General
The roofing system design should generally
take into account the following factors:
Geographical location of the building
Degree of exposure (wind etc)
Roof deck/structural support
Pitch (angle of slope)
Intended usage (e.g. roof garden,
walkway etc.)
Roof falls and drainage
Thermal performance (condensation)
Fire performance
Construction fabric (flammable or
fragile etc.)
Perimeter detailing aspects
Roof penetrations (rooflights etc.)
Roof mounted plant and equipment
Building occupancy levels and type of
occupancy (during the works)
Roof access arrangements (during work)
Roof access arrangements (maintenance).
Further information on roof design can be
found on www.ikogroup.co.uk and
experienced IKO technical personnel are
available to give specific project design
advice, Tel: 0844 412 7207.
Design considerations
Roof decks
Structural decks provide the primary support
for the roofing system. They must resist dead,
live and wind loads, including storms. They
must also be suitable for the proposed
membrane roofing system, and the
subsequent use that the roof has been
designed for. Relevant structural and loading
codes for each material must be followed,
and current Building Regulations
requirements checked and observed. If the
use of an existing roof is to be changed (e.g.
retrofit roof garden or pedestrian roof patio
area), the suitability of the deck and the
supporting structure must be confirmed.
The deck may also be laid or fixed so as to
provide a suitable fall for drainage of the roof
surface, as required in BS 6229: 2003, Code
of Practice for flat roofs with continuously
supported coverings. However, roof falls can
also be provided by the addition of tapered
insulation as part of the roofing contract.
Warm Roof: Where the insulation is immediately below the
waterproofing membrane and above the vapour control layer
which is bonded to the supporting deck. This is the most
practical configuration for ensuring the control of
condensation and is usually the recommended option for
insulated roof design.
In a warm roof configuration, a metal lined bituminous
vapour control layer is recommended to achieve the highest
performance standards, and is a requirement over high
humidity environments (e.g. swimming pools). It is essential
that the VCL is properly attached to the substrate and all
side and end laps are fully sealed.
Inverted Roof: Where extruded polystyrene insulation is
placed above the waterproofing layer and loaded with
ballast, paving slabs or roof garden finishes. This is a
satisfactory roof design, particularly where a roof finish will
receive pedestrian or other traffic. However, greater
thickness of insulation is needed to allow for the cooling
affect of water draining beneath insulation, and the
supporting structure must be designed to accommodate the
additional loading required for the insulation.
An inverted roof needs no additional vapour control layer, as
the waterproofing also performs the function of the VCL.
Cold Roof: Where insulation is placed within a ventilated
void space below the roof deck and above the internal
ceiling. This form of roof design is no longer recommended,
as proper void ventilation and an effective vapour control
layer at ceiling level is difficult to achieve. In addition to the
above, other hybrid roofs are sometimes used with insulation
placed both above the deck and within an internal roof void
(below the deck). The use of this type of roof design can
result in serious condensation problems and careful
calculation to balance the insulation thickness above and
below the deck is needed to achieve success. Depending on
the internal humidity conditions, this balance of insulation
can sometimes not be achieved, and under those
circumstances this type of hybrid roof is not recommended.
Composite insulated decking panels are also available but
these must be installed strictly in accordance with the
relevant manufacturers instructions and the use of these
items over high humidity areas will often be restricted.

The Specification of Roofs
The specification and design process is critical
to be sure of long term, good quality roof
protection that meets the requirements of
building regulations. A roof performance is
dependent upon material specification,
correct design detailing and installation by
fully trained operatives, followed up with
regular inspection and maintenance.
Your roof is one of your most valuable assets
and it is therefore important to be confident
that you have made the right choice from the
very start.
IKO take great care in providing services and
products that offer clients and specifiers
effective and positive solutions to meet
guidelines set in CDM regulations
(Construction Design Management), Codes
of Practice set by British Standards, Building
Regulations, including Part L, Government
Guidelines and BREEAM (British Research
Establishment Environmental Assessment
Method).
IKO offer an extensive consultation service
regarding design, specification and material
selection. This service is delivered via a
national team of regional design specialists
and head office based technical services.
The most common types of flat roof
structural deck are:
In-situ concrete decks
Pre-cast concrete decks
Timber-based panels
Plywood decks
Oriented strand board (OSB types 3 or 4
only)
Woodwool decks (no longer manufactured
but may be present on existing structures)
Profiled metal decking
Composite insulated panels.
Roof designers of refurbishment projects
should also still be aware of strawboard
(Stramit) decking, used widely in the 1950s
and 1960s. Strawboard was a combined
decking and insulation material, comprising
compressed straw with brown paper facings.
The product loses all structural integrity if
wetted and removal of bonded membranes
will destroy the upper face, and hence
destroy the structural strength. The only
course of action is to strip and replace
strawboard with a suitable durable timber
panel deck.
In addition to the above, any type of wood
chipboard is unsuitable for flat roofing, and is
not recommended under roofing Codes of
Practice.

