The negative externalities of the massive use of private transport have been widely studied and verified by the scientific academy. These studies have focused either on the environmental or the social issues. However, the use of the automobile is widely accepted and even vindicated among a high number of citizens. This dilemma implies having to analyze the reasons of its usage alongside with the perceptions that their users have. This paper analyses the individual motivations for using private transport to reach a single nodal and suburban point inside Barcelona’s Metropolitan Region: the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). The analysis has used quantitative methodology with data gathered by the Mobility Survey of the UAB and also qualitative analysis. Only quantifying the use of private transport and understanding the reasons for their utilization, will we be able to establish dissuasive politics against its use

Beside education and research, universities are increasingly recognised as important actors in innovation and regional development. At the same time, in a globalised context, internationalisation and quality of education and research are complementary to each other. Accordingly, there is a need for universities to implement strategies to promote their international engagement. Do regional mission and internationalisation appear paradoxical? This paper explores the phenomena through a case study of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the region of Barcelona city and Catalonia’s AP-7/B-30 industrial agglomeration, by analysing UAB´s infrastructure, capabilities and its collaborations with external stakeholders such as firms, public institutions and communities. As a top ranked institution in Spain and Europe, UAB has a strong point of view towards the importance of internationalisation focusing on three central actions of mobility, collaboration, and attraction of talent. UAB also aims to contribute to innovation and regional development beyond its educational and research activities. The role of UAB in innovation and regional development has been strengthened especially since 2008 when Barcelona city expressed its particular interests in engaging universities as a joint strategy to improve the international competitiveness of the economy and later in 2009 with UAB´s achievement of Campus of International Excellence. The study reveals that UAB has a strong impact by its intensive knowledge spillovers, technology transfer, and several projects developed to solve regional public concerns. Lastly, UAB is increasingly considered as a key stakeholder in negotiating and decision-making process for innovation and regional development.

Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa sobre o processo de gestão de cursos à distância no contexto dos polos de apoio presencial da Universidade Aberta do Brasil, identificando dificuldades e desafios desses polos nas suas práticas de gestão administrativa, financeira e pedagógica. Os métodos utilizados na presente pesquisa foram a pesquisa bibliográfica e o estudo de caso. Percebe-se do estudo, que ainda existem muitos desafios para impulsionar progressivamente a qualidade da EaD e que o polo UAB é um elemento fundamental, porquanto ser nele baseado o suporte para encontros presenciais e outras atividades necessárias à prática de estudo. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a research on the process of managing distance education courses in the context of the pole-face support from the Open University of Brazil, identifying difficulties and challenges of these poles in their practices of administrative, financial and pedagogical. The methods used in this research were a literature review and case study. It is observed from the study that there are still many challenges to progressively boost the quality of distance education and the polo UAB is a key element, since being based support for physical meetings and other necessary activities to study practice it.

The “Bastida Project” has been led by an interdisciplinary team of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2008. La Bastida, the archaeological site after which it is named, has a long research history that has made it one of the benchmarks for knowledge on Europe’s Bronze Age. The excavations carried out at various sectors of the site, as well as the specialized investigations of the last ten years have enabled the identification of three major occupation phases. The results confirm the importance of the settlement in its historical context.

Desde 2013 la UE ha impulsado el llamado Cuarto Paquete Ferroviario, que implica la liberalización no sólo de los servicios comerciales o de larga distancia, sino también de los urbanos, suburbanos y regionales categorizados generalmente como obligaciones de servicio público. En este artículo analizo los efectos de la liberalización de las OSP en términos de eficiencia, basándome en la experiencia hasta la fecha en Reino Unido y Alemania, entre otras. Los resultados de la investigación revelan que las ganancias de eficiencia atribuibles a la competencia por el mercado son mayores a los costes de coordinación. No obstante, la densidad y los rendimientos de escala deben tenerse en cuenta al diseñar las rutas objeto de OSP y sus respectivos términos contractuales. Since 2013 the EU has pushed forward the so called Fourth Railway Package, which implies the liberalisation not only of commercial or long-distance services, but also of urban, sub-urban and regional services commonly recognized as public service obligations. In this paper I discuss the effects of PSO liberalisation in terms of efficiency, based on experience to date in United Kingdom and Germany among others. The research results reveal that efficiency gains attributable to market-driven competition for the services are greater than coordination costs. Nonetheless, density and scale returns ought to be taken account when designing PSO routes and its contractual terms.

A Educação a Distância (EaD) vem sendo amplamente estudada no campo da Educação. Além disso, vem integrando políticas públicas educacionais, como o Sistema Universidade Aberta do Brasil (UAB). Nesse contexto, neste trabalho, nosso objeto de estudo consiste em um Projeto Pedagógico de Curso (PPC) de um curso de Letras/Espanhol a distância, de uma Universidade Pública, ofertado pela UAB. Assim, objetivamos analisar um PPC de um curso a distância de Letras/Espanhol da UAB, de acordo com os Referenciais de Qualidade para a Educação Superior a Distância (2007), no que se refere aos distanciamentos e aproximações entre os dois documentos. Fundamentamo-nos teoricamente em trabalhos que versam sobre a EaD (MILL, 2018, 2016; BORGES, 2015) e, ainda, consideramos a legislação acerca dessa modalidade educacional no contexto brasileiro. Nossa metodologia é de base qualitativa, de tipo descritivo-explicativo (SILVEIRA, CÓRDOVA, 2009). De acordo com o documento oficial (BRASIL, 2007), são oito elementos que constituem a qualidade da EaD no Ensino Superior, sendo elas: (1) Concepção de educação e currículo no processo de ensino e aprendizagem; (2) Sistemas de Comunicação; (3) Material didático; (4) Avaliação; (5) Equipe multidisciplinar; (6) infraestrutura de apoio; (7) Gestão Acadêmico-Administrativa; (8) Sustentabilidade financeira. As análises demonstram que todos esses elementos estão presentes no PPC estudado, com exceção da infraestrutura de apoio. Essa constatação justifica-se na medida em que não há menção a um polo presencial no PPC analisado.
