Trastamara Dinasty

Desde el campo de la cultura y la política hispana, El otoño de la Edad Media en Castilla y Aragón ofrece un recorrido por los últimos años medievales en el tránsito hacia la temprana Modernidad para explicar el complejo proceso de conformación de estos reinos. Su autor, Ezequiel Borgognoni, es Doctor en Historia y Profesor de la Cátedra de Historia Medieval de la Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires. Así pues, a través de una perspectiva de larga duración, que no desdeña las vicisitudes y mutaciones que operan al nivel de la coyuntura, el libro está dividido en dos capítulos que abordan los cambios acaecidos en el espacio peninsular durante el denominado proceso de “Reconquista” llevado a cabo por los monarcas cristianos de los territorios aquí abordados.

Desde el siglo XIII se asiste a un proceso general caracterizado por la monumentalización del espacio privado privilegiado destinado a servir de enterramiento. Este proceso es común a nobles y reyes, reservándose para los segundos los espacios privilegiados de catedrales como Sevilla, Córdoba o Toledo. En este trabajo nos ocupamos de señalar los espacios de inhumación elegidos por los monarcas Trastámara desde la creación de la primera capilla-panteón dinástica en la catedral de Toledo a la última capilla funeraria de la casa Trastámara, esta vez un espacio independiente junto a la nueva catedral de Granada.

In 1369 the Castilian Civil War came to an end when Pedro I was murdered by his stepbrother, Enrique II, the first king of the Trastámara dynasty. The importance of the artistic patronage of Pedro I and his courtesans is well known, but 1369 seems to stand as a historiographical watershed, as though the death of the king brought to an end a period of experimentation, interconnections and creativity.This article analyzes the architecture and artistic practices in Castile during the decades immediately following the end of the war, a key moment in the articulation of a Castilian courtly architecture. It considers how the artistic experimentation of the previous decades, which includes the reigns of Pedro I and his father Alfonso XI, was continued and revisited during the early years of the Trastámaras dynasty, not only by the kings themselves but also by the nobility.

If we want to know and be able to understand how medieval men and women perceived, felt and thought their world, we have to turn our gaze to their festivities and the role that the senses played in them. Spaces for the exchange and circulation of a wide range of sacred, profane and magical practices, they presented themselves as unique opportunities for the manifestation of power by kings and nobles, especially in the late middle Ages. From the thirteenth century, the records of the different court’ celebrations show a growing artistic spectacularity associated with the intention of transmitting and reinforcing official ideology by evoking images aimed at making an impact and generating a strong sense of identity. In the fifthteen century, this can be clearly seen during the reign of John II (1406-1454) of Castile, signified by conflicts with the nobility, as well as by the war against the Moors of Granada. At this juncture there was a renaissance of the ideals of chivalrous and warrior’s life reflected in the multiplication of the organization of tournaments, jousting, reeds and other games. On this basis, through the contributions of the History of the senses – a transdisciplinary perspective that brings together the contributions of History, as well as Anthropology – we will analyse the Chronicle of the Falconer of John II, by Pedro Carillo de Huete, in order to identify and analyse how vision, taste, hearing, touch and smell intervened in the configuration of a particular festive sensory model.

En esta ocasión, me propuse analizar diferentes obras producidas en el marco de esta diatriba, teniendo como escenario la Corte de Juan II, en las cuales pretendo rastrear cuestiones relevantes en este contexto como: las diferentes imágenes que se construyen sobre la mujer en torno a la Querella de las Mujeres, el papel de María de Aragón como reina consorte y matrocinadora de textos dedicados a ella que empujen la balanza a favor de su género así como minucias propias de las intrigas cortesanas presentes en el gobierno de su esposo castellano. Los mismos pueden comprender un carácter difamatorio de las mujeres como el Corbachio de Alfonso Martínez de Talavera, o de defensa de las mismas como Triunfo de las Donas de Juan Rodríguez del Padrón, y Virtuosas e claras mujeres de Álvaro de Lun; los cuales componen un pequeño muestreo con respecto a la profusa producción literaria sobre estas cuestiones

A través de un recorrido por el arte y la cultura Tudor, se planteará la campaña dinástica gestada por una reina que había sido educada para servir los intereses de su linaje. El destino de Catalina de Aragón estuvo ligado a la Monarquía Tudor desde su primera infancia. A pesar de no recibir una formación de estado como lo hiciera su hermano el infante Juan, las infantas sí fueron instruidas por los humanistas más prestigiosos de la corte de Isabel y Fernando. Las ideas renacentistas estaban dando forma a un nuevo modelo de reina consorte y los Reyes Católicos fueron pioneros en la formación de sus cuatro hijas siguiendo el nuevo modelo.

