AUTOMATED ROBOTIC
SAMPLE PREPARATION CELLS

1 of 3

For lower operating costs with improved sample quality!

Labtech Essa automate key items of mineral laboratory sample preparation equipment and then
bring them together in a cost effective and efficient integrated system (or cell) in which the transfer
functions between items is performed automatically by an industrial quality electro-mechanical
robot.
A basic Labtech Essa Robotic Sample Preparation Cell will typically include a crusher/ rotary
sample divider combination and a Labtech Essa AutobatchTM ring mill; with sample handling and
transfer operations being performed by an integrated industrial quality electro-mechanical robot.
Robotic functions can be readily changed on site using a compact hand-held teaching tablet.
Other equipment combinations are available and multiple units of any item can usually be accommodated. The generally compact, self-contained physical configuration of these systems and their
need to be confined within a secure, operator free area suggest the appropriate name for such a
system is a cell.

START

A typical basic automated robotic sample preparation cell set up

on a temporary basis in our workshops. The three key items of
preparation equipment are a Labtech Essa Nugget TM jaw
crusher discharging directly in to a rotary tube type sample
divider and a Labtech Essa Autobatch TM ring mill (which is
only part shown to the left of the robot). At this particular time in
the operating sequence the robot is about to tip the in-feed
sample in to the jaw crusher.

AUTOMATED ROBOTIC
SAMPLE PREPARATION CELLS

2 of 3

Why automate?
Labtech Essa Automated Robotic Sample
Preparation cells can reduce overall
operating costs and improve the quality of
the prepared samples:

Labtech Essa Automated Robotic Sample

Preparation cells offer maximum long term
operational flexibility and reliability
and require minimum space:

An automated robotic system can operate on

a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week basis to
better service the operational needs of the
laboratory or mining operations.
Each sample is subjected to exactly the
same protocol to assure maximum replication
of sample quality. There are no short cuts,
mixed samples or contamination mistakes.
The overall system is able to be operated at
its optimum level of performance all day,
every day without being subjected to any
operator abuse. Unscheduled down time is
minimised and maintenance costs are lowered.
Elimination of direct operators reduces
occupational health and safety costs. The cell
is generally dust and noise enclosed thereby
also reducing the risk to associated personnel.

Automated robotic sample preparation cells

are fully assembled and tested at our factory
before delivery. Customer training in all
aspects of operation of the cell is also given
at that time. Site installation time and costs
are therefore minimised and operations are
up to speed in the shortest practical time.
Individual items of equipment within the cell
can usually be replaced or additional items
added. The cell is therefore able to be modified to suit changing operational, protocol or
process requirements. Reprogramming of the
robot to suit these changes can be done
readily at site.
Extensive, higher maintenance mechanical
material handling systems are avoided. The
industrial quality robot is compact and reliable
and has been very well tested around the
world in automotive assembly plants.
Robotic cells require minimum floor space
and head room.

The robot tipping crushed sample in to a

Labtech Essa Autobatch TM ring mill

..and then recovering the milled sample

ready for delivery to the next station.

AUTOMATED ROBOTIC
SAMPLE PREPARATION CELLS

Preparing for the benefits of automation

Current sample preparation procedures need to be re-evaluated to assure maximum benefits are
achieved from automating the process. Inherent changes are possible as a direct result of the
human element being eliminated. Material handling limitations (weight lifting limits etc) are removed
and safe guards against the variations caused by individual operators can be eliminated.
Specific improvements are also possible because of the semi to fully automated nature of individual
items of equipment within a robotic cell. Sample division and milling are two areas which should be
carefully reviewed to assure the full potential of the latest developments in these is realised. The
method of presenting the samples to the cell also needs to be reviewed. There will be a requirement to improve the accuracy of placement of samples to assure they are physically positioned
where the robot expects them to be. Also, opportunity exists to expand the degree of automation
integrated in to the system by, for example, having it respond to the mass of each individual sample
by automatically determining any subsequent sample division procedure. The down stream use of
the prepared sample product should also be reviewed. The method of handling the sample (reusable container, sample packet, vial etc) and/or the use to which the sample is to be put (fire assay,
AZTEC analyser etc) can make it viable to expand the operating parameters of the robot.
A particular benefit of automated robotics is the ability to expand the cell at some later time. Options which may be difficult to justify in the initial installation will typically be able to be added later.
Proper consideration of these expanded capabilities at the time of original design will, logically,
make it even easier to facilitate their later addition.

Labtech Essas experienced mineral laboratory professionals welcome the

opportunity to work with you in evaluating the possibilities for a robotic cell at
your site.
The method of presenting the feed sample
and removing the prepared sample (and any
residue) is an important integral part of
designing an automated robotic cell. In this
demonstration photograph the dried feed
sample has been pre-weighed and placed in
a stainless container and manually
positioned at the location from which the
robot is required to collect it. Alternate types
of container and delivery methods can be
accommodated in the design of cells.
Cells can be designed to automatically
weigh individual feed samples and then use
that weight to signal automatic downstream
adjustments (such as the cut ratio of a
sample divider) within the cell.

Laboratory
ROLL CRUSHERS
Plain & Toothed rolls for intermediate size reduction
Labtech Essa roll crushers are designed for rapid, controlled size reduction of ore, mineral or rock
prior to metallurgical testing or further milling or grinding. They are typically applied in laboratory or
pilot plant applications after primary reduction of the infeed material in a jaw crusher or similar. The
nipping action of two off same diameter individually powered contra-rotating rolls produces an ideal
crushing environment for a wide variety of materials. Product sizing is controlled by an (adjustable)
gap setting between the 2 rolls. One roll is heavy duty spring mounted as protection against
uncrushable material attempting to pass between the rolls. Roll crushers operate with a minimum
of dust generation and produce a material with a tight size envelope containing a minimum of fines.

