About this audiobook

From the author of the international bestseller Before the Coffee Gets Cold, this book follows four new customers who hope to travel back in time in a little Japanese café.

In a back alley in Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee—the chance to travel back in time.

With faces both familiar and new, Tales from the Cafe follows the story of four patrons who visit to take advantage of café Funiculi Funicula's time-traveling offer and revisit moments with family, friends and lovers. Each one must face up to the past to move on with their lives.

Kawaguchi's wistful and heartwarming new novel once again invites the reader to ask themselves, "What would you do if you could travel back in time?"

I didn't connect with the characters and stories in this second installment of the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series for some reason. The stories were not bad at all (characters going back to see dead relatives or talk with parents, etc.) but for some reason, they didn't pack the same punch as the first collection did.

Same exact writing style as the first novel (no complaints there) but I do find the over-explanation of some details a bit tiresome at times.

This book is slightly better than the previous one because Kazo realizes she deserves to be happy and decides to move on in her life after her mother's death.
I'm not aware of the publication process in Japan or why the author decided to publish the two books separately but I believe if some of the repeated parts were edited/cut out and all the chapters were published as a short story collection it would make more sense.

If you think about it, there are only so many things you can do when you're allowed to time travel but can't leave your spot, affect the future or only meet the people that frequent the cafe. This book still plucks your heartstrings with its simple complexities. Its a good refreshing read.