Al cumplir la edad establecida en los acuerdos matrimoniales, Catalina viajó a Inglaterra para contraer matrimonio con el príncipe Arturo. Tras enviudar y después de diversos avatares que retrasaron su compromiso con el príncipe Enrique, Catalina tomó las riendas de la embajada de la Monarquía Hispánica. Por primera vez, una mujer era acreditada como embajadora y su trabajo en favor de su compromiso matrimonial culminó con sus esponsales y coronación junto a Enrique VIII. La defensa de los intereses aragoneses continuó durante la primera parte de su reinado ejerciendo una gran influencia sobre la política internacional del joven rey. Durante este periodo, Catalina mostró una línea de firme defensa de los intereses del rey Fernando y un rotundo rechazo hacia el acercamiento de Inglaterra a Francia.

A comienzos de la década de los años veinte del siglo XVI, los esfuerzos de la reina se tornaron hacia la candidatura de su hija al torno de San Jorge. Era consciente de que no le daría más hijos al rey y confiaba plenamente en que la princesa María era la única heredera legítima. Para ello, ideó un plan educativo sin precedentes para instruirle con preceptos ligados a la cultura renacentista. Se puede destacar que fue enviada a ejercer su autoridad en la corte de Gales, aprendió varios idiomas o que fue educada en diversas artes. Como verdadera revolución, Catalina cuidó de que se diseñaran diversos manuales que enseñaran a María no solo a ser una mujer con un comportamiento ejemplar sino una gobernante justa y eficaz.

Royal palaces and dynastic memory: the Alcázar of Segovia The Segovian alcázar became the dynastic space of the last Trastámara with the monarch Enrique IV. The memory of the kings Trastámara of the XV century was dispersed between Toledo, Burgos or Guadalupe related to the funerary space, but this memory was centralized, planned and collected behind the walls of the new representative rooms of the Segovian fortress. The reforms carried out during his tumultuous reign aim to highlight the memory of his ancestors: Catalina de Lancaster, Enrique III and Juan II, placing himself as the last link in this dynastic chain in a moment of civil war for the Castilian throne.

En los últimos cuarenta años, antropólogos e historiadores se han abocado al estudio de “viejos” objetos a través de nuevas perspectivas analíticas, como es el caso de las distintas festividades y el modelo sensorial que representan. Una comprensión global de la Edad Media no puede realizarse sin atender al papel esencial que los sentidos han tenido en ella. A través de éstos, los hombres y las mujeres han experimentado y aprehendido su realidad, al punto de convertirse en elementos vitales en la conformación de su identidad. Sobre esta base, la hipótesis que articula el presente trabajo sostiene que en las fiestas organizadas y celebradas en torno al Condestable Miguel Lucas de Iranzo, la vista, la audición, el gusto, el tacto y el olfato cumplieron un papel fundamental en la representación que de sí misma y de su mundo tenía la sociedad de Jaén.

In the last forty years, anthropologists and historians have gone back to an “old” study subject through new historiographical perspectives, like the different festivities that took place in the Middle Ages and the sensorial model they represent. A global understanding could not realize without regard to the essential role that the senses have played in it. Women and men have experienced and apprehended their reality through them, becoming vital elements in shaping their identity. About this statement, the hypothesis that articulates this work holds that in feasts that took place around the Condestable Miguel Lucas de Iranzo, sight, audition, taste, touch and smell, played a key role in the representation that Jaén had about its world.

The objective of the article is to analyze the impact of the War of the Two Peters in the medieval town of Guardamar. For that purpose, the historical records that contextualize the armed conflict are established and the development  of the war is explained by analyzing the main warlike actions that took place in Guardamar. Likewise, the consequences of the War of the Two Peters in the history of Guardamar are studied.

The relationship between the Papacy and the Hispanic monarchy constitutes a very fertile field for the research about the development of these two powers, in the origins of the modern Europe. Beyond the Church-State dialectic, the new historiographical trends are exploring the forms of association and the intertwining of these two institutions that were needed in the spiritual governance of the kingdoms. However, they experienced phenomena of cooperation, conflict or mimetic transfer, during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs (1474-1516). This article describes the fields of analysis addressed in the recent years, focusing on diplomatic transformations, the reform of church structures, and the redefinition of the Christianity boundaries.
