the Middle Passage

During an Anglo-American literature course, we especially focused on the Middle Passage and its authors, which led to this essay were I briefly explore Cugoano's and Equiano's autobiographies, along with Hayden's and Boone's poems. These texts are looked at through the lenses of various studies, above all Gilroy's and Du Bois'.

La première partie de la séquence sera consacrée à l'analyse d'un des textes fondateurs des études postcoloniales, le fameux "Les subalternes peuvent-elles parler?" de Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Nous exposerons les points principaux de l'argument de Spivak afin de rendre compte de la complexité du constat tragique qu'elle lègue aux études postcoloniales : Le (et à plus forte raison la) subalterne ne peut pas parler. Dans la seconde partie de la séquence, nous nous pencherons sur l'une des voies empruntées par les études décoloniales pour affronter le défi légué par Spivak: l'afropessimisme tel qu'il est articulé par Fred Moten et Jared Sexton. Pour finir, nous mettrons en évidence la matrice conceptuelle schellingienne qui innerve la voie de la "négativité radicale" empruntée par cette branche des black studies, en esquissant une relecture postcoloniale des Recherches philosophiques sur l'essence de la liberté humaine.

Globalized Peripheries
New Approaches to the Atlantic World 1680–1850

Possible topics include but are not limited to:
• The exchange and movement of goods and people across
the oceans
• Merchants and merchant networks
• Consumption and material culture
• (Proto-)Industrial production and development
• Theories of political economy
• (Religious) Minorities as agents of trade
• Gender from a global perspective
• Theoretical and methodological approaches to “Atlantic
History” and/or “centers” and “peripheries”
Although the conference has no specific regional focus, we explicitly invite papers focused on the following “peripheries” of the Atlantic World and/or its historiography:
• Central and Eastern Europe
• West and West Central Africa
• South Asia

Proposals of ca. 300 words as well as a short CV (max. 1 page) should be sent to: globalized-peripheries@europa-uni.de

"Nuggets from the Night" is an anthology of poetic expressions of over 200 poems written over fifteen years. It covers a wide range of topics, including prayer, social justice, love, solitude, politics, society, the world, slavery, lynching, self, meditation, existence, race, incarceration, criminalization, attraction, theology, spirituality, struggle, and victory. The poems are arranged to provide solace in the current climate of COVID-19. The goal of "Nuggets from the Night" is to help the reader find consolation and discover the value of looking within against the angst of COVID-19. Furthermore, the reader will find comfort in the chapter entitled "Meditations." Nuggets From The Night: An Anthology of Poetic Expression provides a critical socio-poetic narrative of the Transatlantic Slave Trade explored in "A Panegyric." Besides, as part of its central gems, the reader will explore and experience insights expressed in poetic forms.
