However well intentioned, orphanage tourism locates and commodifies children as objects of rescue fantasies, objectified as adorable innocents, waiting to be loved by enthusiastic westerners. Cambodia offers holidaymakers an exotic destination in which to act out and indulge their contemporary fantasies of compassion and care. Through explorations of both popular cultural representations of the ideal vacation and the orphanage tourist industry - as well as my own observations and interviews with orphanage tourists in Siem Reap - I will reveal how closely notions of the ideal vacation parallel orphanage tourism in Cambodia. As part of a wider qualitative study of the volunteering experience, this paper seeks to critique the problematic relationship between a touristic experience and the needs of Cambodia’s poor children

Chaiwat Satha-Anand has become an extremely well-known public intellectual and Muslim scholar in Thailand.  This essay describes the biographical and intellectual influences in Chaiwat's career, including the influence of Leo Strauss.  Chaiwat's ability to synthesize the Straussian project with a political science that is both descriptive and normative has enabled him to become a significant scholar and political activist in Thai society.

From 1996 to 2006, Nepal encountered an armed conflict of Maoists against the government. The aim of the conflict was believed to end social exclusion and unequal laws. The conflict with the death of more than 13,000 people ended with an agreement in 2006 through intervention of Nepal’s own political and civil society leaders. The nonviolent people’s movement in 2006 was instrumental in accelerating the transition to peace. Maoist combatants were peacefully dissolved. Karl Marx predicts that an advanced capitalist society would end up with class polarization between the very small number of the rich capitalist class and the very large number of the poor proletariat class. There seems to be no place for the modern middle class who sells their labours for wages or incomes but has different ways of life and a better standard of living than the working class. However, the social reality after Marx's time seems to contradict his prediction – the quite stable existence of the modern middle class makes Marx's prediction untrue. Some scholars who claim themselves as Marxists would argue that the modern middle class should be counted as the proletariat class, and so, Marx's prediction still holds in the present time. The policy of “Four Modernizations”, declared by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, aimed to open China to the outside world. The Chinese government not only has tried to attract foreign investment into China, but also has supported Chinese enterprises to make outward foreign direct investment (FDI) to seek experience overseas. From 1975 to 2002, the amount of Chinese investment in Thailand was the largest in ASEAN countries. Moreover, Chinese foreign investment in Thailand is determined by the so-called “Go-Out Strategy” involving the investment in foreign countries. Motives behind her investment in Thailand are to find market and resources there. These are China’s significant mechanisms in expanding her investments. Thailand has great potential in geo-economic aspects as investment base facilitating the distribution of Chinese merchandise to ASEAN and world market.

Nowadays, many traditional commercial communities are required to develop themselves in order to compete against capitalism. Some communities that did not adjust themselves toward those changes no longer exist. Other communities have adjusted themselves, particularly in response to tourism. However, in many cases the process of becoming a tourism destination has caused the relationship between architecture and the ways of life in these traditional commercial communities to dramatically change, and thus lose their identity. This study investigated the contributions of cultural intelligence (CQ) on job performance. Communication effectiveness and job stress were proposed as two competencies that mediated the linkage between cultural intelligence and job performance. Survey data were collected from 427 frontline employees working for domestic chain hotels in Thailand. The results computed from a partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis showed that communication effectiveness and job stress mediated the linkage between cultural intelligence and job performance of the frontline hotel employees. The results also showed that communication effectiveness negatively and partially mediated the relationship between CQ and job stress, and job stress positively and partially mediated the relationship between communication effectiveness and job performance of the frontline hotel employees. This research investigated the contribution of team trust to team conflict and team innovation in the restaurant business. In particular, this research extended prior research by exploring the influence of team trust in the area of cross-cultural teams. Moreover, this research advanced prior research by examining the moderating effect of team task interdependence that might possibly influence the impact of team conflict on team innovation. Survey data were collected from 103 restaurant multicultural teams in the five most visited tourist cities in Thailand, namely Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya, Krabi, and Phuket. One of the key challenges for Thai education since the last century has been to produce citizens who are able to think for themselves and who can contribute to the common good of society. The past two decades have seen a growing interest in innovative education methods and the establishment of Thai schools with progressive educational philosophy and pedagogical approach potentially more capable of developing citizens with critical thinking skills and higher awareness of social problems than that in mainstream schools. The purpose of this research is to introduce the Japanese way of molding quality people and how it can be applied to Thailand. This is for the development of Thailand’s human resources as well as for its economic development. This study focuses on 3 topics: 1. Japanese perspectives on Thai people, focusing on appropriate behaviors for a harmonious coexistence in society, 2 Japanese based expectations concerning appropriate behavior for a harmonious existence in society through material taught in Moral Education and books on manners, and 3. Pakistan is home to multiple types of complex conflict ranging from sectarian, political, religious extremism to ethnic fanaticism. The weaponization of communities, the transformation of youth to become extremists and the influx of money has aggravated the situation in most parts of Pakistan. We engage mothers of extremist youth and build their capacity in critical thinking, dialogue and community peacebuilding. Through the agency of mother we reach out to the extremist youth and help them in de-radicalization in a phased wise manner. We bring in youth from different ethnic and sectarian groups and put them together to think and act collectively to address violent extremism through non-violent ways of engaging and building networks of likeminded youth. The objectives of this study on were to analyze factors affecting the efficiency and effectiveness of the policy formation and to study the implementation of public policies related to risk reduction and management of disaster. This qualitative research consisted of analysis of documents on floods that occurred in Thailand from 1942 to 2012 and interviews of stakeholders in policy formation and policy implementation who had experience in disaster management from related government and private sectors such as the Ministry of Interior, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Royal Irrigation Department, Thai Meteorological Department, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, including experts on disaster management, representatives from the communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
