Standard Four

This artifact demonstrates competence in NAEYC Standard 4 in the following ways: 1) The author created nature-themed activity kits for preschoolers that incorporated multiple content areas and skills using an inquiry-based learning approach. 2) Through making the kits, the author learned about age-appropriate skills and how to incorporate children's interests into lessons. 3) The open-ended kits allow children to explore, ask questions, and learn on their own, connecting to Montessori's view of letting children teach themselves.

Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 4. USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that teaching and learning with young
children is a complex enterprise, and its details vary depending on childrens ages, characteristics, and the
settings within which teaching and learning occur. They understand and use positive relationships and
supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young children and families. Candidates know,
understand, and use a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches, instructional strategies, and
tools to connect with children and families and positively influence each childs development and learning.
(NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the summer semester of 2014 during my ECED 243-Cognitive Curriculum course, I created
nature themed activity kits. These kits where created for a quick activity that children could explore during
free play, or a teacher could use to assess skills of the child. These nature themed bags were created for the
science area. These bags are a based on an inquiry based learning approach to teach children to explore and
learn themselves.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of these activity bags I understand different skills children of the preschool age
need to gain as well as how to incorporate the interests of the children. I was able to use a theme of nature
and science but use many different activities and strategies in multiple content areas to gain the needed skills.
I know, understand, and use appropriate approaches such as inquiry based learning to allow the children to
gain knowledge and explore new information through open-ended questions and active hands on learning.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

I am competent in providing age appropriate activities through a variety of strategies in multiple content areas,
which are meaningful and challenging for my children. I connect this to the theorist Maria Montessori believed in
allowing children to teach themselves and not interfere with their individual learning unless needed. A teacher acts as
more of a facilitator of learning through asking open ended questions to further the thinking processes. In on-going
partnership with families, I would be able to send home information about each of the kits in order for families to gather
free and low cost materials to create their own kits to use at home. This will encourage a stronger home/school
foundation and ultimately increase positive development and learning.
