The Cherokee Indians were one of the largest of five Native American tribes who settled in the American southeast portion of the country. They were called Cherokee because it meant principal people The Cherokee tribe is still around today! Most of the Cherokee live in Oklahoma. The Cherokee lived in cabins made of logs instead of the typical tee pees. They were a strong tribe with several smaller sections, all lead by chiefs. The tribe was highly religious and spiritual. When the American Revolution took place, the Cherokee Indians supported the British soldiers, and even went with them in battle by taking part in several attacks. The creek and Choctaw tribes also assisted in the battles on the British side. Around the 1800s, The Cherokee Indians began to adopt the culture that the white man brought to them. They began to dress more European, and even adopted many of their farming and building methods. In 1828, gold was discovered on the Cherokees land. This started the overtaking of their homes, and they were forced out. They had been settled in Georgia for many years, but were now being made to leave and find a new place to settle. This is the origin for the historically popular trail of tears, were men, women, and children had to pack up their belongings and find new homes. Marching a span of thousands of miles. When all was said and done, About 4,000 Cherokee lost their lives on the journey. Today, the Cherokee Indians have a

strong sense of pride in their heritage. The Cherokee rose is now the state of flower of Georgia. The largest populations of Cherokee Indians live in the state of Oklahoma. The Cherokee language has a different writing system that was invented by the Cherokee scholar Sequoyah. Sequoyas writing system is a syllabary, which means one character represents each syllable. The Cherokee alphabet is a syllabary of 84 characters in which each letter in a word stands for a whole syllable. There are six vowels: a-e-i-o-u including a vowel that does not exist in English (V). The (V) vowel is pronounced like the u in huh. The Cherokees were farming people. Cherokee women harvested crops of corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers. They also gathered berries, nuts and fruit to eat. Cherokee men hunted deer, wild turkeys, small game and finished in the river. Cherokee foods included cornbread, soups, and stews cooked on stone hearths. . The men fished and hunted. They hunted mostly bear, turkey, and rabbit with blow guns. The Cherokee used poison to stun the fish and then they just picked the biggest one out of the water. Cherokee children lives a normal way. They went to school and helped around the house. Many Cherokee children enjoyed hunting and fishing with their fathers, in the past, Cherokee kids had more chores and less time to play, just like colonial children. But they did have toys, dolls and games to play. In one popular game Cherokee kids tried to throw a dart through a moving hoop. Anejodi, a stickball game related to the Iroquois game of lacrosse , was a popular sport Cherokee teenagers and adult men. The Cherokee tribe will always live their lifestyle just
