Ren Descartes developed a system to identify a location using perpendicular lines and numbers only. It is called the Cartesian Plane in honor of him. It is also known as a Coordinate Grid or Coordinate Plane.

This part of the Cartesian Plane is known as the First Quadrant.

The point where the object is located is described by a pair of numbers called an ordered pair. The order of the number pair is such that the first number always describes the position relative to the horizontal line, known as the x-axis. The second number describes the position relative to the vertical line, known as the y-axis. How to plot ordered pairs: Step 1. Always find the x value first, moving horizontally right . Step 2. Starting from your new position, find the y value by moving vertically up. How to find ordered pairs: Step 1. Find how far over horizontally the point is by counting to the right . Step 2. Count how far vertically the point is by counting up. Step 3. Write the ordered pair in parentheses, x first, y second. (x,y) Hint: x comes before y in the alphabet.

The point where the horizontal and vertical axes meet is called the origin.

Directions: Students alternate writing down an ordered pair on a piece of paper which they plot using a point. The partner whose point encloses a 1 by 1 square connects the points of the square and captures the square by initialing it. The partner with the most captured squares wins. Play can continue until all of the grid is filled in or until a predetermined time limit is up.

4) Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzle pieces. A tangram puzzle consists of 7 geometric shapes. Use the following coordinates to create your own tangram puzzle set. Copy this page. Cut out the pieces and see how many shapes you can create.

Activity 2

Create a shape with line segments on a coordinate grid. Make sure that the points or corners of your shape are at the points where the horizontal lines of the x-axis and vertical line of the y-axis cross (the intersections). List the coordinates of the corners of your shape on a blank piece of paper. Give your partner your coordinates to see if your partner can recreate the shape.
