Bsi Tricks

The document provides instructions for configuring several Windows 95 settings to improve audio performance and reduce hiccups when using WaveStation audio software. It recommends adjusting settings like disabling read ahead optimization, write behind caching, modifying virtual memory and swapfile sizes, and disabling certain visual effects. It also provides tips for drivers and bypassing ScanDisk on Windows 95 OSR2 startup.

In SYSTEM.

INI, after the [386ENH] section, add one for

[VCACHE]. In it, enter MaxFileCache=xxxx where xxxx is
the number of kilobytes. A suggested setting is 4096.
This keeps VCACHE from growing beyond that point.
There is also a MinFileCache that can be set.

One fix for having hiccup's in your audio is to go to

Control Panel/System/Performance/File System/Read
Ahead optimization OFF (move slider all the way to the
left). Select something different on the same screen (File
System) where it says "typical role of this computer"
choosing Mobile or Docking System instead of Desktop
Computer might give a little less virtual memory activity.

Disable write behind caching by going to the Control

Panel/System/Performance/File System/Troubleshooting
and click on disable write behind caching for all drives.

Modify the Virtual Memory SwapFile size by going to the

Control Panel/System/System
Properties/Performance/Virtual memory and set the max
and min to the same value to prevent repeated resizing
of the swapfile. 32MB is a good value for a 32MB RAM
system (64 if you have 64MB RAM, etc.)

Modify the Hardware Acceleration for Graphics by going

to the Control Panel/System/System
Properties/Performance/Graphics section and moving
the slider from "Full" to "None".

Disable the following two Visual Effects options by going

to the Control Panel/Display/Effects tab. 1) Show window
contents while dragging and 2) Animate windows, menus
and lists. These options can have adverse effects on
WaveStation's display performance.

If you have a hard disk controller card that requires a

driver to work try the following. Click Start and choose
'Shut Down' and then 'Restart the computer in MS-DOS
mode'. At the dos prompt load the driver into " DOS
ONLY ".

"DON'T USE ON-TRACK DISK MANAGER" it is not

compatible with Win95.

Force disable on double-buffered drive access. From the

DOS prompt C:\ type ATTRIB -H -R -S MSDOS.SYS and
Edit the c:\msdos.sys file and make sure the
DoubleBuffer=0. Then save changes and type ATTRIB
+H +R +S MSDOS.SYS.

Conclusion

BSI will continue to investigate the performance issues of using

WaveStation, WaveCart and STINGER under Windows 95/98
and will update this document to reflect any new or additional
information.

Bypass Scandisk in Win 95 OSR2

Courtesy of PC Magazine (Ziff-Davis Inc.)

Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) is filled with

improvements, but it also contains one major annoyance.
When you restart OSR2 after an abnormal exit, Windows
insists on running ScanDisk. To bypass the ScanDisk ordeal,
use Windows Explorer to remove the read-only attribute from
C:\Msdos.sys. Then use Notepad to add the line
AUTOSCAN=2 to the [Options] section. Don't forget to reset
the read-only attribute after saving the file!

WaveStation "double skips"

Program Logs

Courtesy of BSI Technical Support

If WaveStation appears to "skip" program logs when loading

the next day's log... you're probably using time events to chain
your logs. This is a recipe for disaster.

The reason is easy to see if you think about how time events
work and the relative speed of computers versus humans.
Let's say you have a time event set to load the next day's log at
59:59:50. At that time, WaveStation will load the next day's log.
That process takes about 1/2 of a second. That means the
time is now... 59:59:50 + 1/2 of a second... but the clock still
reads 59:59:50 If the new log also has a time event to load the
next log at 59:59:50 that event will be activated and load the
next log. As you can see, if you've got a very fast computer and
are using short logs that load quickly... you might be able to
accidentally chain 3 or 4 logs in a second.

Fortunately, the problem is easy to fix. Just have your next

day's log load via the "+" autstep cue at the end of the last
break of the current log. This way, you won't be dependent
upon time events and you'll avoid "log skips."
