Freeze-dried leaves of some selected vegetables (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius, Talinum fruticosum and Solanum macrocarpon) were examined for
antioxidant activity and analysed for vitamin E profile, using Ferric-ion Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay. Total phenolic content (TPC)
was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu method, and vitamin E profile was determined by HPLC analysis. Based on dry weight of the vegetables,
C. aconitifolius had the highest antioxidant activity (122 μmole Trolox equivalent/g dry wt), followed by S. macrocarpon (115.2 μmole TE/g dry wt)
and T. fruticosum (78.14 μmole TE/g dry wt). Total phenolic content ranged from 349.2 to 1247.6 mg GAE/g dry wt for T. fruticosum, S.
macrocarpon and C. aconitifolius, respectively. Vitamin E profile (tocopherol & tocotrienols) was significantly higher in C. aconitifolius (p<0.05)
than in other two vegetables. The results suggest that these vegetables when consumed can be utilized to block/scavenge free radicals thereby
alleviating symptoms associated with chronic and degenerative diseases.

The aim of the study was to examine combinations of base oils and herbal additives with a view to obtaining macerates with improved health benefits. Base oils were cold-pressed from the seeds of black cumin, borage, evening primrose, safflower, walnut, common hazel, and oilseed rape, as well as the flesh of sea-buckthorn fruits. They were then supplemented with herbs, including basil, thyme, and sage, in order to create macerates. Total antioxidant activity and tocopherol level were analyzed in oils, macerates, and oil cakes. Additionally, chemical properties of oil cakes—such as the level of fibre, vitamin C, β-carotene, and lutein—were also examined. Supplementation with herbs caused diversified effects on antioxidant activity and tocopherol level in macerates depending on the base oil, herb, and supplementation method. The obtained results indicate that tocopherol level does not play a decisive role in determining the antioxidant properties of oils, macerates, and oil cakes, suggesting significant involvement of other antioxidants. Among the tested macerates, the most promising one seems to be oilseed rape oil enriched with sage or basil to maximize its health benefits. The study can serve as a starting point for the development and implementation of functional macerates and oil cakes in healthy nutrition.

In present work deodorizer distillates of canola and sunflower oil were studied for their chemical characterization. Tocopherols, sterols, hydrocarbons and fatty acid composition were determined by Gas chromatography Mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Results indicated that deodorizer distillates of canola oil (DDCLO) studied had higher saponification value in the range of 164.2–175.8 mg/g and all deodorizer distillate of sunflower oil (DDSFO) had high iodine value of 126.2–127.1 g/100g. Peroxide value and free fatty acids were present in the range between 7.0-8.9 mEq/Kg and 35.7-54.4 g/100g in DDSFO and DDCLO samples, respectively. Contents of oleic acid (49.3–51.1 g/100g) and linolenic acid (6.2–7.5 g/100g) were significantly greater in DDCLO samples. Conversely, DDSFO contained concentrated amount of linoleic acid (52.8–53.3 g/100g). Tocopherols and hydrocarbons were significantly higher in all DDSFO samples while, sterols were dominant in DDCLO samples. GC–MS provided excellent results for simultaneous determination of tocopherols, sterols, hydrocarbons and fatty acid composition of deodorizer distillates of canola and sunflower oil.

Oil bodies were removed from mature sunflower through wet grinding followed by filtration then centrifugation and recovered as the buoyant fraction. Washing this fraction with buffer (water-washed oil bodies, WWOB) or 9 M urea (urea-washed oil bodies, UWOB) resulted in the removal of extraneous proteins. SDS-PAGE of the proteins still associated with the oil body fraction after washing indicated that this effect was particularly dramatic with urea washing. Thirty-eight percent of the total seed tocopherol was recovered in WWOB after only one cycle of oil body recovery. The total phenolic content (TPC) of differentially washed sunflower seed oil bodies was used as a marker for the nonspecific association of phenolic compounds to oil bodies. This value decreased with increased removal of proteins from oil bodies, whereas the converse was true for tocopherol values, which increased from 214 mg total tocopherol kg−1 WWOB [dry wt basis (dwb)] to 392 mg total tocopherol kg−1 UWOB (dwb). The ratio of the four tocopherol isomers remained constant in the seed and oil body preparations (α:β:γ:δ approximately 94∶5∶0.5∶0.5). This work provides evidence that an intrinsic population of tocopherol molecules exists in the oil bodies of mature sunflower seeds.