WESCONE 300
Cone Crusher
A unique, compact, high speed, high reduction ratio cone crusher
for sample crushing in laboratories and sampling systems

The Wescone 300 features a unique, internationally patented, simultaneous double crushing
action that assures rapid reduction of the feed
material and minimises production of oversize
discharge to typically less than 15%. Test and
production crushing has produced reduction
ratios of up to 20:1 with throughputs up to 1 Kg
per second**. The centre of the Wescone
crushing action is close to the eccentric mass
of the crusher which means lower out of balance forces allowing higher operating speeds.
The Wescone can be operated at a speed to
generate maximum fines or at a slower speed
to produce less fines and a higher proportion of
particles closer to the crushing gap setting.
Materials routinely crushed by the Wescone 300 include iron ore,
bauxite, nickel ore, high carbon ferro chrome, silicon slag,
manganese, gold bearing ores and cement clinker. The diversity of
these products reflect the versatility of the crusher and its ability
to handle almost any crushable product.

DRYING OVENS
For drying mineral samples prior to sample preparation
Labtech Essa offer four standard sizes of well proven electrically heated oven that have been
specifically designed to withstand the corrosive environment inherently created within them by the
combination of high temperature, moisture and often chemically active
atmosphere created by the drying process. Each is supplied as
standard with one or more wheeled trolley incorporating a
number of heavy duty wire mesh racks on which the
samples to be dried are placed. Large diameter,
heavy duty wheels are fitted to assure the trolley
can be readily rolled in to and out of the cabinet.
The floor of the cabinet is of 5 mm steel plate to
make it even easier for the trolley(s) to be rolled.
The cabinet comprises a solidly constructed
welded steel frame of heavy gauge rectangular
hollow section steel tube clad internally with grade
304 stainless steel and externally with zinc anneal
sheeting. The external surfaces of the cabinet are
also painted. Moisture within the cabinet is prevented from passing through the internal walls to
corrode the cabinets framework by a combination of
the use of blind stainless steel rivets and specific
sealing of all internal joints. Robust refrigeration style
handles are fitted to the cabinet door/s which allow
external and internal operation. A stainless steel fan
assembly is integrated in to the cabinet in a manner
which assures the moving air within it is constantly recirculated over the electric heating element/s and is as
evenly distributed within the cabinet as practical. Manually adjustable inlet and outlet vents are
provided to allow the air flow through the cabinet to be controlled for optimum drying performance.
Each oven is supplied as standard with digital temperature controls incorporating automatic over
temperature control. A separate thermocouple and mechanical thermostat circuit is also installed as
further over temperature protection.

ESSAIR DUST COLLECTORS

A UNITISED RANGE OF DUST COLLECTORS TO SUIT DUST & FUME
APPLICATIONS IN MINERAL PREPARATION LABORATORIES
Labtech Essa manufacture a standard range of high
efficiency fabric filter type ESSAIR model dust collectors
for removing airborne dust particles and fume to 2 micron
particle size. They find application in removing dust from
mineral sample preparation areas and lead fumes from
fire assay areas. A user friendly feature of this range is
ability to access the bags from the clean air side of the
units for inspection or maintenance purposes. The
ESSAIR is a single compartment automatic, self-cleaning
reverse pulse-jet type dust collector. The dust laden air
enters the collector through an inlet located at the side of
the housing. The housing contains a number of 150mm
diameter cylindrical fabric filter bags, supported over a
wire cage framework and installed vertically. The dust
laden air passes through these filter bags, depositing the
dust on the outside surfaces of the bags and then passes
up through to the clean air plenum at the top of the
housing from which it is exhausted to the atmosphere.
The filter bags are periodically cleaned automatically by
pulses of compressed air injected down into the bags,
vibrating the fabric and dislodging the dust from the
outside surfaces. The dislodged dust falls into the sealed
collecting hopper integrated into the bottom of the dust
collector housing. The hopper is emptied by the operator
as required depending on the dust loading.

ESSAIR dust collectors and ducting

being prepared for delivery

Only one row of bags is cleaned at once assuring the collector is continuously operational. An
optional air pressure differential system can be supplied to constantly monitor the condition of the
filter bags.
Access to the filter bags for inspection or maintenance is via the lid on the roof of the collector
housing, on the clean air side of the bags. The bags are individually removed vertically through the
clean air plenum assuring minimal exposure to personnel to any collected dust or fume. Each
ESSAIR is supplied complete with electric motor driven fan assembly, motor starting & protection
controls, adjustable air pulse timing controls and collection hopper. The customer need only connect the required power and compressed air supplies and provide dust extraction duct work to the
dust extraction points.
STANDARD ESSAIR UNITS ARE AVAILABLE AT 2200, 3300, 4400, 5500, 6600, 7700 &

PREPAIR COMPACT DUST COLLECTORS

1 of 2

A COMPACT, LOW HEADROOM DUST COLLECTOR FOR SMALLER SAMPLE

PREPARATION & FIRE ASSAY AREAS
SO COMPACT IT CAN BE SHIPPED UPRIGHT IN A STANDARD CONTAINER!

The PREPAIR is a compact, single compartment, multicartridge type dust collector with automatic reverse pulse
jet self-cleaning. It finds application as a dust collector at
smaller mineral sample preparation facilities and as a lead
fume collector at fire assay laboratories. It is a particularly
suitable accessory for mobile or remote area facilties
requiring an efficient collector that can be set up quickly
with minimum on-site involvement and minimum on-going
maintenance.
The PREPAIRs compact size allows convenient shipping
to most locations around the world in a standard shipping
container and the ability to readily relocate it from one site
to another.
The PREPAIRs self-contained design allows simple and
quick installation and startup. A lightweight concrete pad or
solid wooden bearers is all that is required to support the
unit at ground level.
The PREPAIRs automatic self-cleaning feature assures
continuous operation with minimum attention. Dirty air
Typical Prepair installation
enters the PREPAIR through an inlet in its side from the
(with grille removed from clean air
customers dust or fume collection duct work. The air is
exhaust duct)
passed through filter cartridges for cleaning and then
exhausted to the atmosphere by an integral fan. The filter
cartridges are cleaned automatically by pulses of compressed air from the customers compressed
air system which are released by large, sequentially operated solenoid valves integrated in to the
unit. These direct a momentary air jet through one cartridge at a time which causes the retained
dust on that cartridge to be dislodged. Dislodged dust falls in to a sealed hopper bin integrated in to
the bottom of the PREPAIR. This has to be removed and emptied periodically. An integral air
pressure differential system constantly monitors the cartridges to assure they are performing
satisfactorily.
Two sizes of the PREPAIR are available: the PREPAIR 1500 and the PREPAIR 2300. The 1500 is
a 1500cfm four cartridge unit ideally suited to servicing a crusher and mill in a small sample preparation facility, while the 2300cfm unit would be needed if extraction from an adjacent fire assay area
was also required. Dimensions of the two are given in sheet 2 of this data sheet.

