The Salt River Fire Department is recommending a complete restriction on open fires, chain saw use, internal combustion engines without spark arrestors, and smoking in the Red Mountain area due to drought conditions and above normal potential for wildland fires. This recommendation is based on the need to protect cultural resources and due to the extreme fire danger from current weather conditions. The fire department will publicize the restriction if approved but access for community members will not be restricted, though a complete closure may be necessary if conditions worsen or persist.

10005 East Osborn Road" Scottsdale, Arizona 85256 PHONE 480.850.8239 FAX 480.850.8231 Salt River Fire Depamnent Memorandum TO: SRP-MIC Administration FROM: Salt River Fire Department DATE: May 15,2013 SUBJECT: Restrictions on Open Fires in Red Mountain Area The National Wildland Significant Fire Potential Outlook has predicted an above normal significant fire potential across Arizona. The main factor influencing this prediction is the extended dry period with an outlook of warmer and drier than normal weather which points to drought conditions and above normal potential for wildland fires. The rainfall earlier in the year has produced substantial amounts of dry fuels in this area. The Salt River Fire Department recommends a complete restriction on any open fires, use of chain saws, use of internal combustion engines without spark arrestors, and smoking within the Red Mountain area until further notice. Gas stoves would be permitted. This recommendation is based upon the need to protect the cultural resources of the Community and the extreme fire danger impacted by the current weather conditions. The International Fire Code prohibits open burning when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous. The Fire Department realizes the cultural significance and the need for Community members to access the Red Mountain area and this recommendation will not restrict access for Community members. However, if conditions worsen or persist for a length of time, it may be necessary for a complete closure of the area. If approved, the Salt River Fire Department will publicize the restriction utilizing the SRPMIC Intranet, Digital Signage, AuAuthm News as wen as posting notices in cooperation with the SRPD Rangers. Approved by SR Date: May 15, 2013 Mar in Harvier, Vice President
