Mangalore Tiles

MANGALORE TILES

These tiles are of flat pattern and they provided with suitable projection so that
they interlock with each other, when placed in position.
Tiles are red in colour. Tiles are available for hip ridge and valley portion.
Fifteen tiles are required for covering 1 square meter of an roof area.
Tiles are manufactured in Mangalore, Cochin, Calicut, Gujarat.
Became popular in rural and semi urban areas and used by middle and low
income group people.
Life expectancy 25 years with replacement of about 5% per year.
The dimensions of Mangalore tiles are
Effective length x effective width = 410 x 235 mm
420 x 250 mm , 425 x 260 mm

Projection 7 to 12mm
The tile shall have at least 2 batten lugs with base thickness (thickness at bottom ) not less
than 15 mm and thickness at top not less than 10 mm.
The projection from surface of the tile shall be between 7 and 12 mm .
Batten Lugs:
Eave Lugs:
The tile shall be at least 2 eave lugs with base thickness not less than 15 mm and thickness
at top not less than 10 mm. The projection from surface of lug shall be not less than 10 mm
and shall be shaped to fit into the corrugations.
Corrugations and Cross Ribs :
The cross section of the roofing tile shall be such as to give the tile structural rigidity.
This may be achieved by providing longitudinal corrugations with intermediate cross ribs or
stiffeners .
Tie Down Hole:
At least one hole shall be provided in one of the cross ribs near the eave end of the tile for
securing the tile to the reeper or batten with wire.
The hole shall be clear and true and shall be not more than 2 mm in diameter, but shall be large
enough to pass a 16 mm wire easily.