The PREPAIR can be supplied complete with a Labtech Essa duct work
package offering complementary operating efficiency, ease of installation
and low maintenance.

MILLMATE

The MILLMATE is a pneumatically actuated lifting aid for

reducing the manual effort required when moving larger ring mill
bowls between the Labtech Essa model LM1 or LM2 mill and the
work bench.
The Labtech Essa MILLMATE is a special purpose radial slewing hoist for supporting the weight
of the pulverising bowl while being transferred between the laboratory mill and work bench. It is
particularly suited to reducing operator effort when Labtech Essa bigger bowl assemblies such as
the B2000 are being used on the Labtech Essa models LM1, LM1.5 or LM2 mills. Adaptations are
also available for smaller bowls (and a special purpose adaptation is standard with the Labtech
Essa model LM5 mill).
The MILLMATE hoist is
mounted on a vertical mast
that fits conveniently between
the mill and work bench. The
hoisting movement is
achieved pneumatically while
the operator provides the
small amount of manual effort
required for the radial slewing
movement.
The whole bowl assembly is
supported in a weightless
condition during the transfer
between the mill and bench
(and return) in a special cradle
suspended by a link chain
from the tip of the
MILLMATE hoist. The
A Labtech Essa model B2000bowl being carried weightless in the
cradle is manually

to pick up and set down the
bowl. Manoeuvering is quick
and simple, being aided by two thumb operated push buttons in-built in to the cradle for controlling
the pneumatic hoisting motion.

The MILLMATE is particularly suited to use on pneumatically clamped mills because it

shares the same air supply. It is offered as an optional extra for
Labtech Essa model LM1, LM1.5 and LM2 mills.

LABLIFT AUTOMATIC LIFTER

A lifting device for mineral laboratories and sample
preparation sheds with a need to elevate samples in a
controlled manner.
The inability of operators to manually lift mineral
samples safely to heights of more than approximately one meter above ground level has long
been a controlling factor in the overall design of
many sample preparation systems.
The all new Labtech Essa LabLift Automatic
Lifter has been introduced specifically to
address this problem.
The LabLift is a pnuematically actuated
lifting device with a nominal capacity of
approximately 10 to 15 kg. The sample is
elevated in a bucket housed in a sheet metal
and mesh safety enclosure. Portion of the
housing hinges open to allow the operator to
tip the sample in to the bucket at a comfortable height. The whole unit is safety locked
out while the hinged door is open.

Fail safe operation of the hoist is assured by

an automatic lock-up system that locks the
bucket operation in the event of a pneumatics malfunction.
Introduction of the LabLift in to sample
preparation areas will allow more compact
systems to be designed. Equipment such as
crushers and sample dividers will able to be
integrated one on top of the other with
elevated entry points.
More compact systems requiring less floor
area will therefore be easier to achieve,
along with a significant reduction in the
amount of manual handling involved and an
inherent improvement in occupational health
and safety conditions.

BALL MILLS, ROD MILLS

& BOND INDEX MILLS

2 of 2

LABTECH ESSA BOND INDEX BALL AND ROD MILLS

Internationally accepted mineral metallurgical standard test procedures to determine the physical
properties of ores include the Bond ball mill work index and the Bond rod mill work index.
These are empirical indices determined by closed circuit grindability tests developed by F.C.Bond
in the mid 1930s. They require a specific 12 diameter x 12 long (inside dimensions) horizontal
axis ball mill without lifters operating at 70 rpm to perform grindabilities from 28 to 500 mesh and a
12 diameter x 24 long rod mill with a wave type liner operating at 40 rpm to perform grindabilities
from 4 to 65 mesh.
Labtech Essa ball and rod mills can be supplied as complying machines with the appropriate
barrels and ball or rod charges. As with our standard range of ball and rod mills described on page
1 of this data sheet, the Labtech Essa BOND INDEX BALL MILL and BOND INDEX ROD MILL are
supplied standard with a barrel and rotating yoke assembly and the electric motor drive; all
mounted on a flat plate for attachment to the customer s work bench..with options of a standalone bench, funnel and screen. These machines will be of essentially the same physical arrangement and size as our standard range but with the customised features required to meet the Bond
specifications.

METALLURIGAL PILOT PLANT MILLS

Labtech Essa also provide 3 sizes of a larger batch or continuous mill style for use in pilot plant
applications and similar. These are 600mm dia. x 900 long, 750mm dia x 900 long and 900mm dia.
x 1200 long. They are typically supplied with mild steel shells with polyurethane or Linatex rubber
linings. They can be supplied with a broad range of options including scoop feeder, trommel discharge, replaceable liners, agitation tank, ball sump, pumps, etc.

