KIERAN GILL: It was 39 degrees at the Pace Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, and Enzo Maresca was participating in drills personally. Pressing Wesley Fofana as he passed from the back. Showing Mykhailo Mudryk where to sprint and when. Teaching Reece James how to invert, having already pored over the games he played in midfield while on loan at Championship Wigan Athletic in 2018-19. Owner Behdad Eghbali was watching from the same stand as us, encapsulated by Maresca's engaged coaching while sandwiched between his two sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. It was ultra precise, with the 44-year-old Italian knowing there is no time to lose as they prepare to begin the Premier League season at home to Manchester City. Then, a whoosh of wind from over the tree line blew us all back, as if the US Army military base Fort McPherson down the road had just performed a nuclear test without prior warning. Players froze at the gust front. We all did.
