ABSTRACT This article verifies the hysteresis phenomenon in heat–voltage curves of polypyrrole-coated electrospun nanofibrous and regular fibrous mats. A third-order polynomial model fits the heat–voltage data better than a second-order polynomial model. It was also observed that the hysteresis loop area of nanofibrous and regular fibrous mats increases with decreasing fiber diameter. Moreover, the curvature of the hysteresis loops is significantly affected by the fiber diameter. In fact, the slope of the curvatures increases with decreasing fiber diameter.

This paper deals with the evolution of nominal expressions with prenominal possessives in Romance languages. Until now, the prevalent view has been that their historical development follows one of the two diachronic paths: either they stop co-occurring with determiners (French, Spanish) or they start requiring their presence (European Portuguese). One common analysis associates the first case with a transition from a modifier to a determiner semantics of possessives and the second with a retention of a modifier semantics (e.g. Alexiadou 2004). With undernutrition contributing to one third of all child deaths, improving nutrition is a precondition for accelerating progress towards other MDG targets. While the role of technical interventions such as micronutrient fortification and supplementation in reducing morbidity and mortality has been well documented, evidence to support more comprehensive multi-sectoral approaches remains inconclusive. This chapter aims to evaluate the impact of an integrated food- and livelihood-based model on nutrition-related outcomes in rural western Kenya. Purpose: The shift to pluralistic agricultural extension services in Malawi sets the context for this paper’s focus on the private service provider (PSP) delivery model. The role of the PSP, the capacity and willingness of smallholder farmers to pay for PSP services, and the challenges experienced in implementing this approach are examined. Design/Methodology/Approach: Interviews with approximately 50 PSPs and nearly 100 stakeholders from the public, private and non governmental sectors across Malawi were supplemented with focus group discussions with 30 farmer groups in Malawi representing close to 600 smallholders. Qualitative data was analysed for themes and issues around willingness to pay and capacity to pay. Findings: The results reveal the complexity of shifting to a user pays system and that PSPs play important roles in delivering services that respond to farmers’ needs. This study uses new data on coups d’état and elections to document a striking development: whereas the vast majority of successful coups before 1991 installed durable rules, the majority of coups after that have been followed by competitive elections. The article argues that after the Cold War, international pressure influenced the consequences of coups. In the post-Cold War era, countries that were most dependent on Western aid were the first to embrace competitive elections after their coups. This theory also helps explain the pronounced decline in the number of coups since 1991. While the coup d’état has been (and still is) the single most important factor leading to the downfall of democratic governments, these findings indicate that the new generation of coups has been far less harmful for democracy than their historical predecessors.