Transmission electron microscopy of sections of oat (Avena sativa L.) grain suggested that the highest concentrations oil bodies were in the aleurone and germ rather than the starchy endosperm. Oil bodies recovered from homogenized tissues by centrifugation and washed in (9 M) urea were significantly (P<0.05) enriched in lipid (93.3±1.4% dry wt) and low in protein (1.4±0.2%) compared with unwashed (40.2±1.9% lipid; 23.0±1.8% protein), water-washed (78.6±1.2% lipid; 7.8±0.5% protein), and salt-washed (1 M NaCl) oil bodies (89.9±0.4% lipid; 5.1±0.4% protein). Washing significantly reduced (P<0.05) the total phenolic content of the oil bodies but significantly increased concentrations of E-vitamers, on a dry weight basis, suggesting an intrinsic association between the E-vitamers and oat oil bodies. The profile of E-vitamers in the oil bodies reflected that in oat grain with α-tocotrienol accounting for ca. 66% of the total E-vitamers. These symptoms continue on for about a day until chest tightening occurs with all the other symptoms around day 6. Fatigue, fever, cough, muscle pain, shortness of breath, and chest tightening continue to worsen throughout the next 24 hours. The person develops Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and has to be admitted into the hospital. If the symptoms worsen the person is admitted to ICU and placed on oxygen. The Wuhan study found that fever begins to subside around day 12 after initial infection. After this, the person's breathing usually begins to improve. Those whose symptoms worsen usually die around day 18 from the initial infection.

Covid-19 is a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The outbreak originated in Wuhan, China in December of 2019. It began to spread globally around mid-January of 2020. In March of that year, The World Health Organization officially recognized it as a pandemic disease. The most common symptoms of Covid-19 infection are fever, fatigue, cough, and shortness of breath. The most significant effects of Covid-19 are inflammation and oxidative stress which lead to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and organ damage. The most common symptom which leads to hospital admission is shortness of breath. This paper is intended to make a case for the isolated use of Vitamin E as a measure that could hypothetically alleviate symptomatic fatigue and shortness of breath in Covid-19 infections and thus possibly reduce hospital and ICU admission.

Tocotrienols, the unsaturated form of vitamin E, were reported to modulate platelet aggregation and thrombotic mechanisms in pre-clinical studies. Using a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cartridge-based measurement system, a randomised, double-blind, crossover and placebo-controlled trial involving 32 metabolic syndrome adults was conducted to investigate the effect of palm-based tocotrienols and tocopherol (PTT) mixture supplementation on platelet aggregation reactivity. The participants were supplemented with 200 mg (69% tocotrienols and 31% α-tocopherol) twice daily of PTT mixture or placebo capsules for 14 days in a random order. After 14 days, each intervention was accompanied by a postprandial study, in which participants consumed 200 mg PTT mixture or placebo capsule after a meal. Blood samples were collected on day 0, day 14 and during postprandial for the measurement of platelet aggregation reactivity. Subjects went through a 15-day washout period before commencement of subsequent intervention. Fasting platelet aggregation reactivity stimulated with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) did not show substantial changes after supplementation with PTT mixture compared to placebo (p = 0.393). Concomitantly, changes in postprandial platelet aggregation reactivity remained similar between PTT mixture and placebo interventions (p = 0.408). The results of this study highlight the lack of inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation after short-term supplementation of PTT mixture in participants with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is associated with disrupted haemostasis balance indicated by higher platelet reactivity and hypercoagubility 1–3. Changes in the regulation of thrombosis promote the development of cardiovascular diseases in individuals with metabolic syndrome, which has been classified as a real disease entity by Center for Disease Control 4–6. Being a global public health concern, there are no clinical recommendations thus far to initiate antithrombotic therapy for individuals with metabolic syndrome. This advocates the need for investigations on supplements or nutraceuticals that have the potential to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases as preventive measures. Lentinus crinitus is a wild fungus, which produces mushrooms consumed by some Amazonian Indians. Besides, it is recognized for its diverse biological activities and biotechnological applications. However, there are few reports with limited information on basidiocarp chemical composition and cytotoxicity. Our study determined and evaluated the chemical composition, cytotoxicity, and antioxidant activity of L. crinitus pileus and stipe separately. Chromatographic methods were used to evaluate basidiocarp chemical composition. Cytotoxicity was verified using a cell culture from porcine liver and against a panel of human tumor cells from different models. Antioxidant activity was assessed by different in vitro methods. The effect of vitamin E intake on spatial learning and working memory performances of young rats has been investigated in the Morris water
maze and locomotor activity has been assessed by an open-field test. A total of 45 young male Wistar albino rats aged two months were divided into three
equal groups: control, olive oil, and vitamin E groups. These groups were treated for 30 days with a once daily intraperitoneal injection. The rats were then
tested for their ability to find the location of the platform (spatial learning). The results revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between
the time spent to find the platform and the time spent in half area of the tank, including the platform among the group, while the time spent to find the
platform was found to have increased from the first day to the fourth day in all the groups. In the open-field test, the locomotor activity quite significantly
increased in the peripheral area in the olive oil group. The supplementation with vitamin E for a short period had not improved the learning performance
of the healthy young rats. It was concluded that the beneficial effect of vitamin E intake on learning is related to the beginning time and the duration of
vitamin E intake.