REINFORCED BITUMEN MEMBRANE SYSTEMS ENGINEERED FOR A MODERN WORLD 7
Design of falls
It is generally accepted as good practice for
flat roofs to be designed to clear surface
water. Flat roofs should be constructed to a
minimum finished fall of 1 in 80. To achieve
this, the designer needs to adopt a design fall
which will allow for deflections and
inaccuracies in construction. BS 6229; 2003
recommends 1 in 40 as the design fall, to
ensure a finished fall of at least 1 in 80.
An alternative approach is to choose an
intermediate figure of 1 in 60, which is
usually sufficient. The design of falls and
drainage patterns will have a considerable
influence on the depth of the total roof
construction or roof zone, which should be a
fundamental consideration at the very earliest
stages of conception of a building. It is only
after assessing the depth of roof zone that
the designer can decide the levels of all other
aspects of construction above the level of the
flat roof (e.g. wall DPCs, window/door
abutments etc).
Falls may be formed in the structure or can
be created within the roofing system above
the deck. Falls in the structure can be
achieved by adjusting the height of
supporting beams or purlins, by using tapered
supports, or by the addition of firring pieces
before the deck is laid. The latter method is
normally used with decks such as woodwool,
timber, pre-cast concrete and metal decking.
In the case of an in-situ cast concrete slab,
falls are normally provided by using a
separate screed.
Preformed tapered insulation boards also
provide a useful method of forming falls on a
level roof deck. IKO is able to design and
supply suitable tapered insulation systems.
These provide both insulation and falls and
are of particular importance for re-roofing
existing roofs, many of which do not have
sufficient falls and probably do not have
sufficient insulation.
Tapered insulation can provide falls in one
direction to a gutter or level valley, or in two
directions to form falls and cross falls. In
some circumstances it may be deemed
necessary to control the rate of water run-off
from flat roofs and paved areas so as to avoid
overloading ground drainage. Where this is a
requirement, consideration should be given to
using green roofs or roof top gardens where
the horticultural finishes can be used to
absorb rainfall and release it into surface
water drainage more slowly. However, it is
still important to make the correct provision
for adequate drainage, even with garden
roofs, to avoid water-logging the growing
medium or overloading the structure.
Roof drainage
Flat roofs may be drained by two basic
methods: towards the outer edges and into
external gutters, or towards internal gutters
or outlets within the main roof area. Straight
falls to external gutters are simple to form by
sloping the roof deck with firrings, by
screeding or by using tapered insulation
boards. Internal drainage will be achieved by
straight falls to gutters or a pattern of falls
and cross falls to outlets.

Control of condensation/thermal design
When designing a roof the potential for
condensation must always be considered.
Any provision required to control
condensation should be determined as
recommended in BS 6229, 2003 but with the
calculation method modified to conform to
BS 5250, Code of Practice for control of
condensation in buildings.
Suitable thermal insulation should be included
within the system. This layer must have
sufficient insulation value for its underside to
remain above the temperature at which
condensation can start, even in the coldest
design conditions. The provision of insulation
alone, however, may not be sufficient to
prevent condensation. If the insulation is
permeable to water vapour, the vapour will
pass upwards through it and condense on the
underside of the waterproof membrane. To
prevent this occurring, a vapour control layer
should be provided directly below the
insulating layer. The IKO Technical Services
Department can undertake calculations to
ensure the optimum thermal performance of
a roof is achieved.

