Wear your MAGA hat and prejudice for this one.

This is a review of the series. While there are a few good jokes, the whole thing is a bunch of stereotypes, gung ho marines as they never existed, and one cliche after another. Worse, by the end of the second book and clearly in the third, he portrays Clinton as the traitor who sold the zombie virus. I have never read such an obvious display of prejudiced drivel. He had a few interesting subplots in the first book, despite the cliche he-men, but his partisan attacks keep orbiting up into drooling "Lock her up" territory. Despite a couple of interesting subplots and jokes, this series devolves into rancid extremist right wing posturing and attacks on Clinton.

Wow! What a story! I don’t know where this David Simpson has been hiding, I guess in a truck stop or something but he did such a bang up job on this book! I had to check twice to make sure I had read it correctly that this was his first book! Dang! His first book at it was freakin’ phenomenal! I had heard about it when it had won the book of the month in the book club I belong to. I read the blurb and thought I would give it a shot…not knowing what to expect because I didn’t know this author and was pleasantly surprised when I started to read it. I love discovering new zombie stories and new authors and this was like finding a diamond in the rough! The Hope Diamond of diamonds! It is that good! From start to finish, the action keeps on rolling(see what I did there?…rolling) and never stops. I loved the characters which were well described and so likeable and relatable. This is a must add to anyone’s read list that loves zombies or just loves a well written story that will keep you entertained for hours! All I can say is you won’t be disappointed!

Did not finish.
The "conservative" ideology that bleeds through is off-putting.
I don't mind some mindless fun, but it's not clever or original.

When you feel like blowing your mobile operator to smithereens and your significant other pressed that toothpaste in the middle again, nothing like good zombie apocalypse to keep you in check.

Goodread, easy to follow, guilty appocalyptic pleasure.

This is the first book I've read by David Simpson and it most definitely won't be the last. What a fast paced, action packed roller coaster ride of death, blood, terror and hordes of the dead.
There are three separate groups fighting for survival in this book. There are vets, now long haul truckers, tourists and travelers trapped at a truck stop. A group trapped in a high rise office building and a group of students trapped in a school. They all set out to escape the hordes to find safety.
The cause of the outbreak is unique and terrifying. This is not your usual zombie book as the plot and the reason for this horrific eradication of the world's population will throw you for a loop. Thumbs up to David Simpson and I'm really looking forward to the next book in this awesome series.

NEW AUTHOR WITH A GREAT FIRST BOOK!!!

What a great story, first time author David A. Simpson has written. The downfall of most of the world comes as a terrorist attack, but the how and why was really super to read. This is one story I would recommend to others, definitely worth a 5 star rating.

Ever since television shows like The Walking Dead brought zombies into the mainstream, the undead have been a mainstay in fiction. Granted, they were around well before then, but never has there been such a saturation of zombies, and zombie-themed works cropping up all over the place. Some trends seem to ebb and flow, or die away, but it is testament to the popularity of zombies as a subject, that explorations into undead realms just keep on keeping on.
Naturally, with so many zombie related books being churned out in mass proliferation, there are true gems, there are terrible ones, and there are those which, while well-written tread the same well-worn path and present nothing new. Then, there are those which manage to find a truly unique way to present the subject.
David A. Simpson’s ‘Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage’ is one of those that slots nicely into that final category.
When there are so many spins out there on the good old zombie formula, that it is increasingly harder to maintain a fresh approach or conjure up something new, Simpson has done remarkably well with this balls to the wall, fast-paced, action-packed foray into the undead.
Zombie Road revolves around a collective of assorted miscreants including random truck drivers, college students and several other survivors of a zombie outbreak, where a virus has been released and infected a vast amount of the population at the same time. These souls, frequenting the Three Flags Truck Stop out in the desert areas of Reno, aren’t at first even aware that the zombie apocalypse has descended upon the world, but soon enough they make that horrifying discovery.
Now it’s up to long haul trucker, Gunny, to ferry this bunch of intriguing characters to sanctuary, before he can concentrate on his own mission to rescue his own family.
Simpson’s prose is fast and furious, well-written, with solidly developed and well-realised characters, and a main man who isn’t just a cardboard cut-out cliché of many of those so-called heroes who populate zombie apocalypse fiction. The pacing is exemplary, there are some brilliant moments of dialogue and character interplay, and the extreme zombie despatching when it kicks off, is done so with gleeful splatter in abundance, and violence notched up to incredible levels.
Do yourself a favour and check this one out, whether you’re a zombie aficionado or otherwise. There’s a whole lot more to Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage than just another undead apocalypse tale.

