About this audiobook
From the New York Times bestselling author of Moriarty and Trigger Mortis, this fiendishly brilliant, riveting thriller weaves a classic whodunit worthy of Agatha Christie into a chilling, ingeniously original modern-day mystery.
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway’s latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the bestselling crime writer for years, she’s intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan’s traditional formula has proved hugely successful. So successful that Susan must continue to put up with his troubling behavior if she wants to keep her job.
Conway’s latest tale has Atticus Pünd investigating a murder at Pye Hall, a local manor house. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but the more Susan reads, the more she’s convinced that there is another story hidden in the pages of the manuscript: one of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition, and murder.
Masterful, clever, and relentlessly suspenseful, Magpie Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage English crime fiction in which the reader becomes the detective.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Feb 15, 2023 I am pleasantly surprised that a crime novel does not use a conventional style. And this one achieves it remarkably well. A crime story within another. Like a Russian "matryoshka." A well-mixed puzzle solved slowly. Brilliant like its title. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nov 9, 2022 A very original "mystery" novel in terms of its structure (a novel within another novel, we could say) that pays tribute to this detective genre and is entertaining and interesting from start to finish. The shame is that some aspects towards the end of the "real" plot are not very convincing. I mean, that the culprit doesn't destroy the most important evidence of their crime and just leaves it in a drawer as if it were any old thing, well, that doesn’t fly... (and this is not a spoiler because I’m not saying who the murderer is or what the evidence is). In that respect, I find the resolution of the "fiction" plot paradoxically more believable than the real one. But as I said, despite this, it's a highly recommended read. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Oct 18, 2022 The idea is brilliant; I don't know if this resource has been used before, but if the creation is theirs, the author deserves a round of applause: two detective novels in one, where the resolution of the crime in the first is completely tangled with the crime in the second. However, with so many praises, my stars are few. The problem is that in literature, brilliant ideas are not enough; one must know how to express them. In that sense, the execution is mediocre. It's not bad, but it doesn't even come close to matching the height of the idea. The first novel is a copy, a deliberate attempt to mimic Agatha Christie, but trying to imitate the queen of crime is difficult and highlights many flaws. However, the descriptions and the local atmosphere are well done. The "second novel" is more obvious and a bit slow. It's a long book but still enjoyable to read. (Translated from Spanish)
