Event details
Join the Geological Society's Home Counties North Regional Group for a behind-the-scenes tour at IBIS Limited, hosted and presented by Barry Hunt FGS, Director at IBIS Limited.
Interpretation of petrographic thin sections is one of the foundation skills for the modern day/traditional geologist. This visit will include talks on petrographic thin section slide preparation, and micromorphology (thin section analysis); demonstration microscopic examination of the optical properties of the minerals in rocks and sediments, its composition and structure, and interpretation of rock formation geological history.
Attendees will hear stories of engineering issues investigated for a wide range of rock types, and of materials collected from the HCNRG field trip led by John Wong FGS to Bardon Hill new quarry in October 2024.
Host
Barry Hunt FGS is a member of the HCNRG. He is a consulting chartered geologist and surveyor specialising in the survey of stone-clad buildings and the investigation of construction issues where natural stone is involved. A vital part of his many investigations has been petrographic examination of not just stone but other construction materials too. Barry would like to welcome to his workplace those who wish to know more about what is arguably a geologist's most powerful investigative tool, other than their own senses.
