April News FDK 5

We have reviewed the letters/sounds j to v with reminders for

correct formation. Continue to review all the sounds at home
as I am beginning my year-end literacy assessments. Our
school has received many new read aloud books and we will
be voting on the best book this week. This month we have
been focusing on Earth day and how we can help the earth.
As a result, we have read many books to the children on this
topic. Sight words this month have been: for, are, that.
These words will be assessed as well. The children enjoyed
using sound trains to help them sound out 3 letter words.
They move a block onto the train for each sound heard. Continue to read with your child at home as every 5 books earns a
visit to the treasure chest and every 10 books is a free pizza
coupon. As well as reviewing sounds and letters the worksheets have also focused on beginning sounds and sounding
out 3 letter words.
We participated in the school Earth Day assembly and the children did a fine job! We also joined in the Paint It Yellow walk
and our school raised $530.17 for the Cancer Society. It was a
cool day for Jump Rope for Heart skipping! Each student created an egg carton flower for Mrs. Martindale in honour of
Office Managers Day. She was thrilled to receive the bouquet
and our writing.
Our 3D shape museum continues to grow. We have learned a
3D song to help the children identify the figures.
The children used their 5 senses to predict which egg was raw
and which was hard boiled. We have had a Titanic craze in our
room. Many models have been constructed and some children put their thoughts on paper about the Titanic.
This months centres: Easter holiday writing, colour mixing,
colour by #, finding and recording the letters found in Easter
grass, block creations, stamping names/sight words, water
capacity exploration, 2D shape creations and write up
(identifying each shape and the # of each used), # booklet6
to 10, puzzles, making worlds out of coffee filters, mass
weigh scales, guided capacity exploration, Earth Day writing,
listening centre, puzzles, fingerpaint flower, dirt exploration,
letter treasure hunt, measuring length with cubes
