Discuss with your partner a way to describe the position of the fly on the ceiling tile.
Location
Position
Did it make a difference whether the position was identified by the letter first or the number first? What might make the locations easier to find? What are the similarities and differences between the map of Texas and the grid Rene Descartes examined?
Ren Descartes developed a system to identify a location using perpendicular lines and numbers only. It is called the Cartesian Plane in honor of him. It is also known as a Coordinate Grid or Coordinate Plane.
The point where the horizontal and vertical axes meet is called the origin.
2)
Graph the following coordinates: (2,2), (4,2), (4,4), (3,5), (2,4), (2,2) Connect the points in the order given.
10
a) Mark points at the following coordinates: (0,0), (0,4), (1,1), (1,3), (2,0), (3,1), (2,2), (4,2), (3,3), (4,4) b) Connect the following points with a line segment. (0,0) and (4,4) (0,4) and (3,1) (1,1) and (3,1) (2,0) and (4,2) (4,2) and (3,3)

Create a shape with line segments on a coordinate grid. Make sure that the points or corners of your shape are at the points where the horizontal lines of the x-axis and vertical line of the y-axis cross (the intersections). List the coordinates of the corners of your shape on a blank piece of paper. Give your partner your coordinates to see if your partner can recreate the shape.