BOTTLE ROLLERS

Labtech Essa continuous duty bottle rollers are used for batch wet leaching and wet or dry grinding
or blending of a wide variety of ores, minerals and similar particulate. They find particular application in the acid leaching of finely ground ore in mineral analytical laboratories. The unit is comprised
essentially of rubber covered contra-rotating rollers
on which plastic, ceramic or metallic jars
containing the particulate are placed.
The bottles are then rolled about
their own horizontal axis
until the desired leaching,
grinding or blending
result is obtained.
The electro-mechanical drive system is
continuously rated
consistent with the
need for some materials to be rolled for
extended periods. These
bottle rollers are also quite
suitable for rolling Labtech
Essa ball and rod mill grinding barrels of the type described
on our separate data sheet on that
product range.
Labtech Essa offer 3 roll, 6 bottle and 3 roll, 12
bottle fixed rotational speed models suitable for 5 litre plastic bottles as the basic standard units in
our range. These are available with variable speed drive and timer options. These two standard
models are complemented by a wide choice of other capacities that are tailored to suit specific
customer needs. This can include multi-tier units and the capacity to roll multiple 10 and 20 litre
containers. All units are delivered fully assembled and with power lead and on/off switch ready for

PRESSURE FILTERS
FOR DEWATERING LABORATORY SIZE BATCHES OF SLURRY SAMPLE
AND PROCESS CONCENTRATE
Labtech Essa pressure
filters consist essentially of
a vertical cylindrical barrel
arranged to have a filter
cloth installed at its lower
end and to have a batch of
slurry or process concentrate introduced at its
upper end. The cylinder is
then sealed and
(air)pressurised, forcing the
liquid to be separated from
the solids content and
discharged from the barrel,
leaving the solids behind
as an easily recoverable
filter cake.

CROSS BEATER MILL

For crushing soil, bricks, concrete, rock, cement clinker, coal,
glass, ores, minerals, rare earth products, chemicals, spices,
grain and hundreds of other materials up to medium-hard range
The very popular cross beater mill concept is used for
crushing and grinding a wide assortment of materials
up to the medium hard range within a variety of
industries including construction, environmental,
mineral, chemical, agricultural and ceramic.
Infeed material passes from the mills feed hopper into
a grinding chamber, where it is pulverised between
the hard grooved chamber door and chamber linings
by the impact of 3 rotating beater tips on the beater
arm. Product is discharged through a readily interchangeable screen mesh at the bottom of the chamber that controls the final product sizing.
It is a compact mill, constructed from cast iron, with
the in-built strength and power to tackle really heavy
duty applications, batch or continuous. It is also dust free and easy to clean.
The Glen Creston cross beater mill will process from 200 grams up to a maximum of 50 kg/hr of up
to 30 mm lump size feed, reducing it down to approximately 50 micron. Maximum capacity and
milling performance will vary according to the nature of the product being processed and the
aperture of the output screen mesh fitted. A choice of 14 different screen hole diameters is available.
STANDARD FEATURES:
1.1 kW 2840 rpm electric brake motor drive,
415V, 50hz, three phase
Integral push button starter & motor protection
Mill will not start until grinding chamber door
is closed. Beater arms are braked to an
instant stop if door is opened during operation.
Safety barriers prevent hand access into
moving parts

Culatti

MICRO HAMMER - CUTTER MILL

A bench-top micro mill with the ability to pulverise almost
anything from cotton & wool through plants to rocks in seconds

The Swiss manufactured Culatti is a bench-top

micro mill with the power of a hammer mill and
the cutting action of a knife mill to pulverise
almost anything from plants to rocks in a few
seconds. Its combination of a 500 to 4500
rpm variable hammer speed and a choice of
easily changed discharge screen sizes from 0.2
to 6.0 mm aperture provide the flexibility to
grind a wide variety of products and sizes. A
hardened stainless steel grinding mechanism
provides outstanding resistance to wear. The
Culattis compact size allows ready use on
bench tops and under dust hoods.

Minimum sample quantity

Even as little as a few grams can be pulverised.
Hopper capacity
The standard hopper has a capacity of approximately 120cc.
Product particle sizing & control
The product size can be varied under very
closely controllable conditions by changing the
operating speed of the mill and/or by changing
the aperture of the discharge screens.
Using a 0.5 mm aperture screen and grinding at
maximum hammer speed in a single pass,
medium hard substances can be expected to
be reduced to approximately 100% minus 212
(70 mesh) with 40% being less than 75 (200
mesh).
Screens
These screen apertures are available:
6.0 5.0 4.0 3.0 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.8 0.6 0.5 0.4 0.3 &
0.2 mm.

Stainless steel construction

All parts within the grinding chamber in contact
with the sample are hardened stainless steel.
Dust free operation
Special attention has been paid to the design of
the Culatti mill to assure dust tight operation.
Motor
The mill is driven by a totally enclosed infinitely
variable (between 500 & 4500 rpm) 240 volt
50hz single phase electric brake motor. Overload protection is provided by a button circuit
breaker.
Safety
Opening the mill door triggers a safety switch
that cuts out the motor and actuates the brake.

Models LM1 & LM1.5

Laboratory Ring Mills
Vibratory motor driven mills for rapidly preparing
up to 1.8kg of ore or mineral for analysis
The models LM1& LM1.5 are Labtech Essas reliable and
robust adaptation of the traditional vibratory ring mill that
incorporate an integral 3 phase vibratory duty electric
motor drive. These mills however differ from traditional
mills because of their ability to be fitted with a unique
800cc, 1000cc or 2000cc single puck type grinding bowl in
addition to any standard size of ring and roller grinding
bowl. Details of these grinding bowls are given in a separate data sheet.
The LM1 & LM1.5 mills are used for pulverising ores,
minerals, metallurgical samples, ceramics, soils, aggregates, chemicals and similar particulates. Most samples
can be ground to 95% minus 75 micron in 1 to 3 minutes
depending upon their physical characteristics.
These machines are well suited to laboratories mainly
using traditional ring and roller bowls but who also want to
use the range of higher capacity bowls on an intermittent
basis to prepare larger batches of homogeneous sample.
The two models are virtually identical except for the power of the drive motor. The more powerful
LM1.5 is recommended when the largest bowls are to be used frequently and/or when the mill is to
be connected to a 60 cycle power supply.

