In addition some handouts/case studies may be given in class from time to time whenever
the instructor deems it necessary.
Class Format:
Each session students are responsible for reading the text assignments and related articles
(if assigned) as well as any supplementary materials that may be distributed in class.
Assignments are due to be completed on the day indicated in class session. Lectures will
be related to these assigned readings as well as additional relevant materials. Students
will work in small groups to apply lecture/reading material to real-world experiences.
Groups will present brief summaries of their work and the instructor will facilitate an
overall class discussion.
Group Design Project and Presentation:
This will be an end-of-course project, focused specifically on the creation of a training
and development intervention related to an issue or problem in your own organization (or
any organization of your choice). The project will involve (1) the preparation of an
original product ( intervention /a training program), (2) a reference list of research
sources (minimum three required) in correct APA format (APA format is uploaded in the
course website) and (3) an oral presentation to the class on the overall creation of the
product following the steps of the instructional design process. The product and the
reference list should be submitted to the course instructor prior to the presentation.
Suggestions for the project include, but are not limited to, such products as PowerPoint
presentation, training module, process worksheet, informational newsletter, policy or
procedure handbook, comparison chart, assessment forms, job aid, job/workflow design,
and so forth.
The design of the product is to be the key component for the presentation. An in-class
handout of either the actual product or a condensed version should be distributed to all
class members at the time of your groups presentation to facilitate understanding. The
20-minute oral presentation should include discussion of the design process involved in
creating the product in terms of the following five criteria:
-
Why the training program or intervention is needed (needs assessment)?
What organizational culture issues and legal/regulatory implications were
considered?
What training and design principles were utilized (e.g., motivation/learning
concepts, learning environment, techniques/methods, etc.?
How the intervention will be implemented (e.g. audience, scheduling, supporting
or related programs, etc.?
And how the training program/intervention will be evaluated?
This project will be evaluated in terms of the investigative research, the
comprehensiveness and complexity of the product design, and the oral presentation.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
The students are required to buy or get hold of the required textbook by the first week of
the class.
Each student is expected to read all assigned materials prior to class. If you miss a class,
you should check with the instructor to determine what you missed and/or make
appropriate arrangements. It is the responsibility of the student to seek help, when
necessary. Please note that, an absence of more than 3 classes without any prior approval
will automatically lead to an "F" grade irrespective of the student's performance.
In keeping with the demands of the 'real world', each student is expected to turn in
professional quality assignments. Unless an exception is made for specific assignments,
assignments should be prepared using a word processor and formatted professionally.
(Spelling and grammar are important and will be factored into your grade.) Please also
note that there will be no make up for any assignments, quizzes or exams except for
unavoidable circumstances. The make up tests will be harder than the regularly
scheduled tests to ensure fairness for the rest of the class.
Each group can submit their final project and assignments before the deadline of
submission of the report/assignment for prior checking. The students will be given an
opportunity to edit, re-write and correct the mistakes made in the first draft to get an
improved grade.
Each student is responsible for completing all assignments and submitting them on or
before the beginning of class on the due date. If you have any questions regarding an
assignment, you should ask the course teacher prior to the date the assignment is due.
Completing all of the assignments is vitally important for having a better understanding
of the course and achieving a good grade.
