BACKGROUND
This book drive initiative is an attempt to make a modest contribution in support of education in St. John Elementary School. Kuya Fish Campaign had their first project in this school last March wherein Japanese Volunteers from Ricoppine constructed a toilet for the preschool. From then, Kuya Fish Campaign continues in providing assistance to the school. When they asked the Principal if they have library, he said they dont have right now. They had problems in gathering books for children. The students in the school are mostly displaced Badjaos. The Badjaos of Tobacco St., Puntod is one of the many diverse ethnic groups in Mindanao. They originated from Basilan where they lived near coastal areas as they rely mostly on the sea. Forced out of their hometown by rebel forces, the Badjaos sought refuge in one of the developing cities of Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro City. In the busy streets of Cagayan de Oro, they thrive to sustain their families by begging for money or spare change-making themselves pitiful and lowly to most people. Children from these families do not see education or literacy of much value as they have learned to make use of their time and effort on things that can generate instant cash for them. The Badjaos are well known to be expert sea-divers, thus, another means of livelihood is taken from pearls diving. The pearls are made into accessories, house decorations and other crafts that are skillfully made by their hands. As observed, most Badjaos use improvised drums to produce music and attract attention that would serve as their mini performance in the streets. They use this performance to gather money from begging and pleading.
OBJECTIVES OF THE Tambol sa Kaugmaon PROJECT: The objective is to collect recent books (new or used books in good condition) which include text books of major subjects (mathematics, English, Science) Children Story Books, and other forms of scholastic material that can be used by Primary and Elementary students. We are collecting books and material that can be used in primary and elementary schools. Our target is to gather enough books to fill 5 book shelves, we are targeting to collect these books from various sources in the City, hopefully abroad and from individuals who are willing to donate books that they dont need. We hope to effect a change in the perception of the people when it comes to the Badjaos. Instead of working on drums, we would like for these children to work on reading scholarly books and for them to work on achieving a brighter future for themselves. We would like for them to value education as a very important factor for them to be successful in the world, and we would want for them to influence other children to read and study. We named the project as such because we believe that the knowledge the children will learn through the books in their library will serve as sound waves of wisdom that they will carry for the rest of their lives, and for posterity.
COLLECTION AND STORAGE The books will be collected by volunteers from Kuya Fish Campaign. The KFC Tambol sa Kaugmaon Team is in the process of identifying a main storage facility in a location that will facilitate collection and shipping. DISTRIBUTION OF THE BOOKS A team of volunteers from Kuya Fish Campaign will facilitate the turn-over of books at St. John Elementary School this coming May 25, 2013. The Book Drive will still continue even after the formal turn-over. We will still accept books for the School.