MODEL LM2
Laboratory Ring Mill
Vibratory mill for rapidly preparing up to 1.8kg
of ore for mineral for analysis
(with the extra power of a 2.2 kW shaft drive)
The vibratory head of the model LM2 is driven by a universal
shaft powered by vee-belts from a standard, stationary (nonvibrating) 2.2 kW electric motor. This drive arrangement
delivers more power to the grinding bowl and optimises motor
life (because it is not exposed to direct vibration as happens in
traditional integral vibratory motor driven mills). The mill also
differs from traditional mills because of its ability to be fitted
with a unique 800cc, 1000cc or 2000cc single puck type
grinding bowl in addition to any standard size of ring and roller
grinding bowl. Details of these grinding bowls are given in a
separate data sheet.
The LM2 mill is used for pulverising ores, minerals, metallurgical samples, ceramics, soils, aggregates, chemicals and
similar particulate. Typically, samples can be ground to 95%
minus 75 micron in approximately 3 minutes depending upon
their mass and physical characteristics.
The model LM2 is well suited to high volume mineral laboratories regularly preparing large samples in the unique Labtech
Essa single puck style of bowl or to any laboratory remote from the specialised repair services
typically required for integral vibratory motor driven mills.

MODEL LM5
Laboratory Ring Mill

1 of 2

Vibratory ring mill for preparing up to

3.5kg of ore for mineral for analysis
The Labtech Essa model LM5 mill is used for pulverising
ores, minerals, soils, metallurgical samples, ceramics,
aggregates, chemicals and similar particulates. It finds
particular application in mineral laboratories needing to
prepare larger, more representative samples. Typically,
samples of approximately 3 to 3.5 kg mass can be
ground to 90 to 95% minus 75 micron, while larger
samples up to approximately 4 to 5 kg can be reduced to
approximately 0.5 to 0.8 mm particle size (all subject to
the physical characteristics of the material. and the
condition of the grinding elements). Grinding time will be
approximately 5 to 8 minutes.
Labtech Essa are pleased to conduct pre-purchase trials
on customer free supplied samples.

PLEASE ASK FOR OUR DEMONSTRATION VIDEO

The vibratory platform of the model LM5 is driven by a universal shaft powered by vee-belts from a
standard, stationary (non-vibrating) 4 kW electric motor. This arrangement delivers the power
required to drive the large 5 kg nominal capacity grinding bowl integrated in to the head of the mill.
The drive motor is inherently protected from direct vibrational loads.
The design of the bowl is based on Labtech Essa internationally patented concept of a single, solid
flying saucer shaped puck operating in a curved bottom bowl. Only the puck is removed from the
bowl during routine operation. A pneumatically actuated MILLMATE hoist is fitted as standard to
assist in lifting and lowering the puck. The bowl is filled and emptied manually. Residue is vacuumed from the bowl. A vacuum gun is supplied as standard with each mill for connection to the
customers dust extraction system.

MODEL LM5
Laboratory Ring Mill

2 of 2

The pulverising bowl of the Labtech Essa model LM5 mill is permanently attached to the vibrating
platform of the mill during all normal operations. Only the puck is removed; with the aid of the
pneumatically actuated MILLMATE. The bowl is filled and emptied manually.
Residue is vacuumed from the bowl. A vacuum gun assembly is supplied as standard for this
purpose, together with 3 metres of flexible hose for connection to the customers dust collection
system. Some customers prefer to connect direct to their dust collection system with an open
ended flexible hose as shown in the photo at the bottom of
this page and in our demonstration video.
The design of the bowl is based on Labtech Essa internationally patented concept of a single, solid flying saucer
shaped puck operating in a curved bottom bowl. This
concept is recognised to produce a homogeneous sample
which only requires a portion of the milled sample to be
retained for analytical purposes.
The Labtech Essa model LM5 mill is housed in a durable
and good looking fibreglass cabinet lined with sound
absorbing foam. A dust extraction
point is provided at the rear of the
cabinet.
The front half of the cabinet is
quickly and easily removed for
maintenance access. Major
maintenance is facilitated by the
ability to remove the mill from the
cabinet while leaving the cabinet
and MILLMATE in their installed location. Sample preparation facilities with multiple numbers of mills make use of this
capability to quickly install a
spare mill while the original is
taken to the workshop.

LM5 mills installed at a commercial assay laboratory

in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Note this customers
preference to install their own (white coloured)
flexible vacuum hoses for final bowl cleaning and
their introduction of a coarse dust trap between the
mills and their dust extraction ducting

Model ABM 2 AUTOBATCH

(An automated adaptation of the LM2 ring mill)

2 of 3

This Autobatch adaptation of the Labtech Essa model LM2 mill is fitted with a bolted down 2000cc
nominal capacity bowl assembly permanently attached to the mill. The bowl assembly comprises a
large flying saucer shaped puck in a correspondingly curved bottom bowl which is unique to
Labtech Essa and is internationally patented. This bowl concept assures a homogeneous sample is
prepared. Sample is retained in the bowl as a secure and discrete batch for the same length of time
it would usually need to be retained in a standard all manual LM2 mill. At the end of this time a
special hardened valve integrated into the lower surface of the bowl opens to allow the milled sample
to be discharged. Milling and discharge times are readily adjustable. On the completion of discharge,
the mill automatically moves in to a self cleaning cycle to prevent cross contamination between
samples. Residue discharges to the customers dust collection system. All cycles are PLC controlled.
The bowl has an easily opened lid to allow
spot inspection of its grinding chamber.
BASIC OPERATING PROCEDURE
The infeed sample should be dry and be
not more than 10mm particle size. It is
tipped into the infeed chute 1 from which
it gravitates into the grinding bowl 2
(which at thispoint will have its discharge
valve 3 closed). The valve will remain
closed until the sample has been milled
for the predetermined time needed to
achieve the required degree of fineness.
The valve will then open and allow the
milled sample to discharge via the
flexible hose 4 into the saved sample
container 5. The automatic cleaning
cycle will then operate in readiness for
the next sample.
OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE which allow
only a representative portion of the
milled sample to be retained with the
remainder being discharged to the
customers dust collection system. The
homogeneous nature of the sample
prepared by the Autobatch allows this
portion only to be split off in accordance
with recognised sampling protocol.