A typical condensation risk analysis report
IKO can provide bespoke tapered insulation designs
The thermal design of a flat roof can be
categorised as three primary types of
construction, depending on the type and
location of the insulation layer, as opposite.
Insulation
The statutory requirements for the thermal
performance of buildings are set out in the
Building Regulations Part L (2010 Edition).
The new Part L is published in four sections:
L1A: New dwellings
L1B: Existing dwellings
L2A: New buildings other than dwellings
L2B: Work in existing buildings other than
dwellings.
IKO supply a comprehensive range of totally
CFC/HCFC free rigid thermal insulation
boards suitable for use with IKO flat roofing
systems. IKO insulation materials come in a
range of uniform thickness or in tapered
form, to suit individual circumstances and U-
value requirements (see page 22).

Health and Safety
Health and Safety data sheets relating to all
IKO materials are available from the Technical
Services Department on 0844 412 7207 or as
a download from www.ikogroup.co.uk.
Routine maintenance
As with all roofing systems, proper
maintenance is essential to obtain maximum
performance and ensure the longest life
expectancy for the system as a whole. It is
also an integral part of all manufacturers
guarantees. Any deficiencies should be
reported immediately to IKO.
Access to the roof must only be allowed by
arrangement with and under supervision of
the Building Manager or the person
responsible for building maintenance, in
accordance with the Construction (Design &
Management) Regulations 2007.
All personnel given permission to access the
roof must be fully advised of the health and
safety procedures required by the site or that
of the individual roof concerned. The client or
building owner is responsible for providing
safe access to and from the roof, and for
suitable edge protection or fall arrest systems.
Routine inspections
Regardless of the manufacturer concerned, all
flat roofs should be inspected twice yearly,
preferably in the spring and autumn, and/or
after extremes of weather conditions.
Inspections should be carried out generally in
accordance with BS 6229: 2003, with
particular attention to the following items:
It is important to check that roof outlets are
functioning and gratings are not blocked.
Remove debris from the roof but do not
flush silt or dead leaves down outlets. In
areas where taller trees are adjacent to the
roof, inspections may be required more
frequently
Note the general condition of the
membrane finishes and report any signs of
creasing/blistering, de-bonded laps or
damaged areas immediately
Check perimeter details and upstands,
ensuring that metal cappings, flashings,
edge trims and mortar pointing to chase
details are secure
Check waterproofing to rooflight kerbs
Check rooflight domes for signs of damage
or deflection
Check flashings to expansion joints and that
cappings are secure
Check upstand flashings to plant support
legs/upstands
Check upstands and flashings to pipe
penetrations
Examine all mastic seals and repair/replace
as necessary
Check walkways and around access points
to ensure damage/displacement has not
occurred to walkway or concrete paving.
Repair work
Roofs which are under guarantee by IKO
should only be repaired by the installing
contractor, with full design reference to IKO
Technical Services Department.
Where the roof is not covered by a
guarantee, Clause 10.3 of BS 8217: 2005,
Repair procedures should be applied.

Ultra prevENt and Goldseal
Certificate No. 91/2671
Mach One
Certificate No. 00/3760
Certificate No. 626a
What is prevENt graphite technology?
How it is made
The upper surface of the membrane base
carrier (excluding the overlap area) is coated
with expandable graphite crystals (this
accounts for only 1% of the total weight of
the membrane and does not affect the
waterproofing capability of the membrane
construction). All types and weights of
polyester base fabric, including all prevENt
capsheets can be provided with this fire
resistant technology.
How it works
Expandable graphite is naturally occurring; it
is very environmentally friendly, it is insoluble
in water, and it functions as a flame retardant
by endothermic combustion reaction when in
contact with heat. In a fire the graphite
expands, drawing heat out of the combustion
process and creating a heat-insulating layer
after expansion. The typical intumescent
effect forms a barrier against flames and
stops the dripping of the coating from the
underside of the roofing, and also acts as an
effective smoke suppressant.
IKOs Ultra prevENt systems utilise graphite technology, which
provides the highest fire performance without affecting the primary
waterproofing function or life expectancy of the membranes.

