Conflict means disagreement, clash, difference of opinion and variance.

It can occur at the individual, interpersonal, group and organizational levels. If conflicts create difficulties in management and the working of organizations and groups, it is called Dysfunctional conflict. While if conflicts helps in the progress of management and the working of organizations and groups, then it is called Functional conflict. Till now you have seen different roles in the organisation a person may have such as Director, Manager, supervisor, etc. Along with these a person may be member of any association in the same organisation. These are the organisational roles along with these roles a person may have an individual role like a father/mother, husband/wife, son/daughter, member of any sport event, etc. When an individual simultaneously playing different roles having different expectations, the results is role conflict, it exist when an individual finds that compliance with one role requirement may make it difficult to comply with another, at the extreme it would include situations in which two or more role expectations are mutually contradictory. It is common for the adult middle class male & female to be simultaneously playing both organisational roles and individual roles. Most of the organisation roles carry conflicting demands and expectation. Such conflict can have negative impact on well being and performance of a person. There are three major types of role conflict. One type is the conflict between the person and the role. There may be conflict between the persons personality and the expectations of the role. For example, an introvert, who is fond of studying and writing rather than socialising may find conflicting if he or she accepts the role of a salesperson in an organisation, and comes to realise that the expectations from the role would include his or her meeting people and being social. A second type is intra role conflict created by contradictory expectations about how a given role should be played. Should the new team leader be autocratic or democratic in dealing with the team members? Finally, inter role conflict results from the differing requirements of two or more roles that must be played at the same time. Work roles and non work roles are often in such conflict. For example, a successful executive working for a computer company said that she often worked from 7:30 A.M. to 11:30 P.M. Her long hours led to the breakup of a relationship. Depending on the individual and the situation, people in every other position in the modern organisation also experience one or all three types of role conflict.