CONTINUOUS RING MILL

A special adaptation of the Ring Mill capable of processing larger
batches of mineral sample on a continuous flow through basis.
The Labtech Essa continuous ring mill is selected for those applications where ring milling would be the preferred method of reducing a
coarse sample to analytical fineness but the quantity to be milled is
greater than the capacity of a standard ring mill. Ring milling is a
preferred methodology for rapidly reducing coarse mineral, ore and
similar particulate to the degree of fineness required for laboratory
analytical procedures. The resulting sample is homogeneous and
repeatability is excellent. Each batch is processed on a one-at-a time
basis in a sealed bowl to minimise the possibility of contamination
from the outside or the loss of sample as dust. The largest batch that
can be prepared in a ring mill however is only approximately 5kg.
When a need is seen to prepare larger samples, they can be processed in a standard ring mill in smaller batches on this one-at-a-time
basis and then be recombined..or the Labtech Essa Autobatch
ring mill can be used to perform this same function on an automatic
basis (see data sheet).
A practised alternative is to prepare these large samples in a
Labtech Essa Continuous Ring Mill. This is a derivative of the
standard Labtech Essa model LM2 mill fitted with a special bowl
arrangement specifically designed to receive and discharge a flow of
sample on a continuous basis. One or more (usually two) grinding
bowls are fitted. In the two bowl arrangement, one is mounted on top
of the other to allow the first to perform an initial coarse grinding
function. Process rates of 250g to 400g per minute can be achieved
when producing a nominal 150 micron product.

Labtech Essa Continuous Ring Mill

arranged with a segmental type rotary
sample divider accepting the
discharged product.

The performance of the continuous ring mill will vary according to the
physical characteristics of the material being processed. It is therefore
necessary that test work be carried out before purchase to assure the
bowl configuration is optimised for the task to be performed.
The product from the mill will not be as homogeneous as that prepared by the traditional one batch at a time method. When a percentage only of the product discharged from the continuous ring mill is
required to be retained for further downstream processing in the
laboratory, then a Labtech Essa rotary sample divider can be placed
at the mill discharge to assure a representative sample is collected.
The Labtech Essa Continuous Ring Mill complete with its infeed
variable rate electromagnetic vibratory feeder is delivered in a crate
approximately 1450 x 800 x 1500 mm high with a shipping mass of
approximately 480 kg. A typical rotary sample divider would be delivered in a second crate approx. 700 x 700 x 700 mm x 100 kg.

** These bowls consist of an internationally patented Labtech Essa single flying saucer shaped puck operating in a bowl with a
correspondingly shaped bottom surface. The mass of this single puck in combination with the interaction between its lower curved
surface and that of the bowl provides superior pulverising performance. The puck has a conical off-centre hole through it to assist in the
mixing and pulverising of the sample to assure homogeniety. These bowls are of through hardened tool steel construction for optimum
life. A spacer ring may need to be fitted between the bowl and the mill to ensure correct positioning of the bowl under the clamp. An
optional pneumatically actuated MixerMate hoist is available to assist in handling the heaviest bowls.

A high performance vibrating ring mill using traditional ring
& roller grinding elements to pulverise up to 4kg of mineral
sample to analytical fineness.
The Mixermill 4000 is an extension of traditional vibrating ring
milling technology, specifically designed for reducing up to
4000g of coarse rock, ore chips, soils and similar particulates
to predominantly 75 micron in approximately 4 minutes *.
Conventional (but oversize) ring and roller type grinding
elements provide simultaneous pulverising and mixing,
minimising the need for riffle splitting to obtain a laboratory
sample. The bowl has a patented replaceable and reversible
base plate to minimise bowl refurbishment costs.

Built for the toughest conditions

Developed in 1984, the Mixermill 4000 is a heavy duty, high
performance machine designed for hard work. Many
operate in the near continuous around-the-clock environment of commercial assay laboratories where long term
efficiency of performance is the main decision to purchase
criteria. The unique hydraulic drive has proven particularly
effective and reliable, and requires minimal maintenance.
* This is a nominal only performance expectation that will vary according to the
physical characteristics of the material being milled and the operating condition
of the grinding elements. Labtech Essa are able to conduct tests at their factory to
determine how the mill will perform when processing your material.

RING MILL BOWLS

1 of 3

A unique range of bowls from 10 to 1800g nominal capacity

The Labtech Essa programme of ring mill bowls is unique because it includes 3 sizes of
internationally patented high capacity and performance bowls together with a range of
traditional ring and roller type bowls.

The patented bowls consist of a single,

solid flying saucer shaped puck
operating in a bowl with a concave
curved bottom surface. The mass of
this single puck in combination with the
spatula like grinding interaction between its lower curved surface and that
of the bowl provides superior pulverising with grinding performance. The
puck also has an off-centre, truncated
hole through it to assist in the mixing of
the sample to assure homogeniety.
These bowls are of through hardened
tool steel construction for optimum life.
They are available in 800, 1000 &
2000cc nominal capacity.
Labtech Essa unique patented solid
flying saucer shaped puck

Labtech Essa traditional ring and roller style bowls are available in 50, 100, 125, 300 &
400cc nominal capacity. These too are of through hardened tool steel construction as standard, with optional materials available on request.
All bowls in this range are suitable for use on the Labtech Essa model LM1, LM1.5 and
LM2 mills as set out on page 2 of this data sheet (see separate data sheets for mill details).
Ring and roller bowls can be used as replacements for those from other manufacturers.
The patented bowls typically have the ability (when used on a Labtech Essa mill) to reduce
ores, minerals, metallurgical samples, ceramics, soils, aggregates, chemicals and similar
particulates to a nominal 75 product in approximately 3 minutes; with the ring and roller
range typically capable of producing an even finer product in approximately 1 to 3 minutes.
The useable capacity of each bowl will generally be 60 to 80% of its nominal capacity. The
performance expectation of all bowls is subject to the physical characteristics of the sample
being milled and the final particle sizing required.