REINFORCED BITUMEN MEMBRANE SYSTEMS ENGINEERED FOR A MODERN WORLD 13
The specifier, installing contractor and
building owner can be assured of the
best all round waterproofing and fire
performance protection.
Features and benefits
Very low smoke production
Smoke effects cause more casualties than the
effects of the fire itself. The expandable
graphite functions as a very efficient built-in
smoke suppressant, with better results than
any other known bituminous fire-retardant
system.
No toxic gas release
Carbon monoxide is a major toxic element in
smoke development. In the event of fire,
prevENt membranes produce a very low
percentage of carbon monoxide.
Halogen-free technology
prevENt fire performance technology is also
halogen-free, therefore no toxic fumes from
halogenated compounds are produced during
application or in the event of a fire. This
performance provides significant advantages
over synthetic membranes, which rely on
toxic halogenated compounds to achieve any
fire performance characteristics.
Reduces the dripping of the burning coating
The intumescent effect of the expandable
graphite reduces the dripping of molten
bituminous coating along the membrane.
Reduces heat release
The less heat that is released, the less the
chance of a fast spreading fire, and the more
time available for evacuation. prevENt
membranes act as a very efficient fire
retardant. The rate of heat release is half that
of a standard polyester membrane and it has
considerably better results than all known
alternative fire retardant systems.
Maintains primary waterproofing function
The waterproofing integrity and life
expectancy of the roofing membranes remain
completely unaffected as the polyester bases
and coatings remain completely unaltered in
fire-resistant form.
Highest UK and European testing standards
prevENt membranes have been tested to the
most stringent European standards, and have
achieved the highest performance ratings in
all sections of fire tests EN 1187: 1, 2, 3 and
4 (BS 476: Part 3: 2004).
Optimum safety in the event of fire,
for man and the environment
prevENt membranes are not just another
solution designed to meet the standards of
fire test resistance. The prevENt range is
above all a safe concept which significantly
improves the safety of people during the
evacuation of a building in the event of a fire,
without releasing harmful smoke or toxic
fumes into the environment.
High performance and fire safety as standard
All IKO prevENt membranes (including Mach
One) incorporate graphite technology, meet
LPCB requirements, yet still offer the highest
level of waterproofing and life expectancy
performance.

Guardian
IKOs Guardian system has evolved to offer
the ultimate combination of proven products,
speed of application and safe installation
practices on site. The system effectively
combines the use of a quality self-adhesive
underlay, high performance PIR insulation,
and the proven performance of either a
torch-on or pour and roll Ultra prevENt cap
sheet.
Torch-on systems
Ultra prevENt T-O membranes are applied by
torch or hot air application. They offer simple,
rapid application and are installed by skilled,
trained operatives. Torch-on membranes
provide a simplified detailing option and can
therefore be used to compliment a variety of
other systems. As the bonding bitumen forms
part of the core membrane itself, torch-on
systems provide additional certainty of
completely homogenous modified bitumen
throughout.
Pour and roll systems
Ultra prevENt Pour and Roll membranes are
applied by pouring and rolling in hot bitumen
or specialist cold adhesives. This traditional
method of application provides a tried and
trusted waterproofing solution, with both
partially and fully bonded systems available.
Pour and roll systems also offer additional
peace of mind, as secure bonding is achieved
through the use of a separate cold or hot
applied adhesive.

Quadra systems utilise modern bitumen technology in an innovative
concept. They offer an ideal cost-effective overlay system for
existing bituminous roofing membranes and can be used in either a
one or two-layer system. Quadra membranes feature a diamond
shaped coating on the underside of the membrane which is applied
using heat activation, and subsequently permits the membrane to
act as a vapour diffusion layer. This results in a bonding area to the
substrate of approximately 40%, providing good bond strength and
reducing the effect of blistering caused by trapped moisture.
System benefits
Systems fully applied by torching
No bitumen boilers or cold adhesives
required on site
Rapid installation up to 25% faster than
traditional application
Energy efficient uses less gas
Diamond vapour diffusion system prevents
blistering by trapped moisture
Excellent adhesion to substrate.
System options
Quadra can be used in single layer overlay
situations, using Quadra prevENt T-O. This is
an APP modified partial bond cap sheet with
built-in prevENt graphite technology for
added fire protection. The underside of the
roofing membrane is printed with a
thermofusible film, and the top surface is
finished with an attractive dark grey mineral
slate. Alternatively, a two-layer system can be
specified, utilising Quadra Rock T-O partial
bond underlay, followed by a fully bonded
cap sheet of choice.
Complementary Systems Membranes:

