Prescribed Burn Planned for South Rim of Aravaipa Canyon


Safford, Ariz. - The Bureau of Land Managements (BLM) Safford Field Office and Gila District Fire Management Office are planning to conduct a prescribed burn on the south rim of Aravaipa Canyon sometime between May15 and June 30 when weather conditions permit. The Grover Burn will be approximately 2,428 acres in the area east of Turkey Creek, south and west of Aravaipa Canyon on BLM public lands outside the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. Fire is a natural process that maintains the grassland communities of the Aravaipa Canyon area. Prescribed fire is a process designed to reintroduce fire into the ecosystem in a manner that mimics natural fire frequency and intensity. By reintroducing fire, the BLM hopes to increase the health of the ecosystem by enhancing growth of desirable grasses, reducing invasive shrub species and managing fuel loads so that natural fires are less destructive. Prescribed fire treatments are part of a BLM effort to restore, enhance, and, maintain the native desert grassland ecosystem found on the uplands of Aravaipa Canyon. Restoring the native grassland will improve wildlife habitat, increase watershed function, and preserve a valuable ecosystem found within the desert Southwest. Various Federal, State, and local cooperators will assist the BLM in conducting the burn. Fire crews monitor the burned area during and after all prescribed burns. The BLM manages more land 245 million acres than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLMs multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