receivers which are automatically indexed under the final discharge point of a continuous sampling system to collect and store the discharged sample/s. The inlet of all containers except that
being immediately filled is kept sealed against sample loss or the ingress of foreign material.
They are equally suitable for collecting free flowing solids or slurry. The sample collection
containers are typically proprietary line polyethylene flasks which can be readily fitted to and
removed from the carousel and can have screw lids fitted while being transported to the analytical laboratory. Stainless steel containers are an available option. The carousel is housed in a
fabricated steel cabinet with easy access mesh frame doors which allow the unit to be viewed
while operating. Safety switching is fitted to automatically disable the unit if any access door is
opened, with the system automatically returning to its correct operating sequence when reclosed. The carousel can be
indexed manually to bring any

BALL SCREW SAMPLER

(Electric motor driven, for solids)

1 of 2

State of the art technology for the primary and secondary

sampling of falling streams from belt conveyors.
Labtech Essa are the Australian pioneers of a
range of electric motor driven ball screw
samplers that find particular application in
collecting a representative sample from the
material stream being discharged over the
head pulley of a belt conveyor. These are
setting new standards of performance and
reliability that traditional chain, pneumatic and
hydraulic drive samplers can find difficult to
match.
The ball screw sampler maintains genuine
uniform cutter speed through the falling
stream, even when wear eventually occurs.
The concept has been long term field proven
in a broad range of medium to extra heavy
applications.

The ball screw sampler is of simple yet rugged

construction designed for maximum operational availability with low maintenance, in
even the most arduous applications.
The electric motor driven ball screw mechanism produces a very rapid acceleration and
deceleration time and results in a constant
speed drive which does not slow down when
confronted with the falling stream to be sampled. Its combination of a powerful directly
coupled electric motor and the huge mechanical advantage produced by the ball screw and
nut assembly ensures that sampler performance conforms most closely to recommended
sample theory.

Its heavy duty wheels are widely spaced for
maximum stability and are specifically arranged
to resist the torsional loads imposed by the
impact of the falling stream on the cutter.

BALL SCREW SAMPLER

(Electric motor driven, for solids)

2 of 2

The installation of a falling stream (linear) sampler at the discharge end of a belt conveyor is an
internationally preferred method of sampling the
material being carried by that belt conveyor.
Various international standards have been
established to assure the sampler performs in a
manner which assures the collected sample is
truly representative. One of the most relevant
requirements of these standards is the sampling
cutter must travel back and forth through the
falling stream at a uniform rate. Sampling equipment manufacturers have traditionally used
chain, pneumatic or hydraulic drives to satisfy
this requirement. Labtech Essa have been
Australian pioneers in the use of the precision
ground (square) screw thread and ball nut
concept to drive falling stream samplers. This is
a truly positive drive system which by its very
nature is obliged to travel through the falling
stream at a uniform rate. It has none of the
potential elasticity of pneumatics or hydraulics
and will continue to operate at a uniform rate
even when the mechanism eventually begins to
wear. Labtech Essas simple, yet rugged, application of the concept assures maximum reliability
and availability of the system.

SLURRY SAMPLING

LINEAR SAMPLING
The superior operational benefits of the Labtech Essa electric motor
driven BALL SCREW SAMPLER (as described in our separate data
sheet) are as equally applicable to slurry sampling applications as they
are to the sampling of dry material being discharged from a belt conveyor. The linear action of the ball screw is ideally suited to the primary
or secondary sampling of a slurry being discharged from a launder, weir
or vertical pipe. The inherent design characteristics assure the sample
cutter passes back and forth through the falling slurry stream at genuine constant uniform speed and with maximum operational availability.

The Labtech Essa electric motor driven

ball screw linear sampler is ideally
suited to the primary or secondary
sampling of slurry being discharged
from a launder, weir or vertical pipe.

The Labtech Essa VEZIN rotary sampler

is ideally suited to primary sampling
vertical pipe streams or secondary
application in typical slurry systems

ROTARY SAMPLING
The Labtech Essa VEZIN sampler is a fully enclosed unit containing a
rotating sample cutter that passes at constant speed through the falling
stream of slurry (or free flowing solids) entering it. The VEZIN finds
application in the primary sampling of vertical pipes or as a secondary
unit in typical slurry sampling systems. Correct cutter geometry design
ensures radial cutter edges accurately cut a fixed portion of the stream.
The portion of the stream sampled by the cutter is diverted to the
customers sample collection system while the remainder passes
through for continuous discharge. One, two or four cutters can be fitted
to ensure a representative sample is collected. (Please ask for our
separate data sheet on Vezins).

SUSPENDED SIEVE SHAKER

An electro-mechanical shaker for suspended mounting and
carrying up to six off 450mm diameter standard test sieves.

This unique shaker is specifically designed to be fitted with

up to six off 450mm diameter test sieves of any aperture.
Drive is by a standard 240volt, 50hz, single phase electric
motor to a rotating eccentic mass assembly that causes the
sieves to oscillate in a mainly horizontal plane. The amplitude
of oscillation is adjustable. As a general guide, it can be
expected that relatively coarse aperture sieves will perform
best when the shaker is operating at its greatest amplitude of
oscillation.
It is supplied as standard to process essentially dry materials
but a wet sieving option is available.
The shaker can be suspended from any suitably robust hook.
An optional wheel mounted stand with a manual winch is
available to suspend the sieve stack at a maximum height
equivalent to a 220 litre drum. The sieve stack can be lowered to floor level.