Great Read!

Warning: Possible Spoiler

I have read countless novels from the zombie apocalypse genre, and "Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage" easily falls into the top ten. Once I started reading, it was nearly impossible to put this book down! The action scenes were plentiful; and the descriptions David A. Simpson gave were so detailed and vivid I felt like I was sitting right there in the passenger seat of one of their decked-out Mack Trucks. I loved the humor and attitude that came from a group of rough, ex-military truck drivers doing what they do best - kicking ass.

So...If "Zombie Road" is so good why did I only give it 5 stars? Well, you see (this is where the possible spoiler comes in), every zombie apocalypse is caused by something (or even more likely, someone) and in this case it was the Muslims. I personally feel that in this day and age with all the hate against Muslims that is spreading through the United States, and even the world, this may not have been the best direction to go. The Muslim religion is one of peace and love. I had a hard time accepting the idea that an entire group of people were made to look bad, when only a few of them are truly evil. Plus, I'm pretty sure that these extremists wouldn't bother to save all the Muslims of the world - only themselves.

Anyway, that being said, the subject of the apocalypse's cause takes up very little space in the book. The rest is about survival and helping your fellow man. All-in-all "Zombie Road" was a great read and I look forward to starting book 2 as soon as I press the "submit" button on this review!

This is the future conservatives want.

File this under 'so bad, it's good.' I laughed all the way through this. It's cheesy, dripping in toxic masculinity and xenophobia. This book should have a Maga hat on it. Every man is a military veteran. Every woman is a nurse or a cook. The black guy is a drug dealer. David Simpson must be cry masturbating to a picture of Trump daily.

The 'Muslims' have United and released a zombie virus on the west through their halal pork products, but our merry band of racists aren't affected because they don't eat that foreign muck. Hilary Clinton had something to do with it too. Absolute trash.

The only way this guy can support his political views is by having a zombie apocalypse happen. 'see? We need all these guns and military men to save the women and pansy brained femboys from the zombies'. There's your campaign slogan for you.

What's truly terrifying is that actual grown people with polling cards read this and happy clap.

Zombie Road had me hooked from the outset. It's crammed with believable and likeable characters and possesses a powerful drive which keeps the plot and action flowing. The humour is a welcome contrast to the backdrop of post-apocalyptic despair and the story finishes with you crying out to know more. Can't wait for book two.

This was a 3.5 star book for me, but I am rounding it up to 4 because frankly I can, and have to because Goodreads won't let us do 1/2 stars.

I will get this out there right from the beginning. This first book is politically incorrect for it's choice of the "Big Evil" and by some of the phrases used by a teenage boy in 2018 when this book was published. But as far as all the reviews about MAGA, Conservative, rightwing garbage, well in this first book at least, It is not there. My Grandad was a truck driver and he spouts more conservative, libertarian, claptrap every holiday then this book did. Now that may change and if it does I will act accordingly.

For those interested, these are the fast moving zombies, which is not my favorite type, being an tried and true Romero zombie kind of girl. I liked the plot, it moved fast but not so fast that the "good stuff" was overlooked. There is A LOT of blood and gore in this one. I guess it is to be expected when the most effective way of killing the zombies is with a tricked out semitruck.

I plan on reading the next book in the series, but I will call out Conservative claptrap if I read it, just as I would Liberal claptrap, and yes I used liberal. Liberal is not one of the seven dirty words and I don't know why people are trying to change it to "progressive."

Keep an eye out for my review of Bloodbath on the Blacktop Zombie Road II.

First and foremost - DEAR AUTHOR... PLEASE USE A THESAURUS AND FIND ANOTHER WORD OTHER THAN "KEENING." It's used to such abundance and is, oftentimes, used as the ONLY word to describe the sound of the Zombies. Please, learn some new words (i.e. "too-long hair" is the only way you describe Jessie's hair) if you're planning on spreading out a story across these many pages.
- Also, it's "sneaked" not "snuck."
- Mosquitoes being out mid-day is a strange thing? Do you live in a different kind of world than the rest of us? Mosquitoes can be out all day, being out in the middle of the day is expected, not an oddity.

