Sustainable Fishing

For those who grew up in middle Amer i ca in the last century, Chicken of the Sea might evoke white tuna fish on white bread sandwiches, maybe with a glass of milk: a nice white lunch. For some, the mention of chicken brings back racist ste reo types of African Americans through food choices. As Psyche Williams-Forson writes: "a black-faced man with large, extended red lips, was typically symbolic of how whites would ste reo type black people with food to endorse vari ous products like fried chicken. " 1 Here the transformation is: "a celebrated food of the South. .. turns into an object of ridicule and defacement. " 2 For others, chicken of the sea is just downright confusing. An infamous moment on The Newlyweds in 2003 had Jessica Simpson wondering what she is eating: "I know it's tuna, but it says chicken by the sea. Is that stupid?" 3 While Simpson had to play the role of the blond bimbo, her question for non-Americans is maybe even more hilarious than it was for those who knew the reference, bringing to mind the image of chickens strolling along "by the sea" eating tuna.

Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) or river shad is an anadromous fish species widely distributed in the North Indian Ocean, mainly in the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Hilsa is the national fish of Bangladesh and it contributes 10% of the total fish production of the country,with a market value of $1.74 billion. Hilsa also holds a very important place in the economics
of West Bengal of Indiawith 12.5% of the catch and also tops the marine capture in Myanmar. During the last two decades Hilsa production from inland waters has been stable,whereas marine yields in the BoB increased substantially. In order to sustainably manage the trans-boundary stock of Hilsa, the taxonomy, distribution, habitat,
migration patterns, population dynamics, fisheries and socio-economics aspects of the fishery have been reviewed here. To achieve a successful trans-boundary management for the Hilsa stock, complete ban on undersize fishing, well-targeted temporal and spatial bans, creation of protected areas in strategic points, incentive for Hilsa fishers and ecological restoration of Hilsa habitats and more work on technological development of Hilsa aquaculture are recommended.

Plastic Fishing or Plastic Fishery could solve the worldwide plastic waste problem in lakes, rivers, seas and oceans fast and efficient. It is really necessary to clean up the waters fast as possible because of the microplastic pollution. The world do not really need new extra ships and wasting again resources like metals and plastics for this. The solution is to repair, recycle and upcycle old or current ships. Small and large ships such as boats, container ships and cruise ships could take a lot of plastic along their way, especially as many of them drive along coast with lots of plastic waste. Most of the worldwide ships could be upgraded in just one year! The Greenhouse Ship and Recycling Ship project introduced this new form of plastic fishing by upgrading new and old boats or ships with plastic fishing nets on the sides. The plastic fishery can become a complete new market and give the plastic waste a better value worldwide, in the end all would win. Humanity would profit, so like the nature with all their life forms, the poorest who collect plastic waste to survive, the sustainable fishery and sustainable shipping industry - who really will do something for the climate protection, nature conservation and environmental protection. Plastic fishers and other new jobs in this relation could be created with a worldwide plastic fishing market. It is not just a chance, it has really big potential and will create a lot of opportunities for existing companies, branches and industries.
