What is near miss
A near miss is a close call. It is an incident that almost happened or did happen- but just did not result in an injury this time around.
What are the causes ?
Unsafe conditions In adequate guarding. Faulty equipment. Unsafe work condition.
Unsafe acts Disobey instructions or procedures. Inattention at work place. Inadequate knowledge. Not using of PPEs or incorrect use.
Incident iceberg Injury iceberg that is 1/11 is above water and 10/11 is under water
Statistics For one serious injuries there are ,
Injury Minor injuries Property damage Near Miss
10 minor injuries 30 property damages 600 property damages.
Example of near miss
A person prevented fall on ground just by catching the side of some object when his leg stumbled on air hoses lying on the floor.
Why worry about near miss
When things like this happen most of us feel relieved that nobody was hurt and simply go back to work. That is the mistake we do. Without investigating the cause and removing the same we leave the unsafe work place for further incident or injury.
End result of neglecting near misses
The person stumbled on an air hose and sustained fracture on his ankle. This could have been avoided if some one noticed the near misses and removed the cause
Possible contributing factors
Chances are that some one else either Observed the air hose on the floor but did not correct the problem. Tripped over the same hose , but did not get hurt, but did not correct the problem, Observed another person trip over the same air hose but did not take the extra time to talk with the person or help correct the situation.
Why it matters According to national safety council 75 % of all accidents are preceded by one or more near misses. It is a wake up call that some thing is wrong and that need to be fixed.
Know about near miss and report it
Report all near misses . Remove the causes. Correct the issues that may hurt. Correct the situation. Make safe the work place.
By recognizing near misses and taking corrective action we are not only reducing number of near misses but also the real accidents
