AungSanSuuKyireturnedtoBurmain1988,afteryearslivingandstudying
abroad,onlytofindwidespreadslaughterofprotestersrallyingagainstthebrutal
ruleofdictatorUNeWin.Shespokeoutagainsthimandinitiatedanonviolent
movementtowardachievingdemocracyandhumanrights.In1989,the
governmentplacedSuuKyiunderhousearrest,andshespent15ofthenext21
yearsincustody.In1991,herongoingeffortswonhertheNobelPrizeforPeace,
andshewasfinallyreleasedfromhousearrestinNovember2010.

Early Years
AungSanSuuKyi'sfather,formerlythedefactoprimeministerofBritishBurma,
wasassassinatedin1947.Hermother,KhinKyi,wasappointedambassadorto
Indiain1960.SuuKyiobtainedabachelor'sdegreefromtheUniversityofOxfordin
1969,andin1972,shemarried.Shehadtwochildrenin1973and1977and
thefamilyspentthe1970sand1980sinEngland,theUnitedStatesandIndia.
In1988,SuuKyireturnedtoBurmatocareforherdyingmother,andherlifetooka
dramaticturn.

In1962,BurmadictatorUNeWinstagedandcarriedoutacoupd'tatinBurma,
whichspurredintermittentprotestsoverhispoliciesforthesubsequentdecades.

By1988,hehadresignedhispostofpartychairman,essentiallyleavingthe
countryinthehandsofamilitaryjunta,butstayedbehindthescenestoorchestrate
variousviolentresponsestothecontinuingprotestsandotherevents.

SuuKyireturnedtoBurmafromabroadin1988,amidsttheslaughterofprotestersrallyingagainstUNeWinand
hisironfistedrule.Shebeganspeakingoutagainsthim,withdemocracyandhumanrightsattheforeofher
struggle.Itdidnottakelongforthejuntatonoticeherefforts,andinJulyof1989,themilitarygovernmentof
Burmanwhichwasrenamedthe"UnionofMyanmar"in1989placedSuuKyiunderhousearrestandcutoff
anycommunicationshemighthavewiththeoutsideworld.
ThoughtheUnionmilitarytoldSuuKyithatifsheagreedtoleavethecountry,theywouldfreeher,sherefusedto
doso,insistingthatherstrugglewouldcontinueuntilthejuntareleasedthecountrytociviliangovernmentand
politicalprisonerswerefreed.In1990,aparliamentaryelectionwasheld,andthepartywithwhichSuuKyiwas
nowaffiliatedtheNationalLeagueforDemocracywonmorethan80percentoftheparliamentaryseats.The
electionresults,though,werepredictablyignoredbythejunta.Twentyyearslater,theyformallyannulledthe
results.
SuuKyiwasreleasedfromhousearrestinJuly1995,andthenextyearsheattendedtheNLDpartycongress,
underthecontinualharassmentofthemilitary.Threeyearslater,shefoundedarepresentativecommitteeand
declareditasthecountry'slegitimaterulingbody,andinresponse,inSeptember2000,thejuntaonceagain
placedherunderhousearrest.ShewasreleasedinMayof2002.
In2003,theNLDclashedinthestreetswithprogovernmentdemonstrators,andSuuKyiwasyetagainarrested
andplacedunderhousearrest.Hersentencewasthenrenewedyearly,andtheinternationalcommunitycameto
heraideachtime,callingcontinuallyforherrelease(tonoavail).

Arrest and Election


InMayof2009,justbeforeshewassettobereleasedfromhousearrest,SuuKyiwasarrestedyetagain,thistime

chargedwithanactualcrimeallowinganintrudertospendtwonightsatherhome,aviolationofhertermsof
housearrest.Theintruder,anAmericannamedJohnYettaw,hadswumtoherhousetowarnherafterhavinga
visionofanattemptonherlife.Hewasalsosubsequentlyimprisoned,returningtotheUnitedStatesinAugust
2009.
Thatsameyear,theUnitedNationsdeclaredthatSuuKyi'sdetentionwasillegal,underMyanmarlaw.InAugust,
however,SuuKyiwenttotrial,andwasconvictedandsentencedtothreeyearsinprison.Thesentencewas
reducedto18months,however,andshewasallowedtoserveitasacontinuationofherhousearrest.Those
withinMyanmarandtheconcernedinternationalcommunitybelievedthattherulingwassimplybroughtdownto
preventSuuKyifromparticipatinginthemultipartyparliamentaryelectionsscheduledforthefollowingyear(the
firstsince1990).ThesefearswererealizedwhenaseriesofnewelectionlawswereputinplaceinMarch2010:
Onelawprohibitedconvictedcriminalsfromparticipatinginelections,andanotherbarredanyonemarriedtoa
foreignnationalfromrunningforoffice(SuuKyi'shusbandwasEnglish).
InsupportofSuuKyi,theNLDrefusedtoreregisterthepartyunderthesenewlawsandwasdisbanded.The
governmentpartiesranvirtuallyunopposedinthe2010electionandeasilywonavastmajorityoflegislativeseats,
withchargesoffraudfollowingintheirwake.SuuKyiwasreleasedfromhousearrestsixdaysaftertheelection.
InNovember2011,theNLDannouncedthatitwouldreregisterasapoliticalparty,andinJanuary2012,SuuKyi
formallyregisteredtorunforaseatinparliament.OnApril1,2012,followingagruelingandexhaustingcampaign,
theNLDannouncedthatSuuKyihadwonherelection.AnewsbroadcastonstaterunMRTVconfirmedher
victory,andonMay2,2012,SuuKyitookheroathandtookoffice.

Awards and Recognition


In1991,SuuKyiwasawardedtheNobelPrizeforPeace.ShehasalsoreceivedtheRaftoprize(1990),the
InternationalSimnBolvarPrize(1992)andtheJawaharlalNehruAward(1993),amongotheraccolades.
InDecember2007,theU.S.HouseofRepresentativesvoted4000toawardSuuKyitheCongressionalGold
Medal,andinMay2008,U.S.PresidentGeorgeBushsignedthevoteintolaw,makingSuuKyithefirstpersonin
Americanhistorytoreceivetheprizewhileimprisoned.
