Gautama Buddha
“Greater in battle
than the man who would conquer
a thousand-thousand men,
is he who would conquer
just one —
himself.
Better to conquer yourself
than others.
When you've trained yourself,
living in constant self-control,
neither a deva nor gandhabba,
nor a Mara banded with Brahmas,
could turn that triumph
back into defeat.”
Buddha

“I love you, Bud," he whispered to Billy and two more tears escaped.
"I love you too, Mitch," Billy whispered back, my breath hitched and both males' eyes came to me.
I waved my wineglass at them and murmured, "Don't mind me. Have your moment."
Mitch leaned back, letting Billy go and grinning at me. "Men don't have moments."
"You do," I returned. "I'm witnessing one."
"This isn't a moment, honey, it's a meeting of the minds," Mitch contradicted me.”

“I'll go gentle, baby," he whispered against my lips. "I promise. You'll always be safe with me."
Oh. My.
"Mitch," I breathed.
His soulful eyes held mine captive as he repeated firmly, "Always.”

“She told me to wait, that I was going to lose a finger." Earl looked toward the kitchen and back at Ty and Duece. He snorted. "I asked her, did she think I was stupid? Then a couple of snips later, whack. Off went the finger. And you know what that woman said to me? I said 'Mara you cut my finger off.' And your mother said to me, 'Well Earl who's stupid now?”

“Best thing that ever happened to me, that shredded washer," he whispered.
"Too bad I didn't know what a washer was or I would have shredded it myself," I whispered back and he burst out laughing.”

“That's another thing that doesn't turn me off, sweetheart, knowin' that you come with those kids and you need to know that. You also need to know I want kids of my own, two of them. But I don't care, if this works out between me and you, that the kids we have will have an older brother and sister that don't have my blood, just my heart.”
Kristen Ashley, Law Man

Kristen Ashley
“I'm payin' and if you even open your mouth to argue with me, I'm gonna be forced to find a way to stop you speaking, and the way I'll pick means Billy's gonna get an eyeful of exactly the kind of friend I intend to be.”
Kristen Ashley, Law Man

“What I mean is, I didn't fall in love with you all as a whole. I fell in love with each of you because of who you are. I don't care about you because you come with Mara. I care about you because you're a good kid. You're smart. You're loyal. And you love and look out for your sister and Mara. I know grown men who do not have a character as fine as yours. Those are the reasons I love you. There are different reasons I love Billie. And there are different reasons I love Mara. Today, what we had together was good. But the feelings I feel for you aren't feelings I have to have in order to have Mara. They're feelings you earned. Now, you with me?”
Kristen Ashley, Law Man

Kristen Ashley
“You're hair was softer than I expected it to be, more beautiful when it's down than I expected it to be. You're sweeter than I expected you to be, funnier, more loyal and I expected all that to be phenomenal so, I gotta tell you, baby, it pleases me no fuckin' end to learn the reality is off-the-charts. Better than that, when you get pissed, I gotta fight against goin' hard. When you smile, I gotta fight against goin' hard. And when you look deep into my eyes and see whatever the fuck you see and I know how much you like it because it's written all over your face, I gotta fight against goin' hard. But even with the promise of that, finally havin' you is another reality that's off-the-charts.”
Kristen Ashley, Law Man

“The sooner you stop fighting, the easier your life will be. That is what your purpose is."
Lana stood so abruptly she nearly fell backward. "No.”

“Let's see if I can tear that cocoon wide open and let my Mara fly.”

“You're Mara, you're sweet, you're beautiful and I will not forget until the day I die how beautiful it felt to slide inside you with you wrapped around me, see your eyes get wet and know straight in my gut that you felt how beautiful it was too.”
Kristen Ashley, Law Man

Michelle Hodkin
“The bathroom. An ingenious idea.

When we reached it, I turned to Noah.

“I’m going to be in here for a while. You probably don’t want to wait.”

I only briefly caught the horrified expression on his face before I pushed open the door with overwhelming force. Win.”
Michelle Hodkin, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

“Until recently, I believed all horses were alike. They’ve been giant, four-footed animals with ugly dispositions and alarmingly large teeth for so long that it’s a bit startling to notice how different they are from each other. Mara’s mare, for instance, is a chestnut bay except for a wide white blaze down her nose that makes her seem perpetually surprised. My huge plodding mount is a dark brown near to black creature, with the most unruly mane I’ve ever seen. Her shaggy forelock covers her right eye and reaches almost to her mouth.
Mara’s mare head-butts her in the chest. Grinning, Mara plants a kiss between her wide, dumb eyes, then murmurs something.
“Have you named her?” I ask.
“Yes! Her name is Jasmine.”
I grimace. “But jasmine is such a sweet, pretty flower.”
Mara laughs. “Have you named yours?”
“Her name is Horse.”
She rolls her eyes. “If you want to get along with your mount you have to learn each others’ languages. That means starting with a good name.”
“All right.” I pretend to consider. “What about Imbecile? Or Poops A Lot?”

