: A state-of-the-art Peterbilt 385 tractor was specified and procured for a multiphase program designed to develop a fuel cell powered class 8 tractor. Five fuels were used in baseline engine exhaust emissions testing of the tractor and for baseline performance determinations of the vehicle. The alternative fuels (a 820 biodiesel blend, synthetic FischerTropsch diesel) and a ultra low sulfur CARS equivalent diesel fuel achieved significantly lower emissions test results than the baseline United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification diesel fuel. A petroleum JP-8 aviation turbine fuel demonstrated higher unburned hydrocarbons than the EPA certification fuel but this is thought to be due primarily to the low viscosity of the JP-8 interfering with fuel injector efficiency. Discusses work completed at Cardinal River Coals in Canada to improve the existing oil analysis condition monitoring program being undertaken for wheel motors. Oil analysis results from a fleet of 55 haul truck wheel motors were analyzed along with their respective failures and repairs over a nine‐year period. Detailed data cleaning procedures were applied to prepare data for modeling. In addition, definitions of failure and suspension were clarified depending on equipment condition at replacement. Using the proportional hazards model approach, the key condition variables relating to failures were found from among the 19 elements monitored, plus sediment and viscosity. Those key variables were then incorporated into a decision model that provided an unambiguous and optimal recommendation on whether to continue operating a wheel motor or to remove it for overhaul on the basis of data obtained from an oil sample. There is a significant amount of goods that are transported using tractor trailers. Most high-value products, such as electronics, highly perishable goods like fruits and vegetables and most retail consumer products, are shipped using trucks in North America. It is therefore important to measure and quantify the levels of vibration that occur inside this mode of transport as it pertains to damage. Vibration levels inside a tractor-trailer are a function of the road surface, the speed of the vehicle, the type of suspension and the structure of the trailer. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of vibration as a function of trailer suspension at normal operating speeds in commercially used truck equipment, over 16000km of road surfaces in North America. Overloading phenomenon is a common view in Indonesia, accused of early damage on pavement. This thesis is trying to evaluate the differences between two conditions, first condition as if overloading truck bring 5%,10%, 15%,20%, 25% and 30% more load, and the second condition as if applied zero overloading and used 6-axle-truck to accommodate unloaded logistics. Liddle’s formula will be used with the k factor 1 for tandem axle, 0.086 for tandem, and 0.031 for tridem axle. Service life significantly differ between the first and the second condition.

Resumo Levantamentos bibliográficos apontaram que o mundo já assistiu dez greves de caminhoneiros desde a primeira delas, ocorrida em 1932, nos Estados Unidos da América. A que aconteceu mais recentemente no Brasil, em 2018, foi a penúltima e produziu uma crise no abastecimento com o bloqueio de diversas estradas por meio de barricadas com caminhões. Sua motivação publicizada foi o aumento do preço do óleo diesel e sua integração nos custos dos fretes, cuja cotação era tabelada pelo governo na época. A greve durou nove dias (21/05 a 30/05) e envolveu profissionais de todo o país, até um acordo que satisfez os termos dos manifestantes. Neste trabalho foi pesquisada a imagem construída publicamente sobre os caminhoneiros grevistas. O estudo incidiu sobre comentários de internautas realizados em sites de notícia e foi composto por 50 postagens, classificadas por meio das categorias /caminhoneiros/, /governo/ e /sociedade/. Algumas representações sociais preliminares dão conta de que ou os caminhoneiros foram considerados ou (1) "herois" desinteressados por se levantarem contra o governo corrupto ou (2) "vilões" corporativistas por repassarem seu prejuízo para o sistema tributário brasileiro. Nas argumentações dos internautas, entreve-se certa "economia espontânea", tal qual ocorre com a sociologia espontânea, a segunda sendo a interpretação do senso comum sobre fenômenos sociais. Essa economia espontânea se caracterizou, nas ideias expressas na nossa análise, pela interpretação das ações dos motoristas baseada no elencamento da correlação determinística (muitas vezes espúria) de variáveis de origem econométricas. Abstract: Today, computer control systems have achieved a highest position of their applicability through large scale industries to smaller activities such as controlling a movement of an object. Especially many researches are being carried out to develop control systems to automate the movements of vehicles as it is performed by a human being. This paper presents control systems to control the backing up motion of a truck and trailer vehicle into a particular location such as a loading dock. Salient feature of these systems is that it can be applied to any vehicle system which has a trailer attached to it. Two separate control systems are used to achieve the desired goal. In the first approach, the system uses fuzzy logic while the second approach uses an artificial neural network for the same purpose. The proposed controllers are tested for different initial positions and orientations of the truck and the trailer using a simulation model implemented with the MATLAB tool boxes. Comparisons of the results obtained are also presented. Under the conditions considered for the simulation it is observed that the fuzzy logic based control system is capable of controlling the vehicle within a larger area than that of the neural network based control system.

