Staff Development Needs Assessment

Background
Chatham County Public Schools has for the past couple of years been
implementing new technologies to be used in the classroom. This new
technology was introduced in our new three year technology plan. After
taking data during 2nd semester of the 2014-2015 school year at Beach High
School, Islands High School, and Jenkins High School, 13% of the ninth grade
students knew how to navigate and upload assignments to Edmodo and 87%
did not.
What I have noticed is that when students enter the ninth grade, they are
used to submitting work manually and lack the knowledge of how to use
online tools to submit (upload) assignments, quizzes, etc. Because I teach
Business, my class is considered an online learning environment. It is
imperative that my students understand and learn how to successfully
navigate through Edmodo to prepare them for future courses that are
involved in having an online learning environment.
Edmodo is an educational tool similar to Facebook, however, by definition, a
specialist network of educators and students, so the risks of being contacted
by strangers for non-academic purposes are greatly reduced, similar to
online tools used in college for example, GoView (Georgia Southern
University Online Tool). Edmodo was developed to create an online learning
environment. It is also a great place to post resources, upload assignments,
respond to polls, and anything else you want to share and engage online
conversation related to course work with other classmates. This is very
important this day in age because most college students are required to
submit (upload) discussion questions, assignments, and quizzes through an
online tool (GoView, Desire to Learn, Etc.)

The Need
Based on the data, Edmodo could be used to not only to engage students
and increase student learning, this web 2.0 tool can be used to expose
students to college classwork experiences on the middle school level.
Edmodo will help increase the goal of Chatham County to increase
technology in all classrooms.
