Common Greetings and Phrases
Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to indentify the names of places on the Word
Cloud, in order to create a list of Spanish speaking countries.
Students will be able to locate Spanish-speaking countries on a world map using the Thinglink
provided to then label a world map.
Students will be able to analyze the world map and relate why so many countries speak
Spanish around the world.

Standard 2: Cultural Understanding
1. Effective communication involves meanings that go beyond words and require an
understanding of perceptions, gestures, folklore, and family and community dynamics. All of
these elements can affect whether and how well a message is received.
Indicator: This will be evident once students locate Spanish-speaking countries on the world
map and visualize how many countries around the world speak Spanish.
New York State Social Studies Standards K-12
Standard 3: Geography Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their
understanding of the geography of the interdependent world in which we livelocal, national,
and globalincluding the distribution of people, places, and environments over Earths surface.
Indicator: This will be evident as students use technology and world maps to discover the
location of Spanish-Speaking countries.
Standard 2: World History Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their
understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history
and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives.
Indicator: This will be evident as students learn how Spanish became the official language of
many imperialized countries.
Motivation: Has anyone ever been to a Spanish-speaking country? If so, where? If not, does
anyone know of any countries around the world that may speak Spanish?
Materials:

Strategies:
Activating Prior Knowledge: Prior to this lesson, students have been exposed to world
geography. Students may have also been to or may be from many of these countries.
Technology: Students will be using the class website to find Spanish-speaking countries and
place them on a map.
Adaptations:
For diverse learners:
Background knowledge: Students may have heard Spanish Spoken in their native country or it
may be their first language. Content Objective: Students will be able to identify and place the
names of Countries on a map.
Language Objectives:
Students will listen to the pronunciation of Spanish-speaking countries.
Students will read the vocabulary terms on the Word Cloud.
Students will write and label Spanish-speaking countries on a map.
Students will orally collaborate with peers as they are working.
Motivation: Students will be asked what other languages theyve heard spoken in their native
country.
Materials: Translations of new vocabulary terms and definitions will be available to students in
their native language.

Procedure:
1. Talk about Spanish-speaking countries that students may have been to
2. Locate these countries on a map
3. Show students the Word Cloud and explain that they will have to examine it to pick out the
names of countries and create a list for their next task.
4. Once students have created their lists, they will print out a copy of a world map from a link on
the class website.
5. Students will label the map using the Thinglink and the game from the website to the best of
their ability.
Informal Assessment/ Closure:
Exit ticket: How and why do you think that so many Spanish-speaking countries came to speak
Spanish as their official language?