As I'm doing the audiobook of the series I'm not sure if the narrator is mispronouncing some words or if the author is using the wrong words. Given some of the word issues throughout that are clearly from the author I'm going to figure the wrong words were used.

A bit better than the more common Z-tales. Only some obsessiveness with guns and gear but what makes it more tolerable than so many others is that it isn't done so often and so excessively that the book is more a gun manual than a story and that it fits in with the story when the descriptions do appear.

However, the author does not hide their apparent dislike for Muslims and seems to be a little stuck in antiquated gender views. While the women characters aren't depicted as weaklings that need saving or are incapable of doing much of anything - in fact, a few of the female characters play important roles, albeit secondary to the main male characters - the "mentality" of the "women-folk" is still very evident.

Overall, however, the story is entertaining even though they have a pretty easy-going way of things all things considered. Worth a read although it probably could have been condensed and not be an actual trilogy. In fact, book 2 ends because the author just felt it was a good enough place to end and seems actually random. With some realistic trimming where the story and key elements remain intact, this could be a wonderful and powerful story into one book.

There are far worse Z-tales out there that are just too terrible to finish but this series was good enough to complete.

"Convoy of Carnage" is a fun, easy to read, zombie romp in the line of 28 Days Later meets Maximum Overdrive. While not deep, the characters are real enough for the reader to slip into their perspective without too much effort. This is a book that is action focused, so don't expect a deep philosophical exploration of what zombieism means metaphorically. I would say that the books biggest strength is the author's apparently deep understanding of truckers, trucks, and trucker culture. This allows the reader access to a world that surrounds them but remains opaque to most Americans. The book's most glaring weakness is in where it attempts a larger explanation of the zombie plague and falls back on an idea that doesn't hold up well and is uncomfortable at best. Final recommendation: if you like Zombie stories, are not easily offended by political incorrectness, and want a fast and easy action adventure. This is a good choice for you.

This was entertaining but I have this pet peeve with zombie fiction: how are thousands of the undead outside? Wouldn't most be in houses, cars, or hospitals? If zombies can't open doors then most of the undead should be stuck indoors meaning the healthy folks should be able to wander around outdoors without too much trouble.

Couldn't get past the racist undertones towards Muslim people. I get it. The plot lines states that the Muslims were behind it but but to have characters talking about killing every single Muslim person, and specifically calling out women and children who are not zombies, is way too far. Too bad, the writer actually creates decent characters.

I love dystopian novels and I enjoy zombie books, so I knew I would probably enjoy Zombie Road, the first book in Simpson’s intense Convoy of Carnage series. We follow a group of truckers at a truck stop in Nevada and watch how they revert back to their military origins when a zombie outbreak takes out most of the world in a 24-hour period.

This book is hard to put down once you start. As you switch from Gunny and his friends in a truck stop in Nevada, to his wife stuck in an upper floor of her office in downtown Atlanta, and to their son trapped in detention in High School, the intensity is ramps up quickly. Simpson has an incredible hand for action and for mixing undeniable humor in his worlds.

These chapters are short and sweet which keeps the pacing flowing smooth and maintains a high level of action throughout. I was reminded of George R. R. Martin in how I hated switching away from a perspective, but by the end of the chapter I was invested in this new character and didn’t want to switch from them. He has an incredible way of defining characters and coming up with nicknames for them that stay true to their character throughout the story. His pacing is so great though that at almost 400 pages long, I had no idea each page flew past so quickly because I was so engrossed in the world.

An excellent starter in a series that is going on seven installments right now. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in his series!

In real life, Simpson is a truck driver, and as you read this he’s probably running urgent equipment and supplies across the country to hospitals and doctors who are in dire need right now. He’s a true hero.

My rating: 5/5 zombie head shots!

I listened to the audiobook version: Run time  9hrs and 32 minutes, narrated by Eric A. Shelman

In David A. Simpson's Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage, we find ourselves introduced to a variety of nick-named truckers hanging out at a truck stop, right before the world ends. Well, not the entire world, that's one of the fun and interesting elements of this book, but before we dive into that, we'll tell you a little more about the main characters.

