreat and foster discussion in LAbri,
Switzerland, Jeany Snider wrote in an
email from the family.
Filderstadt, Germany will be their
next stop, visiting the family of a friend
Jeany Snider has known since high
school. From Germany, theyll fly to
Uganda, where theyll reconnect with
a former Rosebud student and visit the
child they sponsor through World Vision.
In Nairobi, Kenya, theyll meet Julisa
Rowe, who teaches indigenous drama
and music at Daystar University and
does international drama and music
ministry.
Their last stop is nine days in Tabora, Tanzania. With an organization
called Jumas World, theyll visit Jumas
Worldss arts-based school, visit school
families, and help the village of Inala
establish solar light-ing and obtain permanent clean water.
Im really excited! I think it will be
great experience for everyone, said
Weston in the email. He may miss his
friends, he said, but he looks forward
to learning new traditions and customs, and more about the
world. Hes especially excited about being in a small mountain town in Switzerland.
Its going to be an incredible experience, said his older
brother, Donovan, a chance for us to learn, grow, explore
and experience things together as a family.
Im most excited about spending time in Africa, Donovan added, though he said it may be challenging to cope
with the heat. I trust that it will be amazing, and I will get a
real, first-hand view of what life is like for people who live
in a variety of lifestyles in Africa.
The idea for the trip started four years ago, when the family felt the need to bust out and expand, Jeany Snider said.
They explored enlarging their home, or building a new one,
but instead, she said, we invested in this idea of traveling
and spending time in a new culture, and learning more
about our world and ourselves by dwelling in a new land
with new people and a new language.
This is the kind of cultural adventure that makes a person more dynamically aware of the world around them,
Donovan Snider said. Something that is becoming increasingly important in a world connected in so many ways.
The Sniders invite others to share in their Jumas World
project, by hosting a fundraiser Aug. 24, 8 to 10 pm in Rosebuds Akokiniskway Gallery. Theyll perform music and theatre that theyll also perform on the trip, including a Swahili
song that the audience can sing along with, wrote David
Snider in the e-mail. Guest artists will also perform. Jeanys
paintings, homemade cookies and artisan bread will be for
sale.
To learn more about the fundraiser or donate sale items,

A grand garden
BRAD EVERETT
Times Contributor
Quitting farming 10 years
ago, freed up time for Erwin
Hoelscher to focus on his
first lovegardening.
I didnt enjoy tractor driving, he said.
So while he takes care of
St. Ritas church yard and
cemetery in Rockyford, as
well as a couple of other
yards and acreages, Hoelscher can spend most of his
time in his own yard, located
six miles north of Highway 1
on Range Rd 233.
It takes almost three full
days to plant all the flowers
in the yard, usually around
the beginning of May, but
he continues to add flowers
throughout the summer as
greenhouses and garden centres have sales.
Hoelscher
also
plants
a large vegetable garden,
which includes corn that he
starts in his greenhouse.
I stagger the plants so we
can have six weeks of corn,
he said.
Mom liked this stuff and
so she got me started working with her, said Hoelscher.
His father bought the farm
in 1938 and he has spent his
whole life there, over the
years expanding the garden,
adding trees and this spring
having a waterfall put in.
I saw a display at the
home show in Calgary and
thought it would work well
in the space between the
house and trees, he said.
Hoelscher isnt the only
one pleased with the new addition to the yard.
The robins love it and use
it as a birdbath, he said.
Maintaining the flowers
takes a fair bit of time for
him and his wife Mary Jo.
But its worth it. We so
enjoy the flowers and being
able to have others come and
see it as well, she said.
An important aspect of
the gardens success is the
shelter provided by between
300-400 evergreen trees and
approximately 150 birch and
Swedish aspen. This allows
the plants to take full advantage of the heat and rain, as
well as offers a measure of
protection against storms.
If he can get a couple days
of good weather, Hoelscher
hopes to get some brickwork
laid around the waterfall this
summer.