Model OST450 SIEVE SHAKER

For dry sieving with 450mm square or round
The OST450 is a heavy duty, floor mounted oscillating sieve shaker (or table) which was originally
designed to satisfy the requirements of recognised
international standards particularly associated with
the laboratory screen sizing of iron ore. Subsequently it has also been applied in a number of
applications where customers need a heavy duty
laboratory screen to process larger volumes of other
minerals including coal.
The OST450 can be fitted with up to 8 off 450 mm
square perforated plate sieves or up to 10 off 450
mm diameter standard BS or ASTM perforated plate
or wire mesh test sieves of typically 4 to 50 mm
aperture.
The sieve stack on the OST450 is oscillated in a
circular motion in the horizontal plane by a three
phase 1.5kW electric motor driving to a mechanical
unbalanced counterweight system. A positive vertical
component of motion is also imparted to the sieve stack by an electromagnetic vibrator
integrated into the oscillating table to assure optimum screening efficiency.
While the dual drive system of the OST450 results in relatively quiet operation of the unladen
machine, the movement of the material being screened in the sieve stack can create a
degree of noise which will typically require the unit to be located away from operating personnel. When this is not practical then Labtech
Essa can offer an optional extra sound enclosure for the unit.
The OST450 is supplied as standard complete
with a separate IP55 enclosed on/off
control station for customer installation remote
from the unit. An optional extra timer can
be included in this control station.

HANDLING & CLEANING

While Labtech Essa sieves are typically of stainless or plated steel construction that is
inherently more robust, durable and corrosion resistant than traditional brass sieves,
their useable life span can be further increased by following appropriate handling and
cleaning procedures.
It is important to remember a test sieve is a precision measuring instrument that
should be handled & used with care, cleaned (and dried) regularly and safely stored
securely. The carton in which the sieve is delivered has been designed as a storage
container for it and should be used for this purpose.
Particles should not be forced through the apertures of a test sieve. Even the general
practice of brushing material through finer meshes is generally undesirable. When
brushing is virtually unavoidable because of the nature of the material being sieved,
then it should be done as gently as practical to avoid damaging the sieve and to
avoid breakage of the particles.
Sieves should be cleaned after each sizing determination and replaced in their storage container. Any particles caught in the apertures can usually be removed by
inverting the sieve and
gently tapping the
frame. The underside of
the mesh side can
also be stroked gently
with a soft brush.
While air cleaning of
meshes from their
reverse side can also be
successful it should
be avoided because of
the airborne dust
which the method can inherently generate.
Sieves may also be
cleaned by washing
in warm water and an appropriate detergent.
Very fine meshes can
also be wet cleaned
in an ultrasonic bath at
the baths lowest
practical setting and for
the minimum practical time frame. The sieve
should then be rinsed
in clean water then thoroughly and quickly
dried in warm (not hot) air. Sieves used in wet sieving applications should not be
allowed to dry out before being thoroughly cleaned to avoid trapped particles being
baked on.
Common sense must apply in all cases remembering the fundamental requirement is
to subject the sieve to the minimum of physical or mechanical abuse and to keep it
clean and free of any build-up.

WORK STATIONS

Labtech Essa manufacture a range of work benches for general and

specific use in assay and metallurgical laboratories.
They are of fabricated steel and heavy duty sheet metal construction and are of a de-mountable design to minimise shipping volume. All have a 5 mm thick steel bench top which is 900
mm from floor level, 750 mm deep and available in 1200, 1500, 1800, 2000, 2400 and 3000
mm lengths.
WORK STATIONS:
For sample preparation areas. Supplied with a
zinc anneal sheet metal hood (as illustrated)
and a below bench level full length dust duct
along the back edge of the bench top. The
entrance to the duct is covered with a heavy
mesh screen at bench-top level. (Note the mesh
shelf below the bench is an optional extra)
WEIGH BENCHES:
Are essentially the same as a Work Station but
with a solid bench top and vertical extraction
point over the work area.
GENERAL PURPOSE WORK BENCHES:
Are essentially the same as the Work station but
without a hood and with a solid bench top.
OPTIONS FOR ALL BENCHES INCLUDE 5
mm thick rubber bonded to the working surface of the bench top, a heavy duty mesh shelf
below the bench and over the bench lighting.

One only 600 mm deep x 1000 mm nominal

bench top size model is also available with
contoured fibre glass. The contoured shaped
of the hood offers more even air flow throughout the entire inner volume of the hood. The
fibre glass construction offers greater resistance to corrosive attack and has found application in low toxicity applications. The bench
top is of heavy duty steel construction and the
support frame is of de-mountable design to
reduce shipping volume. A dust extraction
connection can be made at the top or back of
the hood.

XRF PRESS AND DIE SETS

Bench mounted electro-hydraulic press for preparing
powder samples for X-Ray fluorescence analysis

Designed with operator safety in

mind. Downward movement of the
hydraulic ram is initiated by two
push buttons, one on each side of
the base of the press unit. These
have to be actuated in unison
thereby requiring both hands of the
operator to be occupied out of
harms way.
Labtech Essa manufacture a bench
mounted, two piece, high pressure,
electro-hydraulic actuated press for
laboratory use in the preparation of
pressed powder samples for X-Ray fluoresence analysis. It is made up as a
press unit and a separate 240 volt, single phase, electro-hydraulic power pack.
The press unit is designed for free standing on the customers bench top with the
separate power pack placed within a 3 metre hose length of the press unit. The
most frequently used location for the power pack is in the bench area beneath
the press unit. These have to be actuated in unison thereby requiring both hands
of the operator to be occupied out of harms way. The unit then moves in to
automatic mode once the press has closed, allowing the unit to run unattended
to complete its cycle automatically. The automatic cycle assures each sample is
subjected to the same pre-set pressure for the same time span....giving optimum
repeatability, automatically.
This adjustable to 40 tonne model is also provided with a see-through
polycarbonate safety door to the pressing area which is interlocked to prevent
the press from operating while the door is open.

Labtech Essa also manufacture die sets to

suit most powder cups and planchettes.
