NIHI was originally established as the Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) by Professors Stephen MacMahon and Norman Sharpe at the Department of Medicine of The University of Auckland.
Successfully executed the management and coordination of the PEP trial, a 6-year trial involving 170 hospitals in 5 countries and 17,444 participants. Results are published in The Lancet.
Successfully concluded the PROGRESS trial - a $50M (pharma-funded) RCT with >6,000 participants. Results are published in The Lancet.
Anthony Rodgers, then Director of the CTRU, edited first Global Burden of Disease Report. This milestone led to a strategic shift in CTRU's focus, emphasising research on major risk factors affecting global health.