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Reporter
This fall, Strathmore High School
(SHS) is set to unveil a new band room
to accommodate growing program
numbers and physical shortfalls of the
current space.
Strathmores only public high school
has offered a music program since its
opening, but since then, it has encountered several issues relating to inadequate playing space for students, and
separate rooms for students to practice
while the main room is in use.
SHS is offering the opportunity to
play in a concert band, along with the
diverse experiences of electronic, jazz
and choral music. All of these courses
primarily share the same space.
Bryan Allsopp, now the full time music teacher at SHS who formerly taught
both at SHS and Crowther Memorial
Junior High School (CMJHS) has been
impressing on Golden Hill School Division (GHSD) the need to act on a much
needed update. With 37 students in the
concert band class in 2014-2015, and
the steady increase in expected program numbers, the need for improvements was becoming more dire.
The new band room, an unused portable from Prairie Christian Academys
renovations in Three Hills, is 1,500
square feet, a drastic improvement from
the previous 756 square feet of the second floor space. It features two practice
rooms, an office and a main large ensemble space for a full class to rehearse
in. This will allow students to practice
outside of their regular class time in a
suitable environment for sound at an
instrumental volume, and will not interrupt neighbouring classrooms.
Costs for the transportation and possession shift are not final at this time.
For the next few years, the portable
will be unattached to the main school
building and will be temporarily placed
at the northwest end of the school until
the anticipated extension of the main
building is finished within the next five
to 10 years. The fact that the band room
will be on the ground floor is a major
advance in itself as many of the large
percussion instruments tuning is altered by being tilted and transported at
great distances to prepare for concerts
in the schools gym theatre. With this
inconvenience now behind them, the
program hopes to expand its percussion sections for the future by adding
instruments such as orchestral bells, a
marimba and a gong.
The long-term hope for the program, and especially with the impactful
change of a new band room, is to foster a newfound excitement about music
and to expand the high schools musical
opportunities.
Weve been working a lot since Ive
been here, working on the culture of
the program, making it fun. But also
work so that its something that we can
be successful at, said Allsopp, who led
the 2014-2015 high school concert band
to a third place victory in New Orleans
at the World Strides Heritage Performance Festival.
With growing numbers and space, Allsopp is excited to broaden the scope of
the program by having multiple concert
bands, experimenting with small ensembles and working with the schools
extensive drama program.
Allsopp concluded, As you build it
[music program], it becomes more selfsustaining. You have older siblings who
take it and their siblings want to take it
as well, and then farther down you have
parents who took it and want their kids
to take it, and then it becomes a thing at
the school so people want to do it. People want to be involved. So if its there,
its visible, its strong, showing good results, people will want to participate.

Celebrating Canadas
150th anniversary
MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter
In 2017, Canada will mark its 150th
anniversary of confederation. To help
celebrate this momentous event locally,
the Town of Strathmore is looking to
create a Canada 150 planning committee designed to focus on community
celebrations and legacy projects to help
commemorate this important event.
Town of Strathmores community services coordinator Tracy Simpson said
the town is looking for community volunteers to sit on the committee and to
help plan the festivities. She noted its
important to consider what the community wants for this type of event.
We love it to come from the community, said Simpson. The town and
council have some ideas, but we really
want it to be driven by the community
and for the community.
Festivities may include special events
or celebrations, and other possible
ideas may involve legacy projects.
According to Simpson, a variety of
funding for this event is available from
different sources.
Theres a lot of funding available
through the federal government and the
Canada 150 program for legacy projects, and so we want to identify what
we think would be great for Strathmore
and apply for some funding, she said.
If you are interested in volunteering
on the Canada 150 planning committee or working on projects related to
Canadas 150th anniversary, a one-hour
information session will be held Thursday, Aug. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Strathmore FCSS office.