Meeting the challenge: environmentally friendly waterproofing performance
Modern reinforced bituminous membranes not only provide
outstanding waterproofing, but they offer exceptional green
credentials that help meet the demands of modern construction.
Kind to nature
Bitumen is a hydrocarbon a naturally
occurring store of carbon that is insoluble
and hence a natural waterproofing medium
Many modern membranes contain a range
of recycled products, including plastic
bottles, glass and cardboard
Bituminous membranes help protect the
insulation, thus reducing energy loss
through the life cycle of the building
Low maintenance costs BS8747 gives a
design life in excess of 50 years
At the end of their service life, bitumen
membranes can be recycled into bulk or
sheet bituminous products
Systems incorporating reinforced bitumen
membranes achieve an A+ rating in the
BRE Green Guide to Specification.
Kind to people
Bituminous membranes do not generate
any particular smell during use
Bitumen is not classified as carcinogenic
and, at ambient temperatures, bitumen
does not release any volatile organic
compounds or harmful toxins
Bituminous systems are chemically stable
and do not release any noxious fumes
while being installed.

At one with nature
Innovative green roof options
There is no doubt that the development of urban areas, especially high rise
buildings in major cities, has had a detrimental effect on the environment.
Reducing the natural airflow, it also adds to dirt and pollution, higher
temperatures and lower humidity levels.
The innovation of green roofs is beginning to make a real positive
difference, improving air quality during the natural process of
photosynthesis and absorbing airborne pollutants through the leaves of
plants. They also add to the aesthetic quality of the environment, help
improve acoustic and thermal performance, and control the water run-off
into surface water drainage.
Many specifiers and building owners are
therefore turning to green roof systems, and
the numerous environmental benefits that
they offer. IKOs Permatorch Anti-Root is a
specialist root-resistant membrane which
forms the ideal waterproofing foundation on
which a green roof can flourish. In addition
IKOgreen extensive, intensive and biodiverse
green roof systems feature a range of
drainage and filter layer options, offered with
a package of growing medium, planting
schemes and accessories to cover a wide
range of roofs. They have an established
track record, not only in the UK but also
across Europe, and can be designed
specifically to meet the individual
requirements of the project.
Extensive Green Roofs
Extensive green roofs are constructed using
low maintenance planting, without the need
for specific irrigation. Sedums (succulents)
and indigenous herbs and grasses provide
excellent cover and protection to the
waterproofing system. They do not provide
usable space or a surface that can be
trafficked, but add instantly to the aesthetics,
improve the local air quality and help to
control rainwater run-off into surface water
drainage systems. In addition, a correctly
designed system upgrades the acoustic and
thermal performance of roof finishes.
Intensive Roof Gardens
With intensive roof gardens, the landscape
variations are practically limitless, and it is
feasible to create an environment at roof level
similar to that of any designed garden.
An increased quantity of growing medium,
improved drainage layers and irrigation
systems are generally required to support the
greater diversity of planting. Shrubs and trees
can easily be accommodated, and there is
little to restrict scope for design other than
the overall weight of the system and the cost
of its supporting construction.
Biodiverse Brown Roofs
Biodiversity roofs are another form of
extensive green roof (i.e. low maintenance)
that makes use of recycled materials (e.g.
crushed brick, crushed concrete etc.) in the
growing medium. This type of green roof is
intended to create a natural wasteland and
can be seeded initially with selected species
to create some growth. However the basic
design is to attract fauna and flora of all
kinds. As the growing medium is not of high
nutritional value, larger plants are not likely to
survive and will die off creating further
suitable habitat for invertebrates which in
turn will attract other fauna.