“I’ve shared more breakfasts with you than
any woman I’ve dated in the last year and a half,” Mitch returned.
“I know what you look like in the morning. I know what you act like
when you come home tired after work. I know that you pick the least
expensive thing on the menu either to be nice or to be annoying in
order to put me off. But I think it’s to be nice because you
are nice and also both times you thought you’d be spending
time with just me, you dressed in a way that would not, in any way,
put me off. I know you cuddle when you’re sleeping. I know you take
only milk in your coffee and you make coffee strong. I know you’re
really good with kids. And I know that you use music and scents to
regulate your mood. So I’m thinking this is not a first date. This
is more like us hittin’ the six month mark. And the six month mark
is when you stop talkin’ about shit that really doesn’t matter and
start talkin’ about shit that means everything.”
Kristen Ashley

“Just... resting eyes. Heal me tomorrow. If I'm not..."

Belen slaps her awake again.

"I hate you," she says.

"Yes," he agrees solemnly. "For years now.”
Rae Carson

Enock Maregesi

“I'm relieved to hear that your vanity has weathered this egregious trial unscathed."
"Thank y--Oh. Sarcasm again.”

Maria V. Snyder
“Can you be an assassin without killing anyone?"
Onora shot her an odd look. "I ... don't know. I don't think so."
"Is there a name for people who have those skills?" Mara asked.
"Yes. Dangerous," I said.
Mara rubbed her hands together as a gleam lit her eyes.
"Oh, I like that. I want to be dangerous.”
Maria V. Snyder, Dawn Study

Kristen Ashley
“But that light that shone in Mitch's eyes told me he loved it more. Not because he liked roller coasters and crappy food.

No, because he liked to see us happy, he liked to make us that way and he didn't mind us knowing it.

From the beginning, he'd demonstrated generosity, selflessness and protectiveness, but there was something beautiful about sensing his contentment grow as the hours passed and he got more out of giving something to us than we got out of having it.

I knew before that Mitch would make a great dad.

But I knew right then that he'd build a beautiful family.”
Kristen Ashley, Law Man

“Denial is how I cope. If I just deny everything, it can't hurt me right?”

“As Gideon always said in the opening of his act, There is always something extraordinary in the ordinary”
Amanda Hocking, Freeks

“Chöd is conventionally and misleadingly seen as analogous to, if not derived from, shamanic initiatory dismemberment visions, as well as dualistic anti-body ascetic practices. Two of the elements most commonly referenced by authors in their "identification" of Chöd and/as shamanism—the dismemberment/sacrifice of the body and "demonology"—are presented in an oversimplistic fashion. In the first instance, the numerous Buddhist precursors for the offering of the body provide ample testimony to the ethical and meritorious status such acts have in the Buddhist imagination. As for the "demonology" of Chöd, one must keep in mind the psychology and philosophy of mind that explicitly undergirds the discourse of Düd [Skt: mārā] in Chöd.”
Michelle Sorensen, Making the Old New Again and Again: Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition

“...the Chöd teachings attributed to Machik Labdrön both rely and innovate on Buddhist representations of mental functionings of a human being, including the onto-epistemological trope of the Universal Base Consciousness [ālaya-vijñāna] and the psycho-ethical trope of Negative Forces as Düd [bdud, māra, demon]. By drawing on and revising these traditional models, Chöd is able to develop effective techniques for "cutting through mind.”
Michelle Sorensen, Making the Old New Again and Again: Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition

“I carry my wounds with pride, because they mean I fought for my freedom.”
Alenka KRANJAC, Mara, vilinska kraljična

“And then she saw shadowy thorns jutting from the side of the cart. Arrows. They were arrows.
Her heart pounded as the realization struck her like lightning.
They were under attack.
And she was alone.”

Sophie Lark
“In that moment I realize this whole thing has been a performance.

She knew I would watch.

She's been fucking him for me, at me.

To get revenge on me.

And I realize... she's everything I dreamed of and more. More vengeful. More strategic. More effective.

More fucked up.”
Sophie Lark, There Are No Saints

“You didn’t want me for my looks?” I say, pretending to be hurt.

Mara laughs, despite herself. “Not back then,” she says, “But don’t worry, I’ve become much more shallow. Now I notice them every minute of the day.”

“Thank you,” I say, tossing my hair and smoothing it back with both hands.”
Sophie Lark, There Is No Devil