Did You Know?
Think eight weeks of summer vacation is too long?
In Chile, summer vacation lasts from mid-December to early March, meaning
Chilean children are off for about 12 weeks.
And in Ethiopia, vacation is 12 to 15 weeks, depending on the school.
Biggest school - The biggest school in the world (in terms of pupils, not area)
is the City Montessori school in Lucknow, India. The school was set up by the
Ghandis in 1959 and has more than 32,000 students!
Thats more than a lot of universities (not to mention a lot of towns.)

Exciting fall at Hope Bridges
MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter
This fall promises to be a good one
for the Hope Bridges Society as it celebrates its 11th year and strives to promote inclusiveness and a sense of community by creating connections for all
adults through the use of art.
Society coordinator Wanda Reinholdt
said there will be a wide variety of interesting fall workshops ranging from
weekly to monthly programming. The
society will also feature additional
shorter workshops offered in one to
four sessions and participants can sign
up for as many sessions as they want.
A new feature this year is a monthly
workshop titled Paint & Refresh. Attendees will be able to paint a picture
on canvas and the society will provide
fun refreshments. There will be stepby-step facilitation.
The society will bring back the drumming circle this fall after a couple of
years absence, and will provide a type
of adaptive drumming that takes into
consideration where an individual is at
with their background and experience.
Go Green Upcycling is a popular workshop that transforms regular
household items into beautiful pieces
of art and this workshop will be offered weekly.
JB Music Therapy will also be facilitating a weekly workshop titled Sing (&
Play) Your High Note. This workshop
enables participants a chance to share
their favourite music and sing as part
of a group.
Knitting and crocheting folk art will
be offered on a bi-weekly basis, and
other shorter workshops offered will
include hand-made pottery, understanding your camera, portrait photography and zentangle.
All workshops are presented in such
a way that the novice up to the experienced artist can easily learn and enjoy
the experience.
We use art as a tool to connect and
bring adults together, Reinholdt said.
Hope Bridges will also be conducting
its annual community project and this
year the chosen project is creating two
vintage bikes. Go Green Upcycling and
knitting and crocheting will partner to
paint and yarn bomb these vintage
bikes. The two bikes will then be auctioned off at the annual auction fundraiser in April 2017.
Prior to this, the society plans on raising money by offering the opportunity
to ride the bikes for a $2 fee in March
2017.
In its fifth year of regular programming, Hope Bridges Society prides itself in maintaining affordable prices for
workshops, ranging from $15-$45.
Reinholdt is pleased with the sense
of community the society has created
and also pleased with the support received from the Town of Strathmore
and Wheatland County.
It is definitely a warm and welcoming community that is encouraging

people and breaking down the barriers
of isolation, she said.
The society is also providing workshops in rural communities this fall.
Pottery is planned for Standard and
Rockyford, while Hussar will feature
zentangle.

Reds take silver at
Canadian championships
MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter
The Strathmore Reds bantam AA baseball team won silver
at the Western Canadian Baseball Championships in St. Albert on Aug. 14.
Head coach Jason Tanton provided skilled leadership to
help guide the team to win provincials and then to win silver
at this major sporting event.
Over the weekend, the Reds played five games. There was
a three-way tie for second place after the round robin between Strathmore, B.C. and Saskatchewan. All recorded two
wins and two losses.
However, Strathmore gained second place after the round
robin since it had the closest games and went on to play
Manitoba in the final, which the Reds lost by a score of 7-0.
According to Tanton, the team did well all weekend but the
final game simply didnt happen in their favour and they just
couldnt find a way to win. The team that we lost to in the
final, we had a 7-6 game with them in the round robin, so we
were right there, he said.
The team did very well considering Alberta has not traditionally medaled at this type of event, said Tanton, who added he is very proud of his team and its accomplishments this

season and noted that team cohesiveness played a
big part in this years results.
The thing that stood out to me the most was we
didnt have any superstars on our team. We had a
slogan all year long that was 14 strong. And that
was we needed all 14 of our players to step in and
play at any time and any place, and thats how we
won provincials and thats how we succeeded at
Westerns, said Tanton.
It wasnt because of one person. It was simply
because we had the best 14 players to make up the
team in the province for sure.
Tanton enjoyed the season and stated: It was
the best season Ive been a part of in my 20 years
of coaching. Its a good group of kids. Theyre just
fantastic.
As for coaching next year, Tanton declined to
comment.
The Gleichen Rodeo took place over the weekend of Aug. 13-14. The rodeo featured events
such as barrel racing, bull riding, wild pony races
and sheep riding.

