You may use a soft pencil for any diagram or graph.
Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid.

Answer all the questions.
Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles
in degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.
You are expected to use a graphic calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are required to
present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator commands.

4 (a) The diagrams below show the graphs of |f ( )| y x = and f '( ) y x = .

Sketch the graph of f ( ) y x = , stating the equations of any asymptotes and the coordinates of any
axial intercepts and turning points. [3]

Hence, find the range of values of k if there is exactly 1 real root to the equation f ( ) 0 x k = . [2]

(b) The diagram below shows the graph of f (2 1) y x = . The curve passes through the point
A(1, 0) and B(1, 1 ). The asymptotes are x =0 and y =0 and 3 y = .

Section B : Statistics [60 marks]

5 A junior college has a student population of 1800. The Student Council wants to take a survey of
the opinions of students on the quality of food in the canteen. Describe how a quota sample of size
200 might be obtained.
The teacher advisor feels that the data collected might be biased and proposes to choose the sample
of size 200 using systematic sampling. Explain how this could be carried out. [4]

6 In each of the following cases, find the number of ways of forming a group of 10 people from 15
couples if each group contains
(i) exactly 5 couples, [1]
(ii) no couples, [2]
(iii) exactly 2 couples. [3]

7 A manufacturer claims that the mass of buns, on average, is at least 80g. A random sample of 20
buns is taken and the mass, x g, of each bun is determined. It is found that
( 80) 18.7 x =

,
2
( 80) 102.5 x =

.

(i) Test whether the manufacturers claim is justified at the 5% level of significance.
You should state any assumption that you made when carrying out your test. [6]
(ii) Suppose now that the population variance is 10 g
2
and the assumption made in part (i) is
still valid, determine the range of values of the mean mass, x g, of another random sample of
20 buns which will lead to the rejection of the null hypothesis at the 5% level of significance.

8 In a particular chemical reaction, the amount of unused chemical, x (in grams), varies with time, t
(in minutes), as shown in the following table.

t (minute) 0.20 0.35 0.46 0.74 1.00
x (grams) 3.22 2.01 1.43 0.64 0.36

It is given that the value of the product moment correlation coefficient for this data is 0.937 ,
correct to 3 decimal places.
(i) Draw a scatter diagram to illustrate the data and comment on the suitability of the linear
model. [3]

The variable y is defined by y =ln x. For the variables y and t,
(ii) calculate the product moment correlation coefficient and comment on its value. [2]
(iii) use a regression line to give an estimate of t when x =0.5. Explain your choice of the
regression line used. [3]

9 Players A and B compete in a racquet match consisting of at most 3 sets. Each set is won by either
Player A or B, and the match is won by the first person to win two sets. Player A has a probability
of
2
3
of winning each of the first two sets. If the match goes into the third set, Player A has a
probability of p of winning this set.

(i) With the aid of a tree diagram, find in terms of p, the probability that player A will win the
match. [3]
(ii) Deduce the range of values of the probability that player A wins the match. [2]
(iii) Show that the value of p in order for the match to be fair is
1
8
. [1]
(iv) Given that Player A wins the match, find the probability that he won the second set. [3]

10 A fruit stall at a local market sells kiwis and avocados. The mass of a randomly chosen kiwi and an
avocado may be assumed to be independent and normally distributed with means 82g and 115g
and standard deviations o g and 9g respectively.
(i) Ken randomly chooses three avocados. Find the probability that one of the avocados has
mass between 110g and 115g, while the other two each has mass more than 115g. [3]
(ii) The probability that a randomly chosen kiwi has mass more than 0.09 kg is 0.1055.
Show that the value of o is 6.40, correct to 3 significant figures. [2]
(iii) Find the probability that the average mass of 2 kiwis and 3 avocados exceed 100g. [2]

The fruit stall sells kiwis at $12 per kg and avocados at $15 per kg.

(iv) Ken has $a. Calculate the least value of a (to the nearest integer) such that the probability
that Ken has sufficient money to pay for 2 kiwis and 3 avocados is at least 0.99. [3]

11 During an 8-hour workday, the telephone switchboard at Global Enterprise receives an average of
1 prank call per hour. State a condition under which a Poisson distribution would be a suitable
probability model for the number of prank calls received. [1]

Assume that the number of prank calls received follow a Poisson distribution.
(i) Find the probability that there will be at most 5 prank calls in a workday. [2]
(ii) The probability that there will be at least two workdays in n workdays with at most 5 prank
calls in a workday is more than 0.755. Find the least value of n. [3]
(iii) Find the probability that there will be an average of more than 1.2 prank calls in an hour over
ten 8-hour workdays. [3]
(iv) Global Enterprise will make a police report if there are at least 4 consecutive workdays in a
week during which more than 5 prank calls are received in a day. Assuming the company
operates from Monday to Friday only, show that the probability that a police report is made in
a particular week is 0.510, correct to 3 significant figures. [2]
(v) The probability that a police report is made on at least k weeks in the year is more than 0.204.
By using a suitable approximation, find the largest integer value of k. [4]
[Assume that there are 52 weeks in a year.]