The protagonist of the story is Gunny, an ex-military man, who the book opens up with as he is being interviewed, presumably where the series ends, talking about how he survived. We quickly come to learn that the fall of civilization, to a very fast and ravenous form of zombie, was orchestrated by people with evil intent. The chaos starts almost immediately, with our group of truckers surrounded inside the truckstop learning how the rest of the country has fallen. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the country, we find Gunny's wife and son trapped in even direr circumstances.

With the help of his friends and fellow truckers, Gunny prepare's for the long journey to rescue them.

There's a lot going on in the background of the story. Shadowy government organizations, an unexpected new president and a foreign power suspected of orchestrating the fall of humanity. Oh, and did I mention nuclear peril? It's almost as if, even if they do survive the zombies, they can't possibly survive all the other things that are going to destory them. All of these multiple elements really keep you on the edge of your seat and hungry for the story to continue.

What did I like about this story?
At first, I was getting whiplash from all of the truckers with nicknames. Everyone seemed to have one, but I quickly came to find and delight in the fact that each of those names came with a story of their own. Each made sense and made the characters not only memorable but also loveable.

I loved the fact the story was so action packed, pretty much right from the get go. The author makes light of the fact that zombies were impossible until they weren't, something any modern zombie story needs to have is a little bit of self-awareness about the genre, and he does that well.

What didn't I like about this story?
While I'm not generally a fan of fast zombies, they add to the action packed thrills of Zombie Road. Hordes of slow zombies wouldn't be all that scary if they were getting mowed down by a semi, but fast ones, that don't stop running, even after you've burned rubber down the road, well that's some scary shit!

Aside from that, it did take awhile for the Convoy of Carnage to begin, but not without reason. You can't just roll out and drive through this crazy world without a plan.

Narration:
Eric A. Shelman, an author of Zompoc fiction himself, does a fabulous job of narrating the book, including adding little tidbits like making the radio communications sound like they are actually coming over the radio and giving each of the main characters a unique voice.

Conclusion: (Aka: Would I listen to more by this author?)
Absolutely. This book has been getting rave reviews for months and I actually moved it up on my listening schedule so I could find out what all the hype was about and it didn't disappoint. The second book is out now and I'll be listening to it soon and then I'll be like the rest of Mr. Simpson's ravenous fans and chasing his truck down the road screaming for him to finish book 3!

This review is for the entire 7 book series.

I have to admit I am completely blown away by this series. I got the first book from Amazon Prime and read the others through KU. These books were my "relaxing" books between doing ARC reads for other authors. I don't know why I picked Zombie Road, maybe I needed something different than romance reads. Honestly, I don't care what got me tuned into Zombie Road and the series. I loved it!! I am kind of upset that I think there should be a book 8 to tie up all the loose ends. I want to know what happens next.

This series takes place after the fall of civilization. Zombies outnumber living people. The heroes in the book start out as a band of ex-military men. They get a safe town set up. Give people hope to have a somewhat normal life again. By the end of the series, the hero of the books is Gunny's son, Jessie.

If blood and guts are not your thing, then maybe skip this series. I felt it was very realistic. Well...most of it. There are several storylines going on throughout the series. We have Casey the cannibal, Griz, and Gunny, Jessie and Scarlett, The different townships, the tower, Area 51, a band of kids that have tamed zoo animals and let us not forget the cult with the mad scientist and even madder leader.

Now if that doesn't sound entertaining to you then you must not like exciting books. I am now off to read The Feral Children: Animals. I liked the parts in the series with the kids and I am excited to read more about them.

Carnage Supreme! Title was So Perfect, Actually Laughed Out loud, So It Was a MUST READ!!!!

Anyone that makes you laugh OUT LOUD with just the written word takes great talent! Add a kick ass story that's amazingly well written from the first page AND has well rounded, believable characters that you can't help but love, makes for one of the best books of this genre I have read in a very long time. Laughing out loud isn't the only thing that'll be coming out of your mouth either, so don't read around the littles and if you have a swear jar wherever you are when you read it, be prepared to owe a small fortune to it by the end of this tale extraordinaire!!! Well done D.A. Simpson!!! When's the next one due because I'm ready right now!