Contestants at the Gleichen Rodeo
showed off their skills in the summer
heat over the weekend on Aug. 13-14.
The rodeo had a good turnout for the
crowds, with a consistant number of
people coming out to watch both days.
But it was the childrens competitions
the wild pony race and the sheep riding
that saw the biggest crowds.
We had a great crowd, said Holly
Yule, secretary and rodeo organizer.
The family of the contestants come out
but they are small because they travel
so far. But the kids events are all local
we had some kids from Strathmore,
Standard, Hussar and a couple from
Calgary. So the kids events are some of
my highlights of the rodeo.
While the crowds were plentiful, there
was a slight drop in contestant numbers, which Yule puts down to the fact
that there was another rodeo happening during the weekend. As finals are
fast approaching for many of the rodeo
organizations, contestants are trying
their best to make it in to one of them.
The Gleichen rodeo is a dual Foothills
Cowboy Association (FCA)/Chinook Rodeo.
This is the 15th year this group of
organizers, many of whom are family, have been part of this event. They
continue to try to get the rodeos name

out there though use of posters, radio
and word of mouth. Holly is joined by
her cousin Stephanie Yule and sister-inlaw Janet Yule in helping to ensure the
word is out there about the rodeo and
that it is run smoothly on the day.
Jeff Yule, the chief executive of the
organization said a lot of time and effort goes into planning the rodeo but
most of them have full-time jobs and
ranches to run. He commended the
three ladies who plan the majority of
the rodeo, as well as their volunteers
as it helped the rodeo run better. Many
of the volunteers brought along their
children aged from three years old to
late teens, who helped out where they
could too.

Badgers ready for new season
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Registration recently opened for the
Strathmore Community Football Association (SCFA) 2016 fall regular season.
The SCFA operates three football
programs in the Strathmore area, and
in 2015, the SCFA adopted the team
name Badgers.
After a successful spring camp the
number of players interested already
looks promising in the peewee, bantam and senior teams.
We are excepting decent numbers,
said Carl Seafoot, the president of
SCFA. Judging by the start of the first
night, registration looks pretty good so
far.
Seafoot plans on keeping registration open until mid-September to allow for any interested players who
may be away or waiting to see what
their school schedule is like. Until the
games start, the teams will have practices to improve their skills.
Some staffing changes are being
made: Sean Seafoot is now the head
coach of the senior team while Brad
Middlemiss is the head coach of the
bantam team. Middlemiss had origi-
nally stepped down last year as senior
coach due to work conflicts. Doug
Thiessen remains head coach of the
peewee team. There will be no changes to the teams leagues this year.
The peewee team will continue to
play in the Central Peewee Football
League, the bantam team in the Central
Bantam Football League and the senior
team will play their second year in the
Mountain View Football Conference.
Seafoot said he hopes the teams do
well and make it to provincials.
Ultimately it is how well they perform as a team to accomplish that mission, said Seafoot. So it is nice to get
into provincials but its not that easy a
road to get there.
Last year the peewee team won the B
division, but there were no provincial
playoffs for that division. The bantam
had a good regular season but lost in
their league playoffs. The senior team
had some problems in their nine-man
league, but Seafoot has hopes for them
doing better this year.
Regular season games will begin for
the senior and peewee teams around
the beginning of September, while the
bantam team will have to wait until
mid-September.