The highway's exit of the A12 near Woerden (The Netherlands) was reconstructed with a basal reinforced piled embankment. Traffic loads on the asphalt, load distribution and deformations are being meas- ured. Furthermore, optic fibres were used to measure the strains in both the geosynthetic reinforcement (GR) and the piles. Measurements were carried out every 10 minutes to study the development of the distribution of the permanent load. Additionally, high frequency measurements (500 Hz) were carried out during truck passages. The meas- urements were compared with predictions of EBGEO/CUR and its modified version, with an inverse triangular load distribution (Van Eekelen et al., 2012a, b and c). The inverse triangular load distribution and the resulting GR strains agree better with the field measurements than the equally distributed or triangular distributed load of respectively BS8006 or EBGEO/CUR. Perancangan tata letak gudang memiliki tujuan untuk dapat meminimasi biaya material handling. PT. KHI Pipe Industries merupakan salah satu perusahaan yang menghasilkan pipa electric resistant welded (ERW). Pada gudang area blok M di PT. KHI masih belum mempunyai aturan penempatan pipa ke dalam rak. Hal ini menyebabkan gerak perpindahan material handling bertambah dan akan mempengaruhi besarnya total jarak dan biaya material handling. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (i) mengetahui usulan tata letak menggunakan metode dedicated storage dan genetic algorithm, (ii) mengetahui total jarak dan biaya material handling pada layout eksisting dan usulan, (iii) serta menentukan usulan tata letak gudang pipa ERW terbaik. Penelitian ini menyelesaikan masalah gudang yang memiliki 21 jenis pipa dan 21 rak. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, metode genetic algorithm memberikan hasil layout terbaik dengan biaya material handling paling kecil dibandingkan dengan layout eksisting dan layout menggunakan metode dedicated storage. Pada layout terbaik biaya sebesar Rp. 54.596.231 dengan jarak sebesar 4713,90 m dengan persentasi penurunan jarak sebesar 1518,1 meter atau sebesar 24,36% dan penurunan biaya sebesar Rp. 17.538.300 atau sebesar 24,31% lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan layout eksisting.

The incidence of fire in heavy trucks has been shown to be about ten times higher under crash conditions than occurs in passenger vehicles. Fuel tank protection testing defined in SAE standard J703 was originally issued in 1954 and presently echoes federal regulations codified in 49 CFR 393. These tests do not reflect dynamic impact conditions representative of those that can be expected by heavy trucks on the road today. Advanced virtual testing of current and alternative fuel tank designs and locations under example impact conditions is reported. Virtual testing methods can model vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to fixed object impacts. These results can then be utilized to evaluate and refine fuel tank protection system design approaches.

This analysis briefly identifies the state of Intermodal Freight Transport in Albania from a perspective in facilitating road traffic on the main axes in the central area of Albania. This study examines the possibilities of planning the location of the dry port in the interior of the territorial space of the central area of Albania. Finally, through this Study, we present the orientations and lessons to be learned from the best practices for the promotion of intermodal freight transport. The overall objective of our study is to contribute to the long-term sustainable development of logistics infrastructure and multimodal transport in Albania and to achieve the expected results as provided in the National Sectorial Transport Strategy 2016-2020, under Strategic Priority 1. The specific objective of this study is to reduce the congestion of traffic volumes on the central road axes, to reduce travel time, to reduce transport costs, to minimize environmental pollution from truck gases, and to increase safety through the development of Intermodal Transport shifting freight flows from road transport to rail transport.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or offthe- shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shoveltruck system. O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência do transporte na ocorrência de lesões, em carcaças de bovinos abatidos no Pantanal Sul Matogrossense, por meio da quantificação do número e do tamanho das lesões, assim como a localização da freqüência de ocorrência das lesões nos principais cortes comerciais padronizados para o mercado interno. Do total de 121 carcaças avaliadas, foi observado que 102 (84,3%) tiveram uma ou mais lesões, totalizando 270 lesões que resultaram na remoção de 56,1kg de carne, com média geral de 0,5kg por animal ou 0,6kg por animal, considerando-se apenas os animais que tiveram lesões. A freqüência de lesões em carcaças de bovinos evidenciou diferença significativa de acordo com as condições de transporte. As maiores proporções de lesões foram encontradas em animais submetidos ao transporte rodoviário por mais de uma hora e distâncias maiores que 70km, sendo grande parte em estradas não-pavimentadas. Shovels, haul trucks and conveyors are used in surface mines for material haulage of which trucks are have been most widely used. This paper presents a comprehensive comparison study in terms of the operating efficiency of trucks and conveyors as applied in surface mining operations. Three key time usage metrics are used to assess the efficiency of both haulage systems namely: Utilised Time, Operating Time and Valuable Operating Time. The notion that measurement of equipment performance should focus on a multi instead of a singlefactor approach is proposed. Comparison of the two systems based on these measures indicates that although trucks lend themselves to high flexibility and lower upfront capital outlay, conveyor haulage offers a better measure of performance on all the three metrics of measuring equipment performance. In this project we investigate the effect of heavy-duty trucks, equipped with different Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems, on the environment and traffic flow characteristics. The sluggish dynamics of trucks whether manual or ACC that is due to their limited acceleration capabilities filter speed disturbances caused by leading vehicles and lead to beneficial effects on the environment and traffic flow characteristics. This response however may lead to higher travel times in certain situations as well as invite cut-ins from neighboring lanes causing additional disturbances. A new ACC design that is developed and experimentally tested reduces some of the negative effects of trucks in mixed traffic.

As a precursor to the present research, Hanowski et al. [FHWA Report no. FHWA-MC-98-029. Office of Motor Carriers, Federal Highway Administration, Washington, DC, 1998] conducted a series of focus groups in which local/short haul (L/SH) drivers provided their perspective on safety issues, including fatigue, in their industry. As a follow-up to the Hanowski et al. work, the effort presented here consisted of an on-road field study where in-service L/SH trucks were instrumented with data collection equipment. Two L/SH trucking companies and 42 L/SH drivers participated in this research. The analyses focused on determining if fatigue is an issue in L/SH operations. Of primary interest were critical incidents (near-crashes) where L/SH drivers were judged to be at fault. The results of the analyses indicated that fatigue was present immediately prior to driver involvement in at-fault critical incidents. Though it is difficult to determine with certainty why fatigue was present, the results suggest that drivers' off-hours behavior likely played a significant role in the fatigue experienced on the job. Another key finding of this research is that a small percentage of drivers were responsible for a majority of the critical incidents. This finding suggests that driver selection and monitoring could potentially improve safety in L/SH operations.