REINFORCED BITUMEN MEMBRANE SYSTEMS ENGINEERED FOR A MODERN WORLD 31
Air care technology
Ecological roofing membrane with white mineral finish
IKO Carrara is an innovative, ecological roofing membrane, combining all
known technologies for the improvement of the environment.
The mineral finishing of IKO Carrara is coated with a special type of titanium
dioxide (TiO2). Under the influence of UV rays, the membrane acts as a
catalyst and converts nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides (NOx and SOx),
which are contributory factors in the acidification of the environment and
the greenhouse effect, into harmless and environmentally-neutral substances.
This IKO Air Care Technology results in a contribution to the reduction of
the extremely damaging, so-called secondary particle matter in the air.
Air-purifying
Air-purifying effect through the conversion
of NOx (nitrogen oxide) and SOx (sulphur
oxide) into harmless environmentally-neutral
substances.
Cool roof building
The top coating of IKO Carrara consists of a
highly reflective white, mineral finish. The
membranes high emissivity efficiently radiates
the absorbed heat through infrared radiation,
ensuring that less active cooling is required
within the building. This results in less energy-
consumption and therefore a reduction in the
carbon footprint of the building.
The white mineral finish not only provides
UV protection for the roof membrane, it also
reduces the surface temperature by more than
30C. This leads to far fewer thermal shocks,
increasing the expected service-life by at least
5 years.
The Urban Heat Island Effect (a blanket of
hot air above our cities) can be significantly
reduced by using the membrane, resulting in a
more pleasant urban environment.
Recycled raw materials
A substantial proportion of the bituminous
coating of the IKO Carrara roofing membrane
consists of recycled raw materials, including
regenerated bitumen from old roof coverings
and obsolete stock. The high quality
reinforcing carrier is also manufactured using
recycled polymers.
100% green energy
The production of IKO Carrera is powered
by 100% green energy. The consumption of
fossil fuels is therefore reduced, again resulting
in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.
Proven quality and durability
IKO Carrara is a roofing membrane with a
proven durability of +30 years. (Source BDA:
rapport08-B-0035)
The membrane incorporates a high-quality
tri-laminate polyester composite
reinforcement, offering extremely high
mechanical values. The reinforced carrier also
provides exceptional dimensional stability and
resistance to delamination.
IKO Carrara includes IKOs patented Turbo
profiling for fast and secure installation.
Resistant to the incipient spread of fire
IKO Carrera features built-in prevENt
technology, providing outstanding fire-
resistance through natural, expandable
graphite crystals that are applied to the carrier
during the production.

Our Consultation provides
the complete picture
We start by listening to you,
your requirements and your
brief for the project you would
like us to take on. Then, well
discuss the finer details with
you so that every aspect of
your new or replacement
roofing system has been
covered.
Among other things, well look at:
Your building use: Is it a residential
project, a public building or a works

Performance: Are you expecting your
roof to keep in noise as well as keep out
water?
Are there thermal insulation
requirements above and beyond those
set in the regulations?
Budgets: What are you expecting to
achieve within your given funds?
Guarantee requirements: We offer a
range of service contracts and
guarantees. Which will suit you best?

The above investigation work will usually
ensure we have the knowledge we need to
give you the best advice.
However, in more challenging circumstances,
we can employ the latest Roofscan Infra-red
imaging technology to confirm our findings
or reveal a more detailed and complete
picture of the existing roof build-up. This
allows us to measure accurately the extent of
any water ingress and make a more informed
judgement on which areas must be stripped
and which can be overlaid; providing more
accurate information for planning and
budgeting.

bespoke Design
thats always a perfect fit
Now we can compile a full set of bespoke specifications for the job, taking into account
everything our discussions and surveys have told us:
Technical calculation service.
This service allows the assessment of thermal performance and condensation risk within the
roof build-up. In addition, calculation can assess the potential effect of wind uplift on the roof,
allowing us to design the specification accordingly. We can also calculate the weight load of
the specified system, to allow structural advice to be sought, where appropriate.
Building Regulations compliance
Our recommendations can include all current and anticipated requirements for drainage,
thermal, fire and acoustic performance.
Tapered insulation schemes
We can design insulation which is tapered to create the falls required for drainage and comply
with overall thermal performance requirements.
Accessories and access planning
Full specifications for rooflights, outlets, handrail systems and trim positioning will be prepared
as will plans for maintenance walkways or escape routes.
CAD site plans
General layout plans for the roof can be provided, supported by detail drawings of perimeter
abutments and roof penetration points.
Photovoltaics and green roof design
Our in-house experts can also advise on specification design criteria relating to photovoltaic
energy roofs and roof garden systems.
