Morphology and anatomy of caulinar axes, lycophylls and sporangia of Phlegmariurus phylicifolius: a contribution to the systematics of Neotropical Lycopodiaceae. The genus Phlegmariurus is the only genus of Lycopodiaceae with the species grouped in 22 informal groups. Species level relationships within Phlegmariurus are poorly understood and their circumscriptions require a thorough molecular and morphological review. A detailed study of morphology and anatomy of caulinar axes, lycophylls and sporangia of Phlegmariurus phylicifolius was carried out in order to contribute to the elucidation of species circumscription in the informal group Phlegmariurus phlegmaria. Chili pepper (Capsicum annum L.) is an important economic crop that is severely destroyed by the filamentous oomycete Phytophthora capsici. Little is known about this pathogen in key chili pepper farms in Punjab province, Pakistan. We investigated the genetic diversity of P. capsici strains using standard taxonomic and molecular tools, and characterized their colony growth patterns as well as their disease severity on chili pepper plants under the greenhouse conditions. Phylogenetic analysis based on ribosomal DNA (rDNA), β-tubulin and translation elongation factor 1α loci revealed divergent evolution in the population structure of P. capsici isolates. The mean oospore diameter of mating type A1 isolates was greater than that of mating type A2 isolates. Studies on reproductive aspects, spore morphology and ultrastructure of Lycopodiaceae are not very common in the scientific literature, and constitute essential information to support taxonomic and systematic relationships among the group. In order to complete existing information, adding new and broader contributions on these topics, a comparative analysis of the sporogenesis ultrastructure, with emphasis on cytological aspects of the sporocyte coat development, tapetum, monoplastidic and polyplastidic meiosis, sporoderm ontogeny and ornamentation of the mature spores, was carried out in 43 taxa of eight genera of the Lycopodiaceae: Austrolycopodium, Diphasium, Diphasiastrum, Huperzia (including Phlegmariurus), Lycopodium, Lycopodiella, Palhinhaea and Pseudolycopodiella growing in the Andes of Colombia and the Neotropics. Streptosporangium roseum Crauch 1955 is the type strain of the species which is the type species of the genus Streptosporangium. Here we describe the features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence and annotation. This is the first completed genome sequence of a member of the family Streptosporangiaceae, and the second largest microbial genome sequence ever deciphered. Permineralized sporangia from Late Permian sediments of the Amery Group in the Prince Charles Mountains, East Antarctica, are assigned to Arberiella sp. cf. A. africana Pant and Nautiyal. These sporangia contain between 2000 and 3000 taeniate, saccate pollen grains that are predominantly haploxylonoid bisaccate and referable to the palynotaxon Protohaploxypinus limpidus (Balme and Hennelly) Balme and Playford. However, the sporangia also contain greater than 4% of diploxylonoid bisaccate forms comparable to Striatopodocarpidites cancellatus (Balme and Hennelly) Hart 1963, together with sporadic monosaccate and trisaccate grains that, if found dispersed, would be assigned to several different pollen form genera. Morphometric analysis of in situ bisaccate pollen grains and taeniate bisaccate pollen in the dispersed palynoflora indicates that in situ grains occupy only the smaller end of the total size range. The tendency for in situ grains to cluster into two different size groups may reflect differential predispersal expansion of the corpus. The in situ pollen grains are variable in most qualitative and quantitative features used for taxonomic discrimination of dispersed taeniate bisaccate pollen, and this may lead to unreliable estimates of Late Permian floristic diversity if an overly restrictive species delimitation scheme is used.