Crude palm oil contains 600 to 1000 ppm of tocols in the form of tocopherols and tocotrienols. These palm tocols have been isolated and analyzed in the past by various chromatographic techniques such as open column chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, as well as thin-layer chromatography. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has emerged as a more advanced chromatographic technique in recent years. The tocols present in palm oil are successfully isolated using SFC. Identification of these tocols is supported by various spectroscopic techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectrometry.

The aim of this study is to find relation of maternal vitamin E and progression of children asthma. This is a review article searched in data base include Google, PubMed, SID, Irandoc, Scopus and up-to-date. Key words for search include maternal vitamin e, asthma, children and pediatric. There was not limitation time for search. A few articles found in our search. Some of them were cohort studies. A few researches were about vitamin e only and a few of them evaluated vitamin e with other vitamins in clinical trial studies. Because the articles were heterogenic, we could not do a meta-analysis. Often articles showed the vitamin e improved clinical manifestations of asthma and or lung function in spirometry tests. A few articles revealed no any effect of prenatal vitamin e during pregnancy on children wheezing or asthma. Vitamin e has not any serious side effects. ...

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an Andean pseudocereal that has acquired a commercial interest in recent decades, partly due to its nutritional characteristics and lack of gluten. Controlled seed germination has been used to improve the nutritional value of different species for human consumption, besides reducing anti-nutritional factors. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are important in a balanced diet, particularly ω-3 fatty acids whose ratio to ω-6 fatty acids has been reported to be increased by germination. However, the fatty acid profile of the seeds of each species and variety behaves differently during germination, and few studies have addressed quinoa and its different cultivars. In this study, four Peruvian quinoa cultivars from Puno and Cusco were germinated in the dark at 25 °C and analysed for their fatty acid profile after 24 and 48 h by GC-FID. The lipids were extracted by a mixture of hexane/isopropanol and the determination of tocopherols was performed by HPLC with a fluorescence detector. The content of lipids and tocopherols was carried out until 72 h. A slight increase in lipid content was found in three of the cultivars, which may be because of better extractability of quinoa seed lipids caused by germination. The highest average lipid content was presented by INIA 415 ‘Roja Pasankalla’ (5.89%, db), which did not vary significantly during germination the first 48 h of germination. The lipid content of the quinoa seeds tested did not vary between 48 and 72 h. With regard to the fatty acid profile, linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids were predominant for all cultivars. The INIA 420 ‘Negra Collana’ cultivar had the highest content of linoleic acid (56.24  +- 2.22%, on average). The PUFAs content increased mostly during germination and the ω-6/ω-3 ratio improved for all cultivars, even for ‘Roja Pasankalla’ which showed the slightest variations in its fatty acid profile. The increase of the concentration of ω-3 benefited notably INIA 420 ‘Negra Collana’, although the cultivar with the best ratio ω-6/ω-3 and α-tocopherol was ‘Amarilla de Maranganí’ after 48 h of germination. Only the ‘Blanca de Juli’ white seed cultivar show a decrease in total tocopherol content at the end of germination (from 1354 to 1011 ppm). The germination of quinoa seeds for 48 h has improved the profile of fatty acids and α-tocopherol content, although it is necessary to investigate the effect of storage on the metabolism of each fatty acid to understand new ways of optimising this process.

The decomposition of peroxidized lipids of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) has been suggested to be involved in
atherosclerosis. In this study, an in vitro system with 13-hydroperoxylinoleic acid (13-HPODE) was used to
determine the effects of antioxidants on its decomposition. Decomposition of 13-HPODE was not affected by
a-tocopherol, several other antioxidants, or antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, the inclusion of a-tocopherol during
the decomposition of 13-HPODE resulted in an accumulation of aldehydes. Further oxidation of aldehydes to
carboxylic acids by a number of oxidases was prevented by a-tocopherol. Conversely, the formation of carboxylic
acids may be conducive to plaque stabilization via immunomodulation, rapid degradation, and by calcium
sequestration. Thus, the inhibition of formation of carboxylic acids could be a serious deleterious effect of antioxidant
treatment. In contrast, a-keto acids, like pyruvic acid, promoted the conversion of 13-HPODE to
13-hydroxylinoleic acid (13-HODE) by readily undergoing decarboxylation into acetate. These observations
suggest that agents that promote the reduction of lipid peroxides into lipid hydroxides could be far more effective
in treating cardiovascular diseases as opposed a-tocopherol–like antioxidants that could affect additional steps in
