Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs identify and conduct themselves as members of the
early childhood profession. They know and use ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to
early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative learners who demonstrate knowledgeable,
reflective and critical perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a
variety of sources. They are informed advocates for sound educational practices and policies. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2014, I became Vice President of the Education Outreach Club. After
following in the footsteps and collaborating with President and other officers of the club, during the fall
semester of 2014 I became the President of the Education Outreach club. While being a leader of such an
amazing student organization club, I have been honored with great learning experiences. I have learned more
perspectives on families while volunteering. I have also had to make decisions to benefit the club. Overall, I
have gathered a variety of new knowledge as well as enhanced professional skills and dispositions from being
a part of the Education Outreach Club.

Analysis of What I Learned:

While being apart of EOC I have learned so much about being an early childhood professional. I have
learned more about my community. Most importantly I have learned how to be involved in education in
multiple ways such as service learning projects, professional connections with other education professionals. I
am able to demonstrate my knowledge to my peers, as being a leader. I learned so much more about
collaborating with various people from the EOC.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

Being an officer of the EOC demonstrates my competence of the NAEYC standard 6, because I am now
an early childhood profession. I know the standards and what is and is not a developmentally appropriate
practice.I know how to be a professional when speaking. I connect my experience of being an officer of the
EOC to the theorist Urie Bronfenbrenner. Bronfenbrenner created a theory called ecological systems. He
believed that there are multiple people and places that affect the child. In the first ring, microsystem is where
you find school. School can either be a positive or negative experience for the child. I connect my learning
experience as becoming a professional by how my school and community has effected me and my education.
